Today’s compute needs are bigger than yesterday; tomorrow they will have grown to outpace today’s needs; and after tomorrow, today will be history. A big advocate of the software defined network ( #SDN ) data centre, Big Switch Networks is trying to rival industry players such as #Cisco, #VMware and #Huawei, with the launch of several components to automate, safeguard and scale data centre network architectures. “When you think about SDN or why would anyone bother, this comes down to the fact that is all about order of magnitude, improvements and efficiency,” said Holzrichter. “Today, if you go to a big data centre, there are literally hundreds of switches that need to be managed individually. “SDN is a concept where you have a small amount of software on each one of the switches, but it is all managed through a central pane of glass.” Growing at 54% CAGR The proposition to simplify data centre networking management and speed up the whole infrastructure is proving to be a success next to those operating centres across the world as the SDN market enjoys a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 53.9%, according to IDC. This is projected to last until 2020, when the market is expected to be worth nearly $12.5bn. The technology, which was initially looked at something only available to hyperscalers – very much like containers -, is indeed making its way into cloud-hungry data centres of all sizes. “The big difference in networking these days is that it is all about what software you put on the hardware. We call it hardware commoditisation and network disaggregation,” Holzrichter explained. “What we mean by disaggregation is the fact that you are separating the software from the commodity hardware. In the old days, switch vendors never used to do that. “Big players are embracing this concept of network disaggregation. From a data centre switching perspective, that will bring you next generation networking to your data centre.” Keep security tight Nevertheless, SDN work environments are no less immune to cyber threats than normal networks. A cyber incident could prove costly to an operator, and not just on the revenue front, but also on brand reputation. The industry is now faced with a growing dilemma around keeping the lights on in a safeguarded architecture against cyber criminals, while managing it through with stagnant or declining CAPEX and OPEX budgets. Crucial components of securing software-driven architecture are mitigation off-load, dynamic operation, intelligence, scalability and cost-optimisation. Holzrichter said: “It seems like every month there is a new attack. These criminal gangs are monetising it. One of the things that we announced is Big Secure Architecture designed to stop denial of service attacks. “In a data centre, you have specific racks where you have all of your different compute nodes and then you have a top of rack switch. We are able to put software on top of every single rack and collect all of that information.”
