Comtrade, ExaGrid Develop New Backup Package for Nutanix
@Comtrade Software, which makes monitoring and data protection solutions for #hyperconverged infrastructures, has hooked up with @ExaGrid, a provider of hyper-converged #secondarystorage for backup, in a new partnership to offer a backup-application-to-backup-storage solution for @Nutanix. Early last year, Comtrade launched its HYCU platform, which is purpose-built data storage protection for Nutanix servers. In recent months, Comtrade has added support for @VMware #vSphere, @Microsoft #Exchange and #SQL Server and combined it with disaster recovery and backup for Remote Office Branch Office (ROBO) environments. NetApp CEO Kurian narrows focus to flash, cloud
After keeping a low profile for his first few years on the job, @NetApp CEO @GeorgeKurian spent more time in the spotlight in 2017. NetApp celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017 -- the year it became the largest storage-only vendor following Dell's acquisition of EMC. NetApp's strategy of moving from its legacy storage products to mainly flash and clustered systems paid off, with four straight quarters of solid growth. In late 2017, NetApp belatedly entered the #hyperconverged market with the NetApp #HCI product built on @SolidFire #flash technology. The NetApp CEO really stepped into the spotlight after the vendor found itself in the center of a mass shooting in Las Vegas on the eve of its Insight user conference. Kurian established himself as the calm amid a tragic storm, as the conference went on after a one-day delay. Attendance was reduced, and the mood was somber. Kurian called for a moment of silence to acknowledge the victims, and he closed his remarks on data mobility with a moving story about his young son's battle with eye cancer. "That was a set of extraordinary circumstances," Kurian said. "We appreciate the support of everyone who stayed to help us through it." Kurian took over as NetApp CEO in 2015, following the ouster of Tom Georgens. At the time, the NetApp cloud fabric was in its infancy, and it was struggling to address a rocky Clustered OnTap rollout. After misreading the flash market, NetApp also had fallen behind all-flash competitors. Now, NetApp's all-flash FAS platform is outgrowing the market, and its cloud strategy is taking shape around its integrated Data Fabric. Traditional Storage Vendors Like HPE and DellEMC Under Fire as Cloud Vendors Upend Storage Market
Stock quotes in this article: #INTC, #HPE, #IBM, #NTAP, #ORCL, #NTNX, #VMW, #RHT, #PSTG, #WDC, #GOOGL, #FB, #AMZN, #MSFT, #CSCO Outside of mobile phones, it's tough to think of a big tech hardware field that has seen changes on the scale that enterprise storage has witnessed over the last decade. An industry whose sales once revolved around a relatively limited number of systems respectively aimed at large enterprises and small/mid-sized businesses, and which was dominated by a handful of big players, has evolved to one in which a much wider variety of hardware and software architectures are actively used. And in which the number of meaningful players has swelled. One only has to look at research firm IDC's recent sales estimates to see how the landscape is changing. After having risen by just 2.9% annually in Q2 and declining fractionally in Q1, IDC thinks total spending on enterprise storage systems grew 14% in Q3 to $11.77 billion, as an Intel Corp. (INTC) server CPU refresh lifted depressed corporate sales (for now) and capital spending by cloud giants remained strong. But less 10% of this revenue growth went to the industry's 5 biggest players, and their combined share fell to 54.9% from 59.1% a year earlier. In Q2, ahead of the Intel refresh, the top 5 vendors saw their combined storage revenue drop by nearly $1 billion to $5.8 billion. Their combined share fell to 54% from 64.9% a year earlier. IDC thinks Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE) , the industry's biggest player, saw its share drop by 2.9 percentage points in Q3 to 20.2%, and by 3.7 percentage points in Q2 to 20.1%. The declines would be larger if not for HPE's $1 billion April purchase of midmarket flash and hybrid storage array vendor Nimble Storage, which did $322 million in product sales during its last full fiscal year as an independent firm. No. 2 player Dell, which in 2016 acquired storage giant EMC, is estimated by IDC to have seen its share drop by 2.3 percentage points in Q3 to 18.8%. In Q2, when the corporate sales that Dell/EMC rely on were weaker, its share fell 7.5 percentage points to 18.4%. IBM Corp. (IBM) and Hitachi, who were tied at #4 in Q3, have also been losing share. Last quarter, their combined share fell to 8.3% from 9.6% a year ago. No. 3 player NetApp Inc. (NTAP) , which is a couple weeks removed from posting a strong October quarter report and upbeat guidance, has been faring better: Its share rose 0.3 percentage points in Q3 to 6%. But the lion's share of industry growth has gone to a group of vendors IDC refers to as "ODM Direct." They consist of contract manufacturers (many based out of Taiwan) that supply modular, low-power servers with integrated storage to third parties -- to a large degree, cloud giants such as Alphabet/Google (GOOGL) , Facebook (FB) , Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) . The designs and specs for these systems are typically created by the cloud giants themselves, in some cases for open-source initiatives such as the Facebook-spawned Open Compute Project. The systems are deployed within giant data centers relying on hyperconverged architectures that allow thousands of server/storage systems to be pooled and jointly managed, with admins able to quickly add new hardware nodes as needed. In addition, smaller independent storage vendors have been collectively gaining ground. IDC thinks everyone outside of the top-5 and ODM Direct had 24% of the market in Q3 and 22.7% in Q2, up from 23.8% and 21.3% a year earlier. The group's share are likely larger if one backs out some traditional enterprise players that have been losing share, such as Oracle Corp. (ORCL) . Clearly, the preference among cloud giants to rely on their own server/storage designs is a big headwind for old-guard storage vendors, especially as more and more enterprise workloads move to cloud infrastructures. But it also isn't helping that enterprises are also embracing distributed server/storage systems. While incumbent players claim a big piece of this pie, there's more competition here overall than there is for traditional external storage systems, and -- due to the fact that many of these systems rely on commodity hardware -- margins are often lower. Hyperconverged solutions, offered to enterprises by the likes of HPE and Cisco (CSCO) as well as upstarts such as Nutanix Inc. (NTNX) , are one piece of the pie. Nutanix's shares rose nearly 10% on Dec. 1 after the company beat estimates on the back of 46% revenue growth and 32% billings growth, and also issued strong guidance. The growing popularity of object storage -- an approach to storage that does away with traditional file systems and folders (like the ones within PC operating systems) in favor of a distributed pool of storage "objects," are another factor. Object storage typically relies on clusters of commodity servers (potentially, but not necessarily, hyperconverged systems) rather than proprietary storage arrays. IBM bought object storage hardware/software firm Cleversafe for $1.3 billion in 2015, and has since reported seeing strong demand for its object storage lineup. Then there's the rising adoption of software platforms that in one form or another can pool the storage resources of many servers and let them be jointly managed/accessed. Dell EMC directly offers one such solution (called ScaleIO), and its VMware Inc. (VMW) unit offers another (called vSAN) meant for use with VMware server virtualization software. But open-source platforms such as Gluster and Ceph -- both are backed by Red Hat Inc. (RHT) -- are also gaining followings. Also: The traditional storage system market's shift away from hard drive-based systems to flash memory-based systems (all-flash arrays, or AFAs) has caused a measure of disruption. While the likes of HPE, Dell EMC and IBM are major players in this space, so are upstarts such as Pure Storage Inc. (PSTG) and Western Digital Corp.'s (WDC) recently-acquired Tegile Systems unit. Pure's sales rose 41% annually in its October quarter to $278 million. Finally, NetApp's turnaround -- fueled by strong demand for its AFAs and clustered network storage offerings, as well as innovative software for jointly managing local and cloud storage -- has become a headache for old-guard peers. NetApp's product sales rose 14% during its October quarter to $807 million. NetApp's focus on storage, and storage only, is helping it hold its ground in a tough and rapidly-changing industry environment. But many of its more diversified traditional rivals are facing tougher sledding.

HPE's Richardson Underlines Commitment To Partners With Pledge To Drive SimpliVity, Nimble Entirely Through The Channel
All of #HPE 's #SimpliVity #hyperconvergence and #Nimble storage sales are now going through partners, according to HPE Vice President of U.S. Channel Sales Terry Richardson, underscoring his company's ironclad commitment to the channel. Although HPE has undergone sweeping changes in recent years, "One thing that hasn't changed is our commitment to the channel," Richardson (pictured) said at The Channel Company's XChange 2017 conference in Orlando, Fla. on Monday.  Hand-in-hand with the complete channel commitment around SimpliVity and Nimble, Richardson encouraged partners to dive into hybrid cloud. "Embrace the shift to hybrid cloud," Richardson said. "Don't be threatened, take advantage. We're helping MSPs accelerate and helping traditional resellers transition to become MSPs." Rubrik Hires Ex-FireEye CMO In Runup To Potential IPO
#Rubrik, a developer of a #softwaredefined platform that unifies data protection, archiving and management across on-premises, cloud and #hyperconverged infrastructure environments, has hired a former security company executive as it prepares for a potential IPO. Kara Wilson, who earlier this month left FireEye, the Milpitas, Calif.-based security vendor, is now the chief marketing officer for Palo Alto, Calif.-based Rubrik.  Wilson told CRN that the chief marketing officer role is a new one for Rubrik, which previously split the responsibilities between the chief technologist who managed the company's technology direction, the head of product marketing, and the head of corporate marketing. Rubrik is currently at about the same stage in preparing for an IPO that FireEye was when she joined that company about four years ago, Wilson said. "The lessons you learn in preparing a company for an IPO and for high growth are very useful," she said. "FireEye was hiring 30 people per week at IPO time. Rubrik is in a similar position now. Passionate people and disruptive technology are what attracted Wilson to Rubrik, with the work to prepare for life as a public company an added bonus, she said. "Rubrik has built a very strong culture," she said. "We're getting more rigor for building the organization for the post-IPO world. We're building revenue and a marketing model for growth after the IPO. Rubrik has only been in business about three years, but it's built a remarkable business. It's approaching a $100 million run rate." While part of Rubrik's sales are done directly, 100 percent of the business is fulfilled through channel partners, Wilson said. "There isn't a decision that is made today that doesn't also include looking at what it means to partners," she said. Rubrik has a history of good communications with customers and partners, said John Downey, founder of NextGen Storage, a New York-based solution provider and Rubrik channel partner. "Kara has big shoes to fill at Rubrik," Downey told CRN. Downey said that, if he were a larger Rubrik partner, he would be first in line to ask Wilson to focus more on cloud-enabled organizations in the channel. "Being cloud-first is exceedingly important," he said. "Vendors and partners are doing a lot of on-prem business even as the market is opening up to the cloud transition. Rubrik needs to make sure it empowers both large and small partners to be successful."

Pure Storage, Cohesity expand partnership with FlashBlade integration
SAN FRANCISCO – #PureStorage has expanded its relationship with #hyperconverged secondary storage vendor #Cohesity. In February, the two companies announced an integration of Pure’s FlashArray//M and Cohesity DataPlatform to provide simple, snapshot-based data protection. They have now expanded their partnership, integrating Cohesity’s DataPlatform with Pure’s #FlashBlade, which provides flash based flash-based fast access to unstructured data through a native object storage-based implementation. “Our original relationship around FlashArray//M used a RESTful API to let you grab any snapshot and back it up to a Cohesity system,” said Patrick Rogers, Cohesity’s Head of Product Management and Marketing. “It allowed us to do backups of Pure snaphots while the Pure array was running. You could even then delete them on the Pure Array and use that more expensive storage for other purposes – especially since snapshots get bigger as they get older.” FlashBlade, Pure’s new product for high-performance unstructured workloads in areas like genomics, machine learning, and Big Data analytics, entered general availability in January. While it had 8 and 52 TB blades out of the gate, Pure announced a new 17 TB blade here at the Accelerate event. The new Cohesity integration means that files and objects stored on FlashBlade can be automatically protected to the Cohesity web-scale platform based on data protection policies, with users getting instantaneous, any-point-in-time access to their data on Cohesity. Vendor partnerships are a critical part of Cohesity’s go to market strategy. Late last month they announced an important new relationship with #HPE, as well as one with #Microsoft around #Azure and one with #Lenovo that for now is limited to the China market. They have special synergies with #PureStorage however, which is a key reason for their presence at Pure’s Accelerate show. “We do a lot of business with Pure customers,” Rogers said. “Customers likely to adopt Pure are looking for a better solution to adopt, and want best-in-class technology. If they want to do that in storage, they tend to be looking to do the same thing on the data protection side. They are open to change. #Nimble and #Nutanix have been big for us for the same reason.” Cohesity tries to integrate with everyone, even companies like #DellEMC, with which they don’t have a working relationship. “They have #DataDomain and we displace Data Domain, so they perceive us more as competitors than as potential partners,” Rogers said. Cohesity also found the Pure event a good one to talk with potential new partners. “There are a lot of potential new partners here for us, cutting edge technology types, who would be less likely to have been at #HPE Discover, where we were last week,” Rogers said. “They come here to view the new technology being discussed. That’s why we find this to be a great venue for us, with both the kind of partners and customers looking for innovation.” Cohesity drew a strong reception at the Accelerate event, as measured by the traffic around their booth, and the attendance at their presentation [picture inset]. Attendance at vendor sessions generally – which was easy to assess since everything was visible in the open concept approach here – was extraordinarily good by the standard of these kind of events. Most not only had every seat filled, but had several dozen people watching from just outside the ‘room.’ That reflects good advance work by Pure, but also the logistical advantages of scheduling an event at a converted 19th century factory/warehouse on the San Francisco pier, well removed from the many amenities of the city’s better-known areas near the downtown. Sadly, this was the last event for the Pier 70 venue, which will shortly be demolished to put up higher-value improvements in San Francisco’s insane real estate market

You probably expect a #hyperconvergedinfrastructure ( #HCI ) product to consist of x86 servers with local storage and fast networking. A hypervisor owns those x86 servers and runs virtual machines (VMs) as their primary workload. The local storage in the servers is combined into a storage cluster that hosts the VMs. The storage cluster is software-defined. The storage cluster software might be part of the hypervisor, or it might run in a virtual storage appliance (VSA), which is a VM. HPE Closes $650M SimpliVity Acquisition, Says First Combined Solutions With DL380 Will Ship In May
