Integrated communications services provider #Openserve and its technology supplier, #Huawei, say they are in the midst of deployment of a high-capacity packet-optical transport network in South Africa. The new optical transport capabilities will help Openserve keep up with growing data services demand in the country. The nationwide core network deployment began in Gauteng and is ongoing. The upgraded network will support 8 Tbps per fiber. It also enables Openserve to leverage software-defined networking ( #SDN ) concepts as well. Openserve is currently in what the partners described as “the process finalization phase regarding SDN use. "Openserve insisted on this architecture, when we began designing our packet and optical transport network in 2014," said Alphonzo Samuels, CEO of Openserve. "With the quick service provisioning and smart management that SDN brings, we can quickly develop more innovative services to meet various customer requirements, improving our competitive position in South Africa's telecom market. The successful deployment of the packet and optical transport network will be the first step in reconstructing our network architecture in the future. I am proud of my team and look forward to further successes in follow-up cooperation with Huawei." For related articles, visit the Network Design Topic Center.
