Sequoia Capital backs Q-Ctrl, the Australian quantum computing start-up

The investors behind a who's who of tech giants ranging from @Apple and @Airbnb to @Yahoo and @YouTube are pouring money into a small Australian #quantumcomputing company, cementing Australia's position as a leader in the technology that is expected to revolutionise the 21st century. Sequoia Capital, the Silicon Valley venture capitalists that also backed @Google, Instagram and @PayPal, are now backing @Q-Ctrl, a quantum computing software company based at the @University of Sydney. Q-Ctrl's software, developed by Professor Michael Biercuk at the University of Sydney Quantum Control Laboratory, is designed to help solve what has emerged as one of the biggest problems slowing down the development of a useful quantum computer: how to keep the delicate, atom-scale data bits, known as quantum bits or "qubits", stable long enough for them to be used for computations. To give quantum computers an advantage over classical computers, qubits have to exist in a state known as "superposition", where they represent 0 and 1 at the same time, and where they can be used to quickly make calculations that are either unfeasibly slow, or completely impossible, with the classical data bits now used the world over, which can represent either 1 or 0 but cannot be both at once.

Lenovo, Intel, Synaptics, and PayPal are working to kill passwords on your next laptop

The newly announced #Lenovo / #Intel / #Synaptics / #PayPal partnership will combine Lenovo’s laptops with Intel’s on-chip hardware security, allowing you to use Synaptic's biometric fingerprint sensors to replace passwords for logging into FIDO-compliant services (like PayPal). All of this is secured by FIDO's security spec, which already has widespread support across the industry. The FIDO Alliance is a consortium founded several years ago in part by Lenovo and PayPal — backed by tons of major companies like, #Google, #BankofAmerica, and #Microsoft — with a goal to develop new methods of authentication that are simpler and more secure than passwords. The group has considered multiple approaches to replacing the password, with biometrics, USB keys, and voice and face recognition all being considered as new security standards.

Google Is Winning the Fight for PayPal's Business

TECH #PAYPAL #Google Is Winning the Fight for PayPal's Business and It could potentially beat out #Amazon and #Microsoft. #Alphabet ’s Google GOOGL -0.26% is close to winning PayPal as a client for its cloud business, potentially beating out Amazon and Microsoft, CNBC reported on Tuesday. While Google is the front-runner, the online payments processor is evaluating the other providers and hasn’t made any decision yet, CNBC reported, citing people familiar with the matter. However, PayPal PYPL 0.41% may not move its technology infrastructure in the fourth quarter, the peak period for online commerce, CNBC said. PayPal has some existing business with Amazon Web Services, according to the CNBC report.

HP Enterprise’s Restructuring Shows Management Has Its Eye On The Ball

Though they can be messy at first, tech spinoffs and breakups often end up serving investors well, as the post-breakup companies prove more nimble, agile and focused than the parent companies that preceded them.

Motorola Solutions'  ( #MSI ) performance since Motorola's early-2011 breakup is one good example. And there are signs @PayPal (PYPL) is better positioning itself to go after the digital payments opportunities in front of it after splitting from @eBay last year.

#PayPal is a holding in Jim Cramer's Action Alerts PLUS Charitable Trust Portfolio. Want to be alerted before Cramer buys or sells PYPL? Learn more now.

Though it's too early to call #HP Enterprise  ( @HPE ) a big post-breakup success story, the company does look like it's in better shape than it was when the old HP split last fall. #HPE delivered positive annual sales growth for the first time in five years during its April quarter -- last year's $3 billion purchase of Wi-Fi equipment vendor @ArubaNetworks helped, but so did stronger-than-expected server, storage and organic networking growth.
