KKR teams up with Michael Dell in offer for Germany's GfK

FRANKFURT, March 4 (Reuters) - American IT entrepreneur #MichaelDell has agreed a deal to take a stake in the investment vehicle that private equity firm #KKR is using to invest in German research firm #GfKSE. #Dell built up a stake of just over 10 percent in GfK via his #MSDCapital fund, potentially throwing into doubt KKR's plans to take over the German company together with GfK Verein. KKR said in a statement late on Friday it has agreed to acquire around 3.7 million shares, equivalent to a 10.07 percent stake in GfK from three shareholders. The three shareholders are funds managed by Michael Dell. KKR will pay around 50 million euros ($53.1 million) for a portion of the shares, while around 6.89 percent of the shares will be exchanged for a stake in the investment vehicle through which KKR is investing in GFK, according to the statement. The deal means KKR and GfK Verein have together passed the 75 percent threshold they needed for the 43.50 euro per share offer for GfK to succeed. The takeover values the German company at about 1.69 billion euros. ($1 = 0.9416 euros) (Reporting by Alexander Huebner; Writing by Victoria Bryan; Editing by Alexander Smith)

Michael Dell's $80 million investment no one knew about could be worth as much as $4 billion

#Dell founder Michael Dell has quietly invested over $80 million in various local TV stations since 2011 — and it could soon end up returning as much as $4 billion to the PC mogul.

According to a Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday, Dell currently controls a group of broadcasters that collectively own spectrum licenses that are worth $4.2 billion, based on prices set by the FCC.

Dell's investments were made through his investment arm, #MSDCapital, which created a company called OTA Broadcasting to control all the TV stations.

Some of the stations under Dell's control include the Spanish-language channel Azteca America and a New York-based Korean TV channel. He also owns 11 local stations in the Pittsburgh area, which collectively cost him roughly $7.3 million to invest in, but is now estimated to be worth $1.47 billion.

Dell's investment in TV stations is part of a broader activity called spectrum speculation. The investments were likely made in anticipation of the upcoming FCC auction, in which spectrum licenses will be sold to wireless-broadband carriers like AT&T and Verizon, who need additional airwave frequencies to meet the soaring demand for its services.
