Veeam ponders hyperconverged data protection play

#Veeam is pondering a product to protect data stored inside hyperconverged systems, the company's new president and chief operating officer Peter McKay tells The Register. McKay is visiting Australia for #VMware 's “vForum” mini-gabfest and dropped in at Vulture South for a chat before the day. He said the company wants more integration between its products, is considering how it can improve availability of hyperconverged systems and is working on more cloudy collaborations to ensure it remains relevant. That's all in the future – McKay was cagey about just when we'll see such enhancements. For now his main job is to get Veeam ready to sell to enterprises. McKay once ran North America for VMware, which acquired him along with desktop-as-a-service outfit Desktone. He left the company seeking new horizons and says the Veeam opportunity came about because the company's founders felt the need for more experienced hands to grow it beyond its small-to-medium-business roots. To that end he's seeking links with with likes of Cap Gemini and Deloitte, as he feels they're the kind of partner that can get Veeam into – apologies for the next word - “solutions” rather than engagements based on product alone. McKay reckons those players will be a big help encouraging organisations to disentangle themselves from data protection and availability products from #EMC, #HP, #Tivoli and #Veritas. All have experienced recent troubles that McKay feels will make their customers receptive to chats about alternatives. The Register's conversation with McKay overlapped with the news that Donald Trump had been elected United States president, so we put him on the spot about what it might mean for Veeam and the technology industry. McKay's diplomatic response was that Trump's experience as an entrepreneur is encouraging, before expressing the hope that he surrounds himself with good people to develop and implement his agenda. ®
