Overcoming Space and Power Limitations in HPC Data Centers

In companies of all sizes, critical applications are being adopted to accelerate product development, make forecasts based on predictive models, enhance business operations, and improve customer engagements. As a result, there is a growing need for Big Data analytics in many businesses, more sophisticated and more granular modeling and simulation, wide-spread adoption of AI (and the need to train neural nets), and new applications such as the use of genomic analysis in clinical settings and personalized medicine. These applications generate workloads that overwhelm the capacity of most installed data center server systems. Simply put, today’s compute-intensive workloads require access to significant HPC resources. Challenges bring HPC to the Mainstream Many of today’s new and critical business applications are pushing the limits of traditional data centers. As a result, most companies that previously did not need HPC capabilities, now find such processing power is required to stay competitive. Unfortunately, several problems prevent this from happening. When attempting to upgrade infrastructure, most organizations face inherent data center limitations with space and power. Specifically, many data centers lack the physical space to increase compute capacity significantly. And all organizations incur high electricity costs to run and cool servers, while some data centers have power constraints that cannot be exceeded. Additionally, there is lack of internal HPC expertise. Big Mike is going to make HPE's life a living Dell: Server sales surge

@Dell is set to overtake @HPE and become the number-one server vendor in terms of revenue and unit shipment numbers, according to IDC. Meanwhile, @Lenovo's server shipments are under severe pressure. IDC's third-quarter Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker has two tables and a chart showing what's going on. Here's the server vendor revenues table: Advertisement HPE is the leading named vendor by revenue share. But look at the right-hand column showing the year-on-year growth, with HPE's sales slipping back 1.1 per cent on the third quarter of 2016, and Dell's rising 37.9 per cent. If this keeps up, @MichaelDell 's tech titan could overtake HPE in revenue next quarter. The server market as a whole grew 19.9 per cent in terms of dollars pocketed. @IBM outgrew it with a 26.5 percent surge in revenue, attributable to its z mainframe refresh. Cisco booked a 6.9 per cent growth, while Lenovo slumped 12.6 per cent, again all according to the beancounters at IDC. The ODMs – original design manufacturers aka generic white-box shifters selling to the cloud hyperscalers – outgrew everybody with a 45.3 per cent rise in revenues. ODMs and the "others" accounted for the top two revenue gulpers, with HPE next and then Dell. IDC has charted the revenue market share changes over the past few quarters: What can we glean from this? ODMs and "others" have overtaken HPE and, now, Dell is set to do the same. It is not growing as strongly as the ODM group, and looks to be edging closer to the "others" category. HPE is taking a beating. Cisco, Lenovo and IBM are far behind the leaders, and have no realistic hope if catching up. Indeed, IBM may fall back as its mainframe refresh cycle completes. Next up is the unit ship table for the same period: Although it has labeled the top five vendors, IDC has kindly included six of them. The market grew at 11.1 per cent, in terms of units shipped, and Dell grew at 11.2 per cent to 503,000 servers, we're told. HPE's total was close at 501,400 but it fell back 1.7 per cent, reflecting its withdrawal from the hyperscale mass market. Lenovo, Inspur, Supermicro and Huawei are all in the five to six per cent area, with ODM at 25 per cent and 668,000 units, growing at an astonishing 44.7 per cent, and "others" at 16 per cent with 428,000. Lenovo fell back 33.1 per cent, and is another supplier taking a beating. Inspur grew 37.9 per cent, Supermicro 24.8 per cent, and Huawei just 4.2 per cent. Dell, Inspur and Supermicro have growing server businesses; none of the other server vendors in this chart do in any meaningful way. It is only one quarter, and hyperscalers buy large numbers of servers in an irregular fashion so the ODMs may not fare so well next quarter. HPE is still a large volume shipper. Lenovo's foray into x86 servers via buying IBM's x86 business is looking like it might have been a mistake. ®

Supermicro Unveils New HPC Solutions at SC17

Worldwide Server Market Revenue Jumps 6.3% in the Second Quarter Driven by Strong Hyperscale Shipments, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, vendor revenue in the worldwide server market increased 6.3% year over year to $15.7 billion in the second quarter of 2017 (2Q17). Overall server market growth rebounded after several slow quarters as much of the market had been waiting for availability of Intel's new Skylake processors. While demand from cloud service providers propped up overall market performance, many other areas of the server market are still stagnant. Worldwide server shipments increased 1.9% year over year to 2.45 million units in 2Q17. According to IDC, worldwide server market revenue increased 6.3% year over year to $15.7 billion in Q2 2017. Demand for high-end systems experienced a year-over-year revenue decline of 18.9% to $1.3 billion. IDC expects continued long-term secular declines in high-end system revenue. "Hyperscalers as a group made a large deployment push in the second quarter led by Amazon, which alone accounted for more than 10% of server units shipped in the quarter," said Kuba Stolarski, research director, Computing Platforms at IDC. "As hyperscalers tend to lead the market on most architectural updates, we expect the rest of the market to catch up over the next several quarters. Super Micro Computer's (SMCI) CEO Charles Liang on Q4 2017 Results - Earnings Call Transcript

@CharlesLiang Thank you, Perry and good afternoon everyone. Let me summarize our fourth quarter. Revenue was $717.9 million. It’s 36.9% higher year-over-year and 13.7% higher than the previous quarter. Non-GAAP net income was $20.7 million. Non-GAAP earnings per share was $0.39 per diluted share compared to $0.38 last quarter and $0.20 last year. Non-GAAP EPS was 95.8% higher year-over-year and 20% higher than last quarter. #SuperMicro achieved new record high in revenue in the first quarter which exceeded our expectations. Throughout fiscal 2017 our revenue was over $2.5 billion or 14% better than last year. We’ve been remarkable is that our fiscal 2017 second half achieved 37.6% growth over last year, which is many multiples higher than the overall industry and any other Tier 1 vendors, which owes our payments rates and some momentum as we finish the fiscal year and coming to a major technology refresh cycle [indiscernible] Super Micro had built a strong foundation, for sustaining high gross, while maintaining profitability every quarter for 24 years. They create a stronger and deeper relationship with our customers. Our software tools are tightly integrate into our customer environment [indiscernible] We achieved $50 million of [indiscernible] from global service and management software in 2017, that is nearly doubled from the last year. And we will continue to double yearly moving forward. With higher margin and amortize the new model to increase profitability overtime. Building servers, switches and storage are a good racket for ODM #Supermicro but building #Vblock-like rack scale systems is an even better one. It has launched a complete #RackScale Design system using its server and storage building blocks in standard racks, with multiple rack PODs. Supermicro first talked about its RSD ideas in March. Rack Scale Design (RSD) supports #Intel Xeon SP-based X11 generation and all existing X10 generation server and storage systems, as well as Supermicro networking products. It introduces pooled NVMe storage shared by multiple application hosts over PCI-E interconnects. RSD building blocks share power and cooling resources to provide the claimed best PUE metrics in large scale data centre deployments. Supermicro says customers need to able to put together racks of gear - servers, storage and networking, more easily. Its RSD is pre-packaged, pre-validated, and built on an open standards-based architecture with API-driven Redfish management. It's integrated with data centre management software layers such as #OpenStack

The Supermicro Rack Management Module (SRMM) is based on Redfish APIs (and Intel's RSD) and works with Supermicro's POD Manager to speed deployment and make data centre management easier, according to Supermicro. We're told pools of compute, storage and networking across racks can be managed as physical servers, storage arrays and switches are managed now.

Supermicro says that, with RSD, many application hosts can share and dynamically compose systems to support wide range of workloads with a balanced computing, networking and storage ratio.

The company thinks data centres are having to change to cope with application sets needing more data storage and better access to the data, meaning more drives in less physical space, faster drives and faster access to them; shared NVMe drives and PCIe connections to the host servers.

Charles Liang, Supermicro’s President and CEO, said that RSD includes a 1U enclosure with 32 hot-swap NVMe SSDs inside it, claiming this is “unrivalled density

The customer types in mind are cloud service providers, telecoms and Fortune 500 companies. We should understand, Supermicro says, that RSD technology provides a foundation to build future infrastructure for both data centre and cloud environments.

Future RSD releases are planned to support other PCIe end point devices, such as FPGAs, and help data centre operators to programmatically control software-defined data centres from bare metal to cloud-native applications
