Dell Builds Supercomputers Using Cloud Tech For Mid-Market

The International Supercomputing Conference ( #ISC ) is underway this week in Frankfurt, Germany. ISC is one of two large annual conferences for the high performance computing ( #HPC ) industry, a.k.a. “supercomputing”. The list of server vendors sponsoring and exhibiting at ISC is a who’s who in advanced computing. Many top tier sponsors of ISC are also major suppliers to the web giants and global 100 enterprises – server manufacturers such as #Dell, #HPE, #Huawei, #IBM and #Lenovo, as well as processor and accelerator vendors like #Cavium, IBM, #Intel, #Mellanox and #NVIDIA.

The HPC community has historically designed, built and sold the biggest, fastest, most badass server clusters on this planet. My choice of words is not an accident. The semiannualTop500 list of supercomputers refreshed last night (June 2016). It identifies 51 HPC server clusters consuming over a megawatt (1 MW) of power each (plus four more in the high 900 kW range), with three monster clusters at the top weighing in at over 10 MW. A few web giants and governments have built systems at this scale that they don’t talk about, but they come to ISC to shop for technologies.
