Maintaining Control of Flexible, Distributed Storage

#EnterpriseStorage has never been cheaper or easier to provision than it is now. But that does not mean it no longer presents a challenge to the enterprise.

Storage is a good example of the catch-22 that most enterprises find themselves in these days: The easier you make things for users, the tougher it gets for managers.

The Rise of Integrated IT Infrastructure Systems: Top Enterprise Use Cases

Storage has never been cheaper or easier to provision than it is now. But that does not mean it no longer presents a challenge to the enterprise.

Indeed, with storage infrastructure now distributed across the cloud and line-of-business managers capable of creating virtually any type of storage they need for a given task, the sheer diversity of media, formats and standards is making it extremely difficult to even come close to a unified, federated storage environment.

But that does not mean it is impossible. To get there, the enterprise will have to seek out innovative new ways to oversee both data and infrastructure.

For one thing, says Computerworld’s David Spark, you can target specific storage-related issues like latency and availabilityrather than shoot for the moon with an all-encompassing management approach. In this way, you can ameliorate the key issues affecting users while at the same time streamlining processes on the back end. As well, there is a lot to be said for consolidating compute and storage infrastructure under hyperconverged footprints and then implementing a robust metadata layer that will aid both manual and emerging automated management functions. In a broader sense, however, the sooner the enterprise replaces the current piecemeal deployment of storage with a more strategic approach, the sooner it will be able re-exert control over its data.

Solid state storage in the datacentre: More than a flash in the pan

As IT organisations transform their #datacentres to meet the efficiency and agility demands of the digital enterprise, flash storage is increasingly viewed as a key element

A combination of price decreases and substantial research and development investments over the past decade has meant flash storage is in use in the vast majority of enterprise datacentres.

As a result, flash is used to underpin a growing range of applications.

Flash is no longer the sole preserve of a deep-pocketed financial services firms looking to gain an edge in low-latency trading. Organisations of all sizes, and across all major verticals, areimplementing flash.

Microsoft’s open source .NET Core and ASP.NET Core hit 1.0

It’s been over a year and a half since #Microsoft first announced the open source .NET Core project, which aims to bring the core parts of @Microsoft ’s .NET framework (and its cousin, the web-focused ASP.NET Core) to #Linux, #OSX and other operating systems that the company didn’t previously support. As Microsoft announced today, .NET Core and ASP.NET Core have now hit 1.0. #Linux

More than 18,000 developers from 1,300 companies have contributed to .NET Core 1.0, Microsoft says, and notes that this new version also includes the release of the .NET Standard Library, which will make it easier for developers to “reuse their code and skills for applications that run on servers, the cloud, desktops and across any device including #Windows, #iOS and #Android.”

Google's Awareness API is now out, filled with promise and potential for abuse

#Google 's new Awareness API - part of @Google Play Services - is legitimately cool. In theory.Announced at I/O, it allows apps to access what you're doing, in a general sense, and then give you information based on that status. For now, the API offers two ways for apps to monitor your current status, per Google's blog post.

Both of these obviously have promise. The ability for Google Play Music to suggest a walking-appropriate playlist when you have headphones connected and are moving is exactly the sort of "giving you what you want before you know you want it" behavior Google has been striving to give us for years. It's the future. The Snapshot API could use your current location - a store, for example - to suggest a coupon for that store. It all sounds, to use the parlance of our times, delightful.

New graphene based material leads to flexible screens

The new material has been dubbed #GraphExeter. Like #graphene it is lightweight, strong, transparent and a good conductor of electricity. It differs from graphene in terms of not being composed of ‘pure’ graphene molecules.

@GraphExeter was created by placing molecules of ferric chloride tightly between two graphene layers produces a new system that is more than a thousand times a better conductor of electricity than graphene.

The focus of the application is with large, flat and flexible lighting. The main advantage is that the material is capable of high luminosity, beating comparable products by 50 percent greater brightness. This should aid the next generation of flexible screens. One limitation with the current developments in flexible screens is that the brightness that can be achieved decreases as the screen becomes larger. GraphExeter overcomes this.

Moreover, the lights are not only brighter, they are very resilient and they can be folded multiple, times without loss of functionality.

Further details are revealed in this University of Exeter video:

How IPv6 lays the foundation for a smarter network

By now we all know that #IPv6 is a powerful solution to a pressing problem. The world has run out of new #IPv4 addressing space, and the internet needs IPv6 to grow. What’s less widely discussed—but potentially more exciting—is how the modern version of the internet protocol won’t just make the internet bigger, but it will make it smarter. #SDN

For years, IPv6 was a tough sell. Few organizations were eager to invest in something that just made the addressing space bigger, particularly if IPv4 was already meeting their needs. Now that the pool of IPv4 addresses has run dry, the pace of transition has increased significantly. And it will only accelerate as we start to explore the full potential for network innovation that IPv6 brings to the table.

Hyperconverger Springpath pivots to OEM channel. Yes, we said pivots. What of it?

#Hyperconverged software startup @Springpath is on a @Cisco express hurtling to assault the market and bring #UCS server-based #HyperFlex systems to prominence.

Springpath CEO @TerryCunningham joined in May 2015, coming from running EVault, the cloud backup service unit of @Seagate, which #Seagate folded back into its own organisation, leaving no role for its CEO. In the fall of 2015 he drove a change of strategy to primarily go OEM. It's also developing its product to provide application layer integration. We note it has technology partnerships with @Citrix, @Veeam and @Zerto.

Mallik Mahalingam, the co-founder and original CEO, is now CTO, and the pattern here seems to be one of bringing in an experienced CEO to grow the company while the founder steps back to a technical strategy-type role. The company was founded in 2012, when there was an $8 million A funding round, followed by a B-round of $25 million in 2014, and then a C-round in fall 2015, along with a CIsco investment, both of an undisclosed amount, and the Cisco OEM deal. We think total funding is between $35 and $60 million.

Switch Chip Targets Programmable Networks

@BarefootNetworks, the high-flying networking chip startup that recently emerged from stealth mode, unveiled a zippy switch that it asserts is also fully programmable as the startup targets networking bottlenecks in software-defined datacenters.

The Palo Alto startup co-founded by chief scientist @NickMcKeown, the former Stanford University engineering professor, is claiming multiple networking records along with fully programmable hardware. Meanwhile, the switch startup has so far raised $130 million in backing from investors that include #Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) and #GoldmanSachs (NYSE: GS) Principle Strategic Investments.

The company said its #Tofino switch chip doubled the current speed record, processing packets at 6.5 terabits per second. Nevertheless, company founders stressed programmability as the differentiating factor for its chip technology, allowing network operators to specify the performance required of packet processing devices.

That means "network owners and their system vendors can determine precisely how packets are processed," the startup noted in a statement. By eliminating the "tyranny of fixed-function switch chips," Tofino would allow "software developers to program their network in much the same way they program a computer," the company added.

While nearly everything in the datacenter has changed over the last two decades, McKeown noted that the basic switch architecture has stubbornly remained "fixed-function." The prevailing view since the mid-1990s was that programmability came with a performance penalty.

T-SDN Integrated Development Environment: The Next Step in Transport Service Innovation

When #SDN technology first emerged, debates raged about whether controller interfaces should be north- or south-bound. But today, an industry consensus has been reached – and so the #T-SDN controller uses an open #NBI. However, this is only the first step towards a truly open transport network ecosystem.

We believe that in the near future, using controllers' open NBIs for quick and convenient service innovation will be the deciding factor in creation of a prosperous transport network ecosystem. Because transport technology has a high level of technical complexity, employees are required to have a high level of technical and operation expertise, and service innovation also requires high level software programming skills. This has resulted in transport service innovation having a very high employee expertise threshold for a number of years. Providing an intuitive and accessible transport service development environment is key to lowering this threshold.

The TSAP platform, through low-level interfaces and basic programming design suite, enables the controller's NBI to achieve the integration of ICT programming ability and modular visualization. This greatly reduces the threshold for programming innovation, and supports service innovation by either carriers or third-parties. In addition, as an open platform for innovation, TSAP can help carriers to quickly respond to service requirements; achieve flexibility, innovation, and autonomous programming; better manage their increasingly complex transport networks; and calmly deal with newly arising challenges. The TSAP is aimed at encouraging the industry towards co-innovation, and creating a mutually prosperous transport network ecology

HPE whitepaper: Datacentre challenges and hyperconverged and Infrastructure Sediment

Over the years, IT staff have continued to add resources and services to this business-critical location. At first, such additions weren’t that problematic; IT staff could assimilate some new technology. Over time, though, additions have become more complex and, in some cases, more expensive. Let’s look at some facts from our survey.

In its current form, the datacentre environment isn’t easy to manage, at least according to 28 per cent of survey respondents who disagreed with the statement “the existing datacentre environment is easy to manage and does not require subject-matter (resource-specific) experts for each resource. 44 per cent were neutral on this same statement, while 28 per cent agree with the statement.#HPE, #Intel

The Hype About Converged Systems

Converged systems are a hot commodity in the IT sector these days. But it looks to us like the hype over various kinds of integrated systems that weld servers and storage together into preconfigured stacks  including #hyperconverged stacks that literally merge the compute and storage layers on the same servers – is just a bit bigger than the appetite for such iron in the datacenters of the world.

According to the latest statistics from IDC, the market for converged systems, which is a broader definition of such machines that includes integrated systems, certified reference systems, and hyperconverged systems, the market for integrated systems like #Oracle ’ s #Exadata and #Exalogic platforms, seems to have settled into a fairly steady state pattern. These integrated systems include servers, disk storage, switches, and systems software for managing the whole shebang, and they come from a single vendor. The certified reference systems include the same wares, but include technologies from multiple vendors, like stacks that mix servers from @Cisco Systems and storage from either @EMC or @NetApp, for instance.
