The SimpliVity OmniCube hyper-converged infrastructure appliance product set brings together core data center functions such as hypervisor, compute, storage, backup, replication, deduplication, WAN optimization, cloud gateway and more.

OmniCube combines compute, storage and networking resources to consolidate IT infrastructure and services below the hypervisor level. It runs the OmniStack Data Virtualization Platform, which provides efficient data access, native data protection and unified management. OmniStack offers a software-only version of what runs on the SimpliVity OmniCube appliances; customers must supply their own hardware. Policy-based, virtual machine (VM)-centric backup and WAN-optimized replication for disaster recovery is also included with OmniStack. Management occurs at the VM level using tools such as VMware vCenter and vRealize Automation.

The OmniCube hyper-converged infrastructure appliance family also includes a PCIe accelerator card that handles data deduplication, compression and inline optimization. This allows customers to achieve 40:1 data efficiency while increasing application performance; according to SimpliVity, half of them see performance improvements of greater than 50%.

SimpliVity launches all-flash appliance models for hyper-convergence

#SimpliVity is supporting all-flash appliance products for the first time, and the hyper-converged pioneer also added disaster recovery and backup capabilities to its #OmniStack software. SimpliVity sells its own branded OmniCube appliances built on #Dell servers. It also makes its OmniStack software available for #Cisco Unified Computing System ( #UCS ) and #Lenovo servers to turn them into hyper-converged systems that combine compute, storage and virtualization in one box.

The SimpliVity OmniCube CN-5400-F, Cisco UCS C240 M4 and Lenovo System x3650 M5 will be available with 14 1.6 TB solid-state drives for 18.4 TB of raw flash capacity. Until now, SimpliVity supported two or four 400 GB SSDs, along with four, eight or 20 hard disk drives on its branded and partner configurations.

All SimpliVity nodes are 2U appliances, with a minimum of three nodes per cluster. Adam Sekora, director of the office of the CTO at SimpliVity, said the vendor will expand the number of available all-flash models.

SimpliVity Seeks More Vendor Partners, Eyes 2016 For Server Expansion

#SimpliVity CEO Doron Kempel is eager to offer the company's software on servers from an expanded roster of vendors and says that business will make up about half of the company's sales in the coming year.

SimpliVity's #hyper-converged infrastructure is now offered in three ways: in its #OmniCube appliance, which runs on #Dell server technology; and in its OmniStack system, which is SimpliVity software on servers either from its main vendor partner #Cisco Systems, or from #Lenovo, which teamed up with SimpliVity earlier this year.

SimpliVity cozies up to Microsoft, Hyper-V

Hyper-converged pioneer #SimpliVity has opened a research and development office in Seattle near to #Microsoft, a sign that it is close to adding #Hyper-V support.

SimpliVity’s OmniCube appliances combine storage, compute and virtualization. SimpliVity has supported VMware hypervisors since its start in 2013 and added KVM support in 2015 but still lacks support for Hyper-V.

SimpliVity chief marketing officer Marianne Budnik said #OmniCubes will support Hyper-V in early 2016. She said the vendor will have around 30 developers in Seattle “working day in and day out to advance all things #Microsoft.”

SimpliVity’s goal is for its OmniStack data virtualization platform to support any hypervisor, x86 server, cloud provider and management tool.

Budnick said SimpliVity would not follow rival #Nutanix in developing its own native hypervisor, though. Nutanix last June launched its #Acropolis hypervisor. That alleviates the need for an outside hypervisor, and also can help Nutanix customers move workloads across different vendors’ hypervisors. Nutanix also supports #VMware, Hyper-V and KVM hypervisors.
