Networking technology company Juniper Networks (JNPR) has announced its intent to acquire Cyphort

Cyphort has developed software that is complementary to #SIEM systems to enhance enterprise defenses against cyber security threats. The deal builds on Juniper's initiatives to transition its business model to a more balanced hardware and software approach to providing networking capabilities.  Quick Take Networking technology company Juniper Networks (JNPR) has announced its intent to acquire Cyphort for an undisclosed amount. Cyphort provides real-time security analytics to mid- and large-sized enterprises for advanced threat defense. With the acquisition, Juniper wants to continue building on its software-defined network security offerings as it makes the transition from a primarily hardware-driven supplier to a more balanced hardware/software solutions provider. Target Company Santa Clara, California-based Cyphort was founded in 2011 to create an open architecture system that integrates with existing SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) tools to enhance threat visibility by using machine learning and behavioral analytics. Management is headed by President and CEO Manoj Leelanivas, who joined the firm in 2013 and was previously EVP Sales at Juniper Networks.

OpenStack Vendor Mirantis Offers Managed OpenContrail SDN Services

Open-source #SDN originally started by #JuniperNetworks, now has a new support. The open-source #OpenContrail Software Defined Networking ( #SDN ) technology is one of the most widely used and deployed networking approaches in the #OpenStack cloud market. That's a fact that is not lost on OpenStack vendor Mirantis, which is why today Mirantis is announcing commercial support for OpenContrail. The OpenContrail SDN project got started in September 2013, when Juniper created the project from its Contrail code base. Juniper acquired Contrail in December 2012 for $176 million. According to Boris Renski, co-founder and CMO of Mirantis, Juniper provides commercial Contrail (not OpenContrail) to its customers that is packaged differently. Renski said that Mirantis will be shipping the SDN control plane as a container. Additionally, he noted that the release and support lifecycle cadence of contrail is not always perfectly aligned with other components that Mirantis ships, like OpenStack and Kubernetes. Advertisement "Commercial contrail also implies a particular deployment reference architecture, which, in our evaluation, is great for many use cases but not ideal for some others," Renski told EnterpriseNetworkingPlanet. "Most importantly, we'll be delivering OpenContrail to managed service customers, which implies managed OpenContrail." "It's a different delivery model from what Juniper typically offers," Renski added. The Mirantis Fuel OpenStack management software tool already supports and enables organization to easily deploy OpenContrail. Juniper and Mirantis are hardly strangers. In March 2015, Juniper announced that Mirantis' OpenStack distribution was a supported distribution for Contrail. Mirantis was actually the second OpenStack distribution vendor to gain Contrail support, following Canonical's Ubuntu which announced a partnership with Juniper in February 2015. When it comes to SDN technologies deployed by Mirantis customers today, OpenContrail is not currently the top choice. Renski said that the more common SDN choice is for organizations is use OpenStack's native SDN capabilities, which is the combination of Neutron, OVS (Open Virtual Switch) and VXLAN.

White House pledges $400 million to research 5G wireless technology

The Obama Administration on Friday announced a $400 million initiative led by the National Science Foundation that will conduct research in the area of 5G wireless technology which promises to be up to 100 times faster than today’s 4G LTE. The Advanced Wireless Research Initiative (AWRI), which builds on the Federal Communications Commission’s recent Spectrum Frontiers vote, will deploy four city-scale testing platforms over the next decade that will be used for advanced wireless research. Each platform will be comprised of a network of software-defined radio antennas blanketing their respective cities, essentially mimicking existing cellular networks. The White House says this will allow academic researchers, entrepreneurs and wireless companies to test, prove and refine their technologies and software algorithms in a real-world setting.
