EMC Aims To Accelerate Support For Containers With RackHD Machine Driver

Today at #DockerCon 2016, #EMC Corporation announced a hardware–agnostic solution for open deployment of Docker solutions directly on bare metal, #RackHD Machine Driver. This driver integrates with Docker Machine to manage the lifecycle of physical servers for the Docker Engine and future Docker solutions. With this new driver users can embrace Docker containers on bare-metal servers, which in turn can ease the deployment of software infrastructure through the combination of a turnkey-supported container platform with RackHD hardware management and orchestration.

As we previously stated, EMC’s RackHD software provides hardware management and orchestration (M&O) that automates discovery, description, provisioning and programming a wide array of servers today as well as a way to add upcoming networking devices. It can be leveraged as a component in a larger orchestration system or used to create a user interface for managing hardware services no matter what current hardware is in place. RackHD is also designed to aid organizations in accelerating the deployment of modern (Platform 3) applications that require an extensive number of commodity servers and heterogeneous infrastructure.

Instead of focusing on automating VMs, the new RackHD Machine Driver uses its M&O to drive automation for compatible hardware through the RackHD open APIs. The RackHD Machine Driver will allow operators and developers to take advantage of the efficiencies, along with the freedom and flexibility that containers provide for infrastructure and applications. EMC states that the integration of Docker with its RackHD Machine Driver will make container platforms a reality for physical data centers and help deliver the next iteration of the Software-Defined Data Center.
