Elephant in the room: Hortonworks CEO thinks Hadoop software will keep driving big data

Since its founding in 2011, Hortonworks Inc. has fought battles on two fronts: Persuade corporations to adopt an entirely new, open-source data platform called Hadoop for a novel type of analytic processing and build a business selling software that customers can get elsewhere for free. By most accounts, @Hortonworks is making good progress. The company recorded its first-ever positive cash flow in its most recent earnings report, with revenues up 44 percent from a year ago, to $75 million. Competitors @MapR Technologies Inc. and @Cloudera Inc. have been gradually edging away in recent years from their roots in #Hadoop, which was named after the beloved toy elephant of one of the creators’ children. But Hortonworks remains steadfastly committed to the big-data platform as the core of its business. Chief Executive @Rob Bearden (pictured) recently discussed that strategy in an interview with SiliconANGLE. Your early competitors in the Hadoop market have largely deemphasized Hadoop as a focus, while Hortonworks hasn’t. Why?   Customers spend more than $100 million a year with us, and the vast majority of that is Hadoop subscriptions. We’re managing the entire lifecycle of the data from the point of origination to data at rest, and we do the at-rest part with Apache Hadoop. We’re in the platform business with three principal platforms: Hortonworks DataFlow brings data off the edge and processes it at any point as an event, condition or action. You can to take a proscriptive and surgical approach to that data. When we bring data to rest, we manage and process it with Hadoop. Our third platform is DataPlane. It allows us to deploy those workloads wherever it’s best from an economics or physics standpoint. Many analysts are saying the future of big data is in the cloud. Do you agree? The math says they’re wrong. If you look at the revenue stream coming in to our company, two-thirds is on-prem. How have customer attitudes evolved since you started the company? It’s now assumed that they’re going to have Hadoop in an architecture for managing significant volumes of new-paradigm data. The math says data volumes are doubling every 14 to 16 months in the enterprise, and 80 percent of that is coming from new data sources. There’s nowhere else to go except Hadoop. [Enterprise resource planning] was intended to be a central hub for the entire order-to-cash lifecycle with one common view for the customer, but now that’s highly fractured with multiple ERPs and best-of-breed apps. Customers have gone further away from having a common central view. They can’t increase their velocity with having an aggregate view of the data. Hadoop is the most economical platform to do that. Looking back, which trends in big data took off faster than you expected and which didn’t? What surprised me is the acceleration of horizontal uses of Hadoop. Enterprise have learned the value of bringing all this data together on Hadoop for predictive insights that allowed them to engage earlier with customers and the supply chain. In the old world, everything was post-event. With Hadoop, they can bring all the data together about progress up to and through the event. What was surprising was how fast customers wanted to go all the way to the edge and grab that data from the point of origin. They want to engage with data as far upstream as they can. We bet on that when we bought Onyara’s data stream platform.

Hortonworks, Confluent and Waterline attempt to make Big Data easier

Three vendors, with announcements over the last two weeks, are providing evidence of some soul searching in the analytics industry around the complexity of its technologies. @Hortonworks, a spinoff of the original #Hadoop development team at Yahoo, is offering managed services for its own Hadoop distribution. @Confluent, the company behind the very popular @Apache Kafka streaming data platform, put its SQL query layer into general availability. And @Waterline Data, an important player in the data governance space, added new #GDPR and data optimization features to its core data catalog functionality. Horton hears a help cry Hortonworks' offering may be the most radical, in its own way. In addition to preexisting support subscriptions for its Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) and Hortonworks DataFlow (HDF) products, the company is now offering a new subscription level for both technologies called Hortonworks Operational Services. According to the company's press release, the subscription, announced today, offers "a fully managed environment for customers...and ongoing access to Hortonworks engineers and support teams." In that same release, Hortonworks CTO Scott Gnau says"At its heart, Hortonworks Operational Services is designed to reduce complexity when building, deploying and managing big data, whether it is on-prem or in the cloud..."

Cloudera founder Mike Olson: ‘We’re moving from automating processes to automating decisions’

The growing momentum of big data in the cloud has been described as a threat to @Cloudera Inc., which is ironic given that the company’s original business plan was to sell big data as a cloud service. The market wasn’t ready in 2008, so Cloudera shifted to selling an integrated platform that combines various open-source projects with proprietary extensions. Of the three prominent startups to emerge from the @Hadoop ecosystem, the other two being @MapR Technologies Inc. and @Hortonworks Inc., Cloudera was the most prominent, in no small part because of the $740 million investment it received from @Intel Corp. in 2014. Its stock-market performance since going public last April has been underwhelming, but few would deny that it’s a market leader. Chief Strategy Officer Mike Olson, one of Cloudera’s four founders, joined SiliconANGLE recently for a telephone interview on where big data’s going next. Gartner has estimated that 85 percent of enterprise big data projects failed. Does that surprise you? I don’t understand who they’re talking to. We’re a high-growth company in the $300 million-plus forecast range and most of our business is still on-prem. People aren’t shutting down large football fields of Teradata [Corp.], but the opportunity was never to displace data warehouses. It was to capture more data than we could before and see what we could do if we had better tools to derive value. I think Gartner is comparing the wrong things. The growth rate of machine learning is zero if you compare it against traditional markets because there is no traditional market. But it has created value in huge new ways. It’s true that the biggest growth area has been in cloud databases like Cloudera Altus and Redshift on Amazon Web Services. We’ve believed since the early days that much of the action would be in cloud services, and that’s why we named the company Cloudera. We still believe that, but I think there’s enormous potential and success in on-prem deployments. Three years ago, Cloudera defined its mission around a unified platform built on Hadoop, the pioneering framework for managing big data. Today, you don’t even mention Hadoop in your description. What changed? We talked about Hadoop in the early days because people needed to know what the platform was and what we had. Today it’s a much richer environment. We’re seeing native machine learning using Spark integrated with AWS storage buckets. There’s no Hadoop in there. This platform is doing more than just what Hadoop did. Our original platform was Hadoop and MapReduce. Today, we ship 26 different open-source projects, 18 of which were created by Clouderans. Hadoop is always going to be part of the foundation of the company — and we’re proud that we spotted it so early — but it’s only a small part of what we do today.

3 Takeaways From Cloudera's Strong Earnings Report

@Cloudera (NYSE:CLDR), the #Hadoop software distributor, recently reported third-quarter earnings, sending shares up about 7%. Cloudera went public back in April at $15 but has traded as high as $23 earlier this year. #Bigdata #analytics and #opensource Hadoop is becoming a key tool for large enterprises over the world, and the recent quarter's results showed this in spades. However, as is the case with many high-growth, young tech companies, Cloudera also continues to rack up losses with $24.4 million in non-GAAP operating losses. Including stock-based compensation, operating losses were $56.6 million. Here's what management wants us to know about the company's key achievements last quarter. IMAGES SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES. Going into the cloud Cloudera's biggest announcement last quarter was a product called the Shared Data Experience, or SDX. Basically, Cloudera has made a product that allows large enterprises to work across Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Azure, or a private data center running the Hadoop Distributed File System. Traditionally, Hadoop deployments occurred with a company's data center, but as more and more large enterprises are increasingly turning to the cloud, they run into a problem -- how to govern the company's data moving around all over the place, and how do you cleanse and analyze all the data across environments? Said Chief Strategy Officer Mike Olsen: If you're an enterprise CIO or CBO, you're required by law to protect sensitive user data. You're generally under the gaze of regulators, making sure you comply with rules, governing how data is used and by whom... But that data is essential for high value business applications. You need to be able to process new data as it arrives, to clean it and enhance it. Then, you need to be able to query it or to do statistical analyses or to train machine learning models... At every step, there are new security and identity systems. The result is that operations staff are forced to create multiple copies of data. This data replication and movement increases risk, management complexity and cost. There's no way to look at data lineage, or to set policies for end-to-end data governance. There's no support for answering the questions that regulators ask. And that's precisely the problem that SDX solves... This is good news, given that Hadoop has traditionally run in a data center. Last quarter, for instance, only 20% of Cloudera's revenue came from cloud deployments. Since large enterprises -- which make up most of Clouder's revenue -- are increasingly accelerating cloud and hybrid cloud environments, it is essential that Cloudera's software works seamlessly across the major clouds. The SDX product not only does that but aids companies in assuring security, too. Torrid growth These enterprise-oriented initiatives may help explain the growing confidence corporations are putting in Cloudera. Here are some eye-popping growth figures from the past quarter: Subscription growth of 48%, accelerating from 46% in the second quarter. Net expansion rate (which is same-customer sales versus one year ago) of 135%, which is still strong, compared to 140% in the second quarter. The difference was that the company landed a higher proportion of Global 8000 customers, which have a higher initial spend rate. This increased the initial customer spend from $65,000 to $75,000. 50 customers had annual run rates of $1 million or greater, up from 40 just last quarter. Subscription non-GAAP gross margin expanded 250 basis points to 86%. Clearly, the company is seeing positive momentum, increasing usage, and bigger wins, which helped drive the optimism following the earnings announcement. But can it be profitable? Despite this rapid pace of revenue growth, the company is still unprofitable. Cloudera doesn't believe it will be operating cash flow break-even for another four to six quarters. Investors should remember that stock-based compensation, a real expense, isn't counted in operating cash flow, so real profitability lies even beyond that horizon. SBC was a whopping $31 million in this past quarter alone, so keep an eye out for that number going forward. Before you discount Cloudera on that basis, however, keep in mind these Hadoop companies operate a "land and expand" strategy, which means existing customers pay Cloudera according to how much data they use. Since data projects should continue to grow (as evidenced by the expansion rate), the company should become more profitable over time just based on increasing usage from current customers. Clearly, the company is aggressively investing ahead of that. The big picture Cloudera, like its rival Hortonworks (NASDAQ:HDP) reported a strong third quarter, showing that Hadoop and big data science tools are being used more and more across enterprises of all types. Just keep in mind that profitability is still a ways off.

Why Cloudera, Inc. Stock Fell 14.3% in September

Cloudera (NYSE: CLDR) dipped 14.3% in September, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, following a post-earnings sell-off and the announcement of a secondary stock offering. So what @Cloudera, which specializes in big data and @Hadoop distribution, released its second-quarter earnings results on Sept. 7, delivering revenue and earnings that topped the average analyst estimates. Despite a strong performance that saw subscription revenues climb 46% year over year, overall sales climb 39%, and new guidance for a smaller loss on the fiscal year, the company's shares dipped following the earnings release. Shares continued to fall after the company announced on Sept. 15 that it had filed for a new stock offering. Details on the follow-up offering are still somewhat scarce, but the company has confirmed that it will involve selling existing shares and issuing new stock. The company's post-IPO lockup period is set to expire on Oct. 25, and the potential for large insider sell-offs could be another source of anxiety for shareholders. Image source: Getty Images. Now what Along with chief competitor Hortonworks, Cloudera is a first mover in enterprise Hadoop platforms, and stands to benefit from rapidly expanding addressable markets for categories like data analytics and machine learning. As a young company operating in the fast-growing cloud-services space, Cloudera has a lot of room to run if its business manages to remain competitive. On the other hand, it will likely have to fend off resource-rich competitors like Oracle, SAP, and IBM, and come up with new ways to differentiate its product offerings. With a roughly $2.2 billion market cap, there's lots of potential for volatility with Cloudera stock, and, as shown in September, even solid earnings performance might not be met with a favorable market reaction. Investors in the company should closely track the company's progress -- while not reading too much into big short-term swings in valuation.

The system, which comes with a variety of data science tools built-in, allows data scientists to get up and running quickly to develop and deploy their advanced analytics models in-place, directly where the data resides for greater performance. And because it is based on the IBM common SQL engine, clients can use the system to easily move workloads to the public cloud to begin automating their businesses with machine learning. In fact, because the popular database engine is used across both hosted and cloud-based databases, users can move and query data across multiple data stores, such as the Db2 Warehouse on Cloud, or #Hortonworks Data Platform. At the heart of the Integrated Analytics System are the #IBM Data Science Experience, #Apache #Spark and the #Db2 Warehouse, all of which have been optimized to work together with straight forward management. The Data Science Experience provides a set of critical data science tools and a collaborative work space through which data scientists can create new analytic models that developers can use to build intelligent applications quickly and easily. The inclusion of Apache Spark, the popular open source framework, enables in-memory data processing, which speeds analytic applications by allowing analytics to be processed directly where the data resides. New to this class of offering are the machine learning capabilities that come with both the Data Science Experience and Spark embedded on the system. Having machine learning processing embedded means that data does not need to be moved to the analytics processing, reducing the associated processes and wait times for analytics to run and respond. This simplifies the process of training and evaluating predictive models, as well as the testing, deployment and training as it is all done in-place. "The combination of high performance and advanced analytics – from the Data Science Experience to the open Spark platform – gives our business analysts the ability to conduct intense data investigations with ease and speed," said Vitaly Tsivin, Executive Vice President, at AMC Networks, who has been testing the system for several months. "The Integrated Analytics System is positioned as an integral component of an enterprise data architecture solution, connecting IBM Netezza Data Warehouse and IBM PureData System for Analytics, cloud-based Db2 Warehouse on Cloud clusters, and other data sources." "Today's announcement is a continuation of our aggressive strategy to make data science and machine learning more accessible than ever before and to help organizations like AMC, begin harvesting their massive data volumes – across infrastructures – for insight and intelligence," said Rob Thomas, General Manager, IBM Analytics. Seamless Expansion to the Cloud The integrated architecture of the new system combines software enhancements such as asymmetric massively parallel processing (AMPP) with IBM Power® technology and flash memory storage hardware and builds on the IBM PureData System for Analytics, and the previous IBM Netezza data warehouse offerings. It also supports a wide range of data types and data services, including everything from the Watson Data Platform and IBM Db2 Warehouse On Cloud, to Hadoop and IBM BigSQL. Like these solutions, the Integrated Analytics System is built with the IBM common SQL engine, enabling users to seamlessly integrate the unit with cloud-based warehouse solutions. In addition, industry standard tools and the common SQL engine provide users with an option to also move these workloads seamlessly to public or private cloud environments with Spark clusters, based on the user's requirements. Like IBM's existing data warehouse products, the Integrated Analytics System is designed to provide built-in data virtualization and compatibility with Netezza®, Db2®, and IBM PureData System for Analytics. Among these capabilities, the new system also incorporates hybrid transactional analytical processing (HTAP). In contrast to typical business environments where transaction processing and analytics are run on distinct architectures, HTAP runs predictive analytics, transactional and historical data on the same database at accelerated response times. Later this year, the company plans to add support for HTAP with IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS, which will enable the system to transparently integrate with IBM z Systems infrastructures.

Yahoo is giving a critical piece of internal technology to the world -- just like it did with Hadoop

Yahoo is open-sourcing an internal tool called #Vespa, which it uses for content recommendations, ad serving, and executing certain searches. Vespa is arguably #Yahoo 's biggest open-source software release since #Hadoop in 2009, which formed the basis for two now-public companies, #Hortonworks and #Cloudera. Companies like #Amazon, #Facebook, and #Google could find it useful.

Oath, the #Verizon-owned parent company of Yahoo, is releasing for free some of its most important internal software, which the company has long used to make recommendations, target ads and execute searches.

The Vespa software solves a common but surprisingly difficult problem: quickly figuring out what to show a user in response to input, like when they type text into a box. Oath uses it in around 150 applications, including Flickr, Yahoo Mail and the main Yahoo search engine (specifically for components like entities, local results, images and answers to questions). It handles 3 billion native ad requests every day.

"The typical case is you don't know what you want to serve, but you have 20 billion pictures and you want to find the right ones," Jon Bratseth, a distinguished architect at Yahoo who led Vespa's development, told CNBC in an interview.

Vespa, which is now live on GitHub with an Apache 2.0 open-source license, can easily be added to different applications, making it suitable for use at big companies like Amazon, Facebook and Google that need to do different kinds of processing on different sets of data.

The release is the most important for Yahoo since it open-sourced the code for the Hadoop big data software in 2006. Hadoop has since come to be at the center of two public companies, Cloudera and Yahoo spin-off Hortonworks. Today people at lots of companies can contribute to technology that's still widely used at Yahoo, and build their own systems using Hadoop.

How Yahoo built it

Big tech companies regularly open-source their software. But if there's powerful software at the heart of a company's biggest revenue centers, it can take a while to come out into the open, and Vespa is no different.

Vespa dates back to the early 2000s. Yahoo already had web search technology, first through a partnership with Google and later through its 2002 Inktomi acquisition. What Yahoo didn't have was technology for delivering search results and recommendations on content that falls outside traditional web search results.

In 2003 Yahoo acquired Overture, which included its partner AltaVista as well as a lesser known search engine called AllTheWeb.com. After the deal, the roughly 30 AllTheWeb people were given a year to build software that could perform certain functions quickly before web pages were shown to end users. The system also needed to be easy to set up, run and tweak, so that it could be applied to a variety of applications without much trouble.

In around 2005, the AllTheWeb team worked with Yahoo's shopping team to adopt the new system. It required less management time, freeing up staffers to build new features.

"After that, we had a proven use case -- and that was a complicated one," Bratseth said. "More and more teams in Yahoo started using our system by themselves, because it made business sense. They would offload a lot of the problems they had to take care of themselves."

So Bratseth's team started expanding the powers of Vespa. They made it capable of handling input other than users' strings of text; over time it could also personalize content based on what users had clicked on in the past, which is valuable in cases when users haven't typed in anything. They also changed Vespa so that it could take direction from machine-learning algorithms.

Hadoop Haters Gonna Hate

The #BigData space has been confusing.  Investors looking to ride the ups and downs of this market need to develop high tolerance for contradictory messages.

Take Hadoop for example.  A few years ago, the technology was hailed as THE solution for all Big Data problems.  Then, came the “IT research firm prediction wars”: Gartner claimed that only few companies had deployed it while Forrester forecasted that 100% of enterprises would have it by the end of next year.

Since then, two large companies servicing the #Hadoop market have gone public with much financial appeal.  #Cloudera (NYSE: #CLDR) went IPO in April and its valuation now nears $2.3B (the company is set to report earnings on September 9).  #Hortonworks (NASDAQ: #HDP) reported last week that its stock has gone up by over 74% since January 1st.  For reference, that’s more than #Tesla (NASDAQ: #TSLA ) did in the same period!

So, what’s really happening here?

Hadoop expectations: the elephant in the room...

Hadoop has been around for about 10 years. And over the last 10 years, many innovations have been delivered, with technology breakthroughs that span a large space, from Apache Spark to Presto to Zeppelin. Social ImpactVoiceHow One Executive Woman Broke Barriers - And Helped 10,000 Women Do The Same Hadoop got it start as a batch system, primarily used to store large volumes of data at a low cost. Now, thousands of enterprises have delivered Hadoop-powered applications for financial fraud detection, cybersecurity, inventory management, network troubleshooting, risk analysis, IoT… etc. Some even claim to use Hadoop to save lives: Cerner, a Cloudera customer, says it has developed an infection detection system that has saved more than 3,000 lives to date!
