Google and Fiat Chrysler Have Developed a Car With An Android Operating System

#Google tweaked #Android last year to make the open source operating system attractive to automakers that want a customized, turn-key infotainment system. An Android in-car infotainment system was viewed, at the time, as just a concept. Now it appears that at least one automaker is interested. Google (GOOG, -1.40%) and #Fiat #Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU, +0.66%) announced Tuesday they will show off a Chrysler 300 sedan that uses the Android open source platform at CES, the annual consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. Marchionne says Magneti Marelli parts unit has several suitors Marelli to be ‘signficant platform’ for technology, CEO says #FiatChrysler Automobiles NV Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne said he sees chipmaker #Samsung Electronics Co. as a possible strategic partner, amid interest from several potential buyers of the Italian-U.S. car producer’s Magneti Marelli components unit. “We have a very good relationship with Samsung, both as a supplier and as a potential strategic partner,” Marchionne said late Saturday in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Rome. “I happen to have a good relationship” with Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae Yong because both serve on the board of Exor SpA, the biggest shareholder in Fiat Chrysler. Samsung is in advanced talks to buy some or all of Marelli, people familiar with the matter said earlier this month. The South Korean manufacturer is particularly interested in Marelli’s lighting, in-car entertainment and telematics business, the people said, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private. Marchionne, who declined in the interview to comment on whether Samsung is a suitor, will have the chance to meet Lee on Monday, when the Exor board is scheduled to review the investment company’s second-quarter earnings.

Samsung is in advanced talks to buy assets of auto-parts maker Magneti Marelli from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, according to people familiar with the matter. It’s particularly interested in the lighting, in-car entertainment and telematics business and could consider an acquisition of the whole company, the people said, asking not to be identified as the discussions are private. Lee has pushed deeper into memory chips and displays to make Samsung less reliant on consumer electronics as he sold off assets and narrowed the scope of the conglomerate. A deal would position the 48-year-old, a director of Fiat Chrysler’s controlling shareholder Exor SpA since 2012, to further put his stamp on the South Korean giant and benefit from rising interest in cars from technology companies.
