In this digital day and age, everything and anything is stored in the small memory chip of a given electronic device. From handheld devices to #supercomputers , all common computing platforms use storage systems to store data temporarily or permanently. However, if the primary storage crashes or goes through a temporary breakdown, it is next to impossible to retrieve data. Here, #nonvolatilememory comes into play. Non-volatile memory is generally used for long-term persistent storage. Increased usage of smart devices including smartphones and tablets is fuelling the demand for next generation non-volatile memory. Hard disk, flash memory, and magnetic tape are the most common examples of non-volatile memory.

Lenovo Unveils Low Temperature Solder Process, a 'Breakthrough' in PC Manufacturing
PC and mobile giant Lenovo on Thursday announced it has developed a new PC manufacturing process making printed circuit boards (PCBs) that conserves energy and increases reliability, apart from reducing carbon emissions. Lenovo says the patent-pending #LowTemperatureSolder (LTS) process will effectively replace the current tin-based process that requires high temperatures, causing component stress. Lenovo says the LTS process is planned to be rolled out across eight surface mount technology (SMT) assembly in 2017, providing carbon emission savings up to 35 percent. It adds it expects to have 33 SMT lines with 2 ovens per line using this new process by the end of 2018, "giving an estimated annual saving of 5,956 metric tonnes of CO2". The same year, Lenovo says it intends "to offer the new procedure for use on an industry-wide basis free of charge." It says the process can be applied to all electronics manufacturing involving printed circuit boards.

8 Philosophical Tenets Of The Dell EMC Partner Program
#DellEMC Channel Chief John Byrne has drawn kudos from partners for the way he and his team have handled the integration and unification of the company's partner program in the months since Dell's $58 billion acquisition of EMC, and now he's been recognized by Chairman and CEO Michael Dell himself. At the Dell Technologies WorldWide Leadership Meeting this week, Byrne was presented with a Dell Leadership Award. Dell presented Byrne with the "Go Big, Win Big" award, and Byrne was quick to point out that he was accepting the award on behalf of his entire channel team. The program that team has built aims to be the most complete and lucrative in the industry by streamlining processes, boosting rebates and incentives, and automating administrative tasks. The program is underpinned by several key philosophies developed to engender partner loyalty and to stoke partner aspirations to greater earnings and status.
Why Investors Are So Interested in Broadcom Stock
#Broadcom ’s enterprise storage segment In the previous part of this series, we saw that Broadcom (AVGO) is likely to witness seasonal weakness in its wireless revenue. This decline is likely to be offset by flat revenue from its wired segment and strong growth from its enterprise storage segment, which accounts for 14% of the company’s revenue. The enterprise storage segment was created through the acquisition of #LSI and #PLX Technology. Broadcom is also acquiring #Brocade Communications Systems (BRCD), which will increase the segment’s revenue contribution to 22% by the end of fiscal 2017. The segment offers storage products such as HDDs (hard disk drives), server storage, and PCIe (peripheral component interconnect express) switches and bridges. The company competes with the likes of Cavium (CAVM) and Microsemi (MSCC) in this space.

Here's the best argument for Apple buying Netflix
#Netflix is fueling a surge of revenue growth for #Apple 's App Store, according to data released by analytics firm Sensor Tower on Tuesday. Spending rose 130 percent year-over-year in 2016 in the "entertainment" category of the App Store, which includes #HBONow, #Hulu and Netflix, according to data from Sensor Tower. Netflix in particular saw revenue hit $58 million in the fourth quarter, up from just $7.9 million a year earlier, Sensor Tower said, in a report released on Tuesday. The data comes as investors are increasingly asking if Apple should buy an entertainment technology company, like Netflix, to draw down its enormous pile of cash and boost ambitious plans for the App Store.

Lenovo to build and run SAP's cloud in China
WWhat China wants, China gets – in this case an exception to #SAP 's usual practice of running its own cloud. Behind the great firewall that job's just gone to #'Lenovo, which “will deliver a new enterprise cloud solution created exclusively for customers holding licenses for the SAP #HANA platform in China.” Lenovo will also run and manage the rig for SAP's Chinese HANA customers. The “Lenovo Enterprise Cloud designed for SAP HANA” will be a RAM-crammed cloud using the Chinese company's System x3850 and x3950 X6 servers, plus the System x3650 X6 for application servers. So a nice showcase for the company's kit, and a big customer to boot which will be a fillip after recent revenue disappointments in Lenovo's data centre group. Perhaps more importantly, it will be a mighty symbol of Lenovo's smarts and ability to do big, complex, things for top software companies. SAP has partners elsewhere – such as Deloitte and AWS - but The Register is unaware of a whole-of-country deal to rival this Lenovo tie-up. The too-nauseatingly-confected-to-use canned quotes provided by both parties certainly leave no adjective unturned in pursuit of praising Lenovo's ability to take on this task. But the back story here is that China doesn't let western tech concerns do business behind the great firewall without making a substantial offering to nourish local players and develop local expertise. Hence the raft of joint ventures and other deals big companies do in China, all with a “national security” source code review before the fun starts. But SAP's not having its arm twisted here, because Lenovo can't afford to fail in this role. Who, after all, would want anything to do with the organisation that crocked SAP? ®

Dell's Karen Quintos: 'Stop trying to be perfect all the time'
#KarenQuintos remembers the moment #MichaelDell – founder of the eponymous tech giant and one of the world’s richest entrepreneurs – called her and offered her the job of chief marketing officer. Quintos had been working at Dell for the past decade, with roles spanning supply chain management, services and support. But this role was a biggie. Reporting directly to Dell, she’d become the most senior woman in the company (and the only woman with a seat at its executive leadership team table). ‘When Michael Dell offers you a job, it’s very hard to turn it down,’ says Quintos. ‘But my immediate response was: "Why me?" ‘Michael told me, "You’re the most customer-centric executive we have at Dell. You get things done. You can work across teams. And you always do what’s right for the company." He saw something in me that I hadn’t seen in myself.’ She became chief marketing officer in 2010, heading up the company’s branding, advertising, and customer data analytics. In 2013, she helped to steer the company through the largest corporate privatisation in history (‘that period was pretty stressful’), earning her the title of ‘one of the most influential CMOs in the world’ from Forbes. And then, two years later, came the sequel: a $58.1bn merger with IT giant EMC, otherwise known as The Biggest Tech Deal Ever. ‘We treated the merger as a marathon not a sprint,’ says Quintos. ‘Candidly, we had a huge advantage in being private. We weren’t beholden to the expectations of shareholders; the 90-day shot clock of Wall Street. We could handle things thoughtfully.’ And with the merger came another promotion for Quintos. She’s now chief customer officer. ‘There hadn’t been a CCO in the company before. It was a Dell first,’ she says. ‘Michael gave me the opportunity to design the role myself and figure out what responsibilities should be in there. Alongside customer satisfaction, acquisition, retention and profitability, I also head up corporate responsibility and diversity and inclusion.’ Quintos is passionate about diversity and helping more women get to the top in tech. ‘Companies need to create a culture where women can be themselves,’ she says. ‘Dell was the first in the IT industry to implement the Men Advocating Real Change (MARC) programme, which helps to create a more inclusive environment and stamp out unconscious bias.’ She says the majority of sponsors in her career have been men. ‘You need to be aware of your advocates. They are the ones who will open doors for you.’ She describes Dell as an ‘amazingly humble leader’. ‘Despite all his success, he’s not a big ego guy,’ she says. ‘I was once 15 minutes late for an important conference call with Michael and a colleague because my daughter had arrived home from school in floods of tears. The minute the conference call was over, Michael called my cell to check everything was ok; he was worried about me personally. How many other CEOs would bother to do that?’ Quintos admits that juggling a high-flying career and three kids isn’t easy. ‘You have to stop trying to be perfect all the time and accept that you’re going to have to make personal and professional tradeoffs.’ ‘And marry the right person!’ she adds ‘Make sure you’re with someone who’s supportive of you. When I took on the CMO role at Dell, my husband stepped back from his job so he could be around for our kids during their teenage years. It takes a certain kind of man do that that; someone who is confident and secure.’ Not everyone has been so supportive throughout Quintos’s career. ‘You’ll always come across the occasional knucklehead,’ she says. ‘They’re in every company. They won’t respect you and they’ll marginalise you. ‘You just have to figure out when to ignore them – and when to fight back.’

ENCS 5400, in combination with VNFs, allows customers to virtualize services, including routing, security, and WAN optimization at their branch offices. These services can then be managed remotely.
Graphene-coated copper could dramatically boost future CPU performance
Most of the time, when we talk about the potential impact of next-generation technologies on future computers, we’re talking about transistor performance. This makes sense — transistor scaling is what Moore’s law covers, and improving transistor density and design is what drove the “better, faster, cheaper,” mantra for nearly 40 years. But transistors aren’t the only area of CPU design that could benefit from dramatic improvements to underlying technology — and a team of researchers at Stanford believes it can address another critical problem that’s holding modern chips back, by building connective structures via copper and #graphene combined rather than just copper. Every modern CPU is wired together via an extensive network of copper wires, dubbed “interconnects.” These tiny copper wires carry data across the processor and throughout the entire SoC. #IBM and #Motorola introduced copper interconnects in 1997, followed by Intel in 2000. In 2000, #Intel processors contained roughly 1km of copper interconnects per square centimeter. In 2017, 14nm chips contain roughly 10km of wiring in the same space
Quantum Computers Finally Go Head-to-Head
In the red corner, weighing in with just five qubits, a quantum computer from the University of Maryland in College Park. In the blue corner, also with five qubits, its rival from #IBM. Welcome to the first fair #quantumcomputer fight. Researchers have described a series of experiments that, for the first time, saw two quantum computing devices, built using different underlying technologies, run the same algorithms to establish which would win. The qubits—the quantum equivalent of binary bits—in IBM’s chip are made from superconducting metals, while the University of Maryland’s uses electromagnetic fields to trap ytterbium ions.
The experiment was made possible because the two chips, while using different underlying physics, both run algorithms in the same way. And because IBM has opened its chip up, allowing it to be programmed online by researchers, the University of Maryland team was able to give it the same challenge as its own device.
Ultimately, the IBM device was faster—but it was also less reliable. That’s because the University of Maryland device uses qubits that are all interconnected, which means they can all share information with each other. IBM’s, meanwhile, must swap information via a central hub, and that process can cause delicate quantum states to be destroyed.

Compare container orchestration tools from AWS, Google and Azure
IT teams deploy #Docker containers, mostly to simplify the distribution of packaged enterprise apps. And container orchestration tools enable developers to take a platform as a service approach to deploying new enterprise apps on top of a collection of Docker containers. Cloud-based container services enable developers to specify the behavior of a collection of containerized apps at higher levels of abstraction. A variety of container orchestration tools from cloud providers help achieve these tasks, including #Amazon 's #EC2ContainerService (ECS), #GoogleComputePlatform 's #GoogleContainerEngine and #MicrosoftAzureContainerService. And each service offers a range of pros and cons for enterprises.

How Amazon Alexa Could Have Control Over Data Centers
You can already ask #Amazon #Echo with digital assistant Alexa for a weather report or to order a pizza delivery. But in the not-so-distant future, an IT professional will also be able to use Alexa (or Google Assistant, for that matter) to provision servers or storage in the cloud. There are already test cases online. One video from a local #AmazonWebServices (AMZN, +1.35%) meet-up in Michigan last March demonstrates how IT professionals could use Alexa to control AWS deployments, re-deploying a given workload from one AWS region to another, or requesting a company's current AWS bill. More recently, storage player Tintri posted a video showing how an IT pro can use Alexa to provision storage—as in telling the storage system how much disk space to allocate to a specific job.
