Pivot3 Announces Large-Scale Surveillance Solution to Support Enterprise-class Video Deployments

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- @Pivot3, the #hyperconverged infrastructure performance and technology leader, today announced the release of its new large-scale surveillance solution. Designed to support video surveillance and security deployments of 500TB or more, the platform provides the performance, resiliency, scalability and ease of use that is required for large scale environments at a lower cost than any other enterprise solution. “With this new platform, Pivot3 delivers the best reliability and price point of any server and storage solution for video surveillance in the market” Tweet this Available solutions for large video surveillance and security systems are typically cost-prohibitive. While costs can be reduced by using commodity NVRs, these systems lack the resilience, scalability, ease of use and advanced functionality required for modern surveillance environments. With this latest solution, Pivot3 is streamlining large scale video, security management and storage environments by hosting video management software, security applications and storage on a modular, scalable appliance. This significantly lowers cost and delivers higher rack density for multi-PB video installations with the lowest price point in the market for scalable video surveillance infrastructure. The solution can deliver more than 6PB of storage in a single rack while supporting over 15,000 cameras (750 per node), reducing footprint, power and cooling requirements. This new offering further improves Pivot3’s industry-leading video performance, supporting up to 30,000 mbits/s of video ingest (1430 mbit/s per node), and increasing video retention times. “With this new platform, Pivot3 delivers the best reliability and price point of any server and storage solution for video surveillance in the market,” said Brandon Reich, surveillance practice leader, Pivot3. “Building on more than a decade of experience creating solutions purpose-built for video, this platform supports more cameras and delivers longer video retention times for less cost, which broadens our dependable options available for our surveillance and security customers.” Pivot3’s large-scale surveillance solution, the V5-2000, uses a highly-dense platform -- dual Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors and up to 288TB storage in two rack units -- with advanced features, including automatic failover and advanced data protection. This eliminates downtime and data loss resulting from hardware failures, providing the resilience required for mission-critical video applications. “Pivot3 delivers technology that allows us to offer highly reliable and scalable solutions to our customers while enabling us to differentiate ourselves in the market by lowering their acquisition and operational costs,” said Kit Bishop, manager of strategic growth, Johnson Controls. “This new solution brings even more value to the table, and delivers the robust enterprise-class platform that large-scale surveillance and security deployments require at an extremely compelling price point. As a result, our customers can achieve more consolidation that provides immediate ROI along with the option to add additional workloads as their needs evolve.”

Pivot3 Jumps Into Hybrid Cloud Game, Moves HCI Stack to AWS

Offering (or at least talking about) a #hybridcloud service has become almost a requirement for hyperconverged infrastructure ( #HCI) software vendors. And now @Pivot3 has joined the party with its Cloud Edition on @Amazon Web Services (AWS). The platform allows customers to run the same HCI stack in AWS and in on-premises data centers. “A lot of the features customers like in our hyperconverged software platform running in on-premises environments around policy automation and workload prioritization, they can now take advantage of that in a cloud environment,” said Ben Bolles, VP of products at Pivot3.
Support for @Microsoft #Azure and @Google Cloud will come later this year, he said.
The primary uses cases with this edition, which will be generally available in the second half of this year, include backup and disaster recovery. Using AWS eliminates the need to stand up a second data center or co-location facility.
Intelligent Cloud Engine
The new platform also uses something that Pivot3 calls its Intelligent Cloud Engine. It builds on the company’s policy-based quality of service (QoS) engine, which automates data placement and data protection tasks based on service level agreements and business priorities.
“The Intelligent Cloud Engine essentially is putting a name on all the capabilities we have for our policy-based management, and all the work we do around data protection and data management,” Bolles said.
The company plans to add an archive use case.
“We’ll have policies built around that so that our software will automatically figure out what data should reside on premises and what data should go up to the cloud,” Bolles said. “Being able to automate workloads’ movements based on the policies customers set within our software — that would be a main difference compared to VMware or others that might run on AWS or Azure.”
HCI Stacks for Hybrid Cloud
Most leading HCI software vendors already have a hybrid cloud play. VMware Cloud on AWS launched about six months ago. Microsoft Azure Stack, which lets enterprises build a private-cloud version of the Azure public cloud in their own data centers, began shipping last September.
And Nutanix has been talking about its Xi public cloud service since last summer (even though it’s not slated to launch until later this year).
Is Pivot3 too late to the hybrid cloud game?
“It is definitely not too late for Pivot3,” said Mike Leone, a senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “The Pivot3 hybrid cloud approach is slightly different and more intelligent that many of its competitors.”
The difference, he said, is the company’s policy-based management, which can be used to optimize resource utilization. “And with resource utilization being the key cost component in the cloud, the more intelligent that resource utilization can be managed the better,” Leone said.
Smarter Hybrid Cloud?
Eric Slack, a senior analyst at Evaluator Group, agreed.
“Pivot3’s taking the right approach, and that’s what important in the long term,” Slack said. “VMware has a pretty good story. Nutanix has a head start on a lot of folks, too. But in terms of what Pivot3 is doing, they’ve been talking about automated policy management and their quality of service engine for three years. They are using that same intelligence, that same decision making [in the new hybrid cloud platform] so that cloud just becomes one more destination to put stuff.”
Slack said Pivot3’s technology is sound, and its policy engine differentiates it from other HCI software stacks.
“I don’t think they’ve gotten as much traction in the market on their quality of service engine,” Slack said. “But one of the things about that kind of technology: it lends itself to analytics. And that’s the kind of thing people are looking for in a cloud infrastructure.”

Pivot3, VMware Edge HCI Pushes Hyperconverged to Remote Offices

Reduced complexity and smaller #datacenter footprints are a couple of the benefits of #hyperconverged infrastructure ( #HCI). So it makes sense that systems, which combine core storage and compute functionality into a single, highly virtualized platform, would play well in remote and branch offices ( #ROBO ) and network-edge locations. This week @Pivot3 launched a hyperconverged infrastructure product specifically designed for ROBO and edge computing. @VMware at last month’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona announced its own edge HCI product. And don’t forget @Riverbed #SteelFusion, said @Mike Leone, a senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “For some reason it doesn’t land on many HCI lists, but it should,” he wrote in an email. “They integrate their WAN optimization technology into their HCI solution, meaning organizations can consolidate yet another component at the edge. And with the network being so important at the edge, that’s a big differentiator for them.” HCI can reduce capex and simplify both hardware and software management at remote offices, said IDC analyst Eric Sheppard. “HCI is designed to be up and running quickly,” Sheppard said. “You’re coalescing all of the storage elements down to a cluster of software-defined, industry-standard servers. So rather than having an edge environment where you have disparate hardware that needs to be managed, you end up with a highly virtualized and software-defined solution where all of the management is super simplified through automation or centralized management.”

Nutanix Tops Gartner's Magic Quadrant For Hyper-Converged Infrastructure

IT research firm Gartner is out with its first-ever #HyperConverged Infrastructure Magic Quadrant, which ranks vendors based on their technology vision and ability to execute in the market.  Hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), which combines server, storage and networking technologies inside a single platform, is making inroads in the enterprise in 2018, according to Gartner. #HCI pioneer @Nutanix was ranked the top vendor on Gartner's 2018 quadrant. "Nutanix is ranked the highest in vision and execution on the Magic Quadrant. They have about 7,800 customers right now. Their deployments are mostly in large centralized data centers rather than smaller sites," said Mark Haranas, senior associate editor at CRN.  "Against some of the stiff competition like @DellEMC and @HP, Nutanix came out on top. These bigger competitors can sometimes underprice them, but Nutanix is now best-of-breed software. "Somewhat shocking is that @Cisco didn’t make the leadership board in this Magic Quadrant," he added. "Gartner ranked them high on execution, but not so much on vision. So, they’re going to need to make some changes as far as their vision strategy to make that leader board." Software company Pivot3 also shows promise, ranked as a challenger on the Magic Quadrant. The small company is in high demand largely due to its hyper-converged solution for video surveillance. Gartner predicts that by 2020, 20 percent of business-critical applications currently deployed on three-tier IT infrastructure will transition to hyper-converged infrastructure.

Arrow Adds Pivot3 to HCI Platform to Line Card

The fastest growing sector of the data center from an infrastructure perspective is #hyperconverged infrastructure ( #HCI ) platforms that unify the management of compute and storage. In general, HCI platforms have been limited to the lower end of the market because they typically come in the form of an appliance that doesn't offer the same level of scale that can be attained by traditional rack-based systems. But as HCI platforms continue to advance, they are starting to not only be used in a scale-out fashion, faster I/O backplanes such as #NVMe in next-generation servers are creating an opportunity to deploy HCI platforms in place of rack-based systems. With that opportunity in mind, #Arrow Electronics has added #Pivot3, a provider of an Acuity HCI platform that partners can deploy on standard x86 servers or resell on appliances built by #Lenovo. Mark Maisano, vice president of global channels at @Pivot3, says that while there's no shortage of options when it comes to HCI platforms, larger rivals such as @Dell EMC, @Cisco and @Hewlett-Packard Enterprise are conflicted about the opportunity. They all have a large installed base of rack-systems that they are trying to entice customers to upgrade to next-generation converged infrastructure systems. But HCI platforms such as @Acuity can not only scale much higher these days, the total cost of owning them is substantially less. Maisano says the alliance with Arrow creates an opportunity for partners to more aggressively pursue those opportunities. HCI platforms are critical to partners because more workloads are clearly heading to the cloud. IT organizations need a compelling argument to keep workloads running in a local data center. In many cases, over a two- to three-year period, it's less expensive to run certain classes of workloads locally than it is to host them in the public cloud. Channel partners that can make that case are likely to be warmly received by internal IT teams that have a vested interest in maintaining control over their data center environment. Naturally, competition across the HCI category is already fierce. Channel partners looking for one last point of differentiation, however, should consider all their options.

Highly-transactional application workloads deliver maximum performance, with lower cost per transaction. Acuity is the industry’s first priority-aware HCI solution that combines an NVMe flash data path with an advanced quality of service (QoS) engine, enabling IT to confidently consolidate mixed application workloads onto a common infrastructure. The latest version of Acuity also includes greater support for graphics-intensive VDI with density and performance-optimized NVIDIA Tesla GPUs and support for higher RAM capacity in the Acuity nodes to drive application density. HCI has proved itself as the ideal platform for VDI environments, and this release will allow customers to deliver a consistently great VDI user experience along with accelerating time to deploy and lowering the total cost of ownership by achieving higher user densities using Acuity for graphics-intensive VDI. Customer Feedback Echoes Lab Test Results “We’re very impressed with the results we’re seeing from Acuity. The solution is NVMe and sits right on the PCIe bus, plus it’s already four times faster than what we currently have in our environment,” said Phil Lisk, CIO, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office. “The quality of service layer changes the game for us. With improved performance, simple scalability and the ability to reduce our footprint while running more workloads, including our mission critical applications, we know we will get guaranteed performance out of those applications and we can do more with less.” “We’re bullish on Acuity because it responds to our clients’ growing demand for hyperconverged systems that can support broader ranges of workloads on a single platform,” said Steward Sonneland, Principle and CEO, Strategic Integrators. “The combination of Pivot3’s mature, policy-based QoS engine with the accelerated performance of ultra-low latency NVMe PCIe flash is really attractive to our clients who require multiple, mixed application workloads with higher VM densities. This means they’re achieving solid economic advantages, benefiting from a far easier environment to manage with higher end-user satisfaction. Finally, we love the fact that Pivot3’s configuration and pricing model is designed to support a wide range of customer requirements, allowing clients to start small and grow as their business warrants. Pivot3’s performance advantage often allows us to price a deal lower than the competition, since it requires less hardware to do the same job. It’s a pretty incredible solution.” “As more organizations start to use HCI to support core datacenter functions, it will become increasingly important to provide the highest level of performance and support for broader application workload management,” said Ron Nash, CEO of Pivot3. “Acuity is the fastest, simplest and smartest HCI available, and we are thrilled to see so many customers reaping its many benefits. As adoption increases and customers progress closer to a software-defined datacenter, Acuity will be there to deliver greater business value and meet the evolving needs of IT.”
