6 Software-Defined Storage Companies to Watch

While the traditional storage industry has been largely experiencing anemic growth, at a 2.7 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2021, there are pockets of the market that are seeing high growth and revenue. One such pocket is software-defined storage ( #SDS ). This segment is growing at a 13.5 percent CAGR through 2021, according to IDC. SDS is penetrating IT infrastructures to meet the needs of the next-generation datacenter. As companies transform their businesses and move operations to the cloud, they are adopting SDS for greater agility, reduced costs, and greater operational efficiency.

IDC defines SDS using the following criteria, “storage software that runs on commodity hardware, does not require any proprietary hardware components like custom ASICs [application-specific integrated circuit chips], and is a standalone storage system.”

Companies are abandoning traditional hardware-defined storage designs for software-defined storage models. “The legacy systems have improved their software to make them easier to use, borrowing some of the ideas of SDS,” said Eric Burgener, IDC research vice president of enterprise storage. “But they will generally always be more complex to manage, and certainly more expensive to buy and maintain.”

SDS is a subset of the larger storage market, and it can be split into four segments: block, file, object, and hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), according to IDC. It’s worth noting that Gartner segments this differently into two categories: infrastructure (which would include block, file, object, and hyperconverged) and management (which coordinates the delivery of storage services).

VMware was one of the first companies to support this newer storage model with its software-defined data center and vSAN technology. But as the SDS market continues to grow, there are more companies coming forward with SDS innovations. We’ve identified six SDS companies that we believe are worth watching as this market continues to experience growth.


Cloudian


Cloudian set out to bring object storage to the enterprise. The company launched in 2011 with its flagship product, HyperStorage, a hybrid cloud storage platform.

It has recently updated the platform to include on-premises data centers and multiple public clouds, and it acquired SDS file storage company Infinity Storage. The founder of Infinity invented the write-once-read-many (WORM) file system that most SDS platforms use, including Cloudian. Prior to the acquisition, the two companies launched HyperFile, which used Infinity’s file storage software built into Cloudian’s storage platform.

The platform is widely seen as a way to consolidate data storage into a managed environment, while maintaining cloud-like object storage without obstructing the data.

Cohesity


Cohesity was started in 2013 by Mohit Aron who previously co-founded Nutanix. The hyperconverged secondary storage company has been growing rapidly, and it saw a 600 percent increase in sales revenue over the previous year in 2017.

The company’s data storage platform, Orion, seeks to eliminate secondary storage silos by consolidating an enterprises on-premises and cloud-based secondary storage silos onto a centralized, hyperconverged platform.

Last year, Cohesity updated the platform to combine data protection and scalable file and object storage. The update enabled enterprises to also use Orion as a backup system and a searchable archive for large amounts of structured and unstructured data.

Datrium


Datrium was founded in 2012 by Data Domain and VMware veterans to create a slightly different model for storage than HCI infrastructure players. It provides open converged infrastructure for hybrid clouds in a way that doesn’t require the overhead of HCI. It does, however, integrate some features of HCI such as scale-out backup, cloud-based disaster recovery, and the ability to scale automatically to overcome bottleneck problems.

When Datrium launched, up until last year, it only had support for VMware servers and virtual machines (VMs), but it added storage support for open source platforms and Linux containers and Docker persistent volumes. This update enables enterprises to manage multiple environments from a single source. The company also enhanced its private cloud infrastructure platform with new scaling functions.

Portworx


Portworx is a growing container storage company, which is packaged as a container itself. The company, founded in 2014, seeks to provide container-native storage and enable container use for DevOps and production environments.

Its cloud native data management platform provides automated data services, including data persistence and security, and it saves and stores container data. It can run on any infrastructure using a container, including Kubernetes, Mesosphere DC/OS, and Docker Swarm.

Portworx recently launched an open source stateful storage project, STORK, a storage orchestrator runtime for Kubernetes. The project allows DevOps teams to run stateful applications on Kubernetes and offer storage health monitoring.

Mesosphere recently became a reseller of Portworx’s products, combining Mesosphere’s automated compute service with Portworx’ automated storage platform.

Rubrik


Rubrik provides automated data backup, recovery, search, cloud, and development services across cloud and on-premises environments. The company launchedthe ninth release of its data management platform, Alta, in June 2017 with additional support for a number of physical and virtual environments.

In February, Rubrik acquired NoSQL data backup company, Datos IO. This acquisition is meant to help its enterprise customers undertake digital transformations and AI initiatives. In April, the company released a software-as-a-service platform, Polaris, for data management applications.

While Rubrik and Cohesity are competitors in this market, Rubrik disagrees on the use of the term “hyperconverged secondary storage,” deeming it a marketing term and preferring “cloud data management.”

Like Cohesity, it has seen enormous growth in the past few years as the market explodes. Rubrik was named as an alternative acquisition target for VMware by a VMware investor.

SoftNas


SoftNas launched its first product, Cloud NAS, in 2013. Its goal was to fill a gap in terms of cloud native services by giving a native storage experience in a cloud environment, according to Arun Chandrasekaran, VP and distinguished analyst for Data Center and Cloud Infrastructure at Gartner.

Last year, the company released a new version of Cloud NAS and three additional products as it rebranded itself as a hybrid cloud platform provider.

CloudNAS works as an alternative to hardware-based storage, on-premises network attached storage (NAS), storage area networks (SAN), and file servers. It replaces these with cloud object storage, which can be more easily scaled to accommodate enterprise needs.

The three products it launched as part of its makeover are set to make it faster and easier to migrate applications to the cloud while providing backup and recovery.

Datrium Announces Cloud DVX for Amazon Web Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- #Datrium, the leading provider of #OpenConvergedInfrastructure for #hybridclouds, today announced @Datrium #Cloud #DVX, a cloud-native instance of Datrium DVX that offers recovery services for VMs running in DVX on-premises. Cloud DVX includes global cloud deduplication and provides the simplest and most efficient approach to VM and vDisk level backup and recovery available within a converged or hyperconverged infrastructure system offering.  Adoption of the public cloud for offsite backup and recovery has been a challenge because the size of backup data, the need for regular full backups, and the lack of adequate data reduction limits the economic and practical viability of doing so.   According to Gartner1, "Deduplication is the key to reducing cloud storage costs, but most backup software's cloud connectors do not support deduplication, and other choices are limited to a few cloud gateways and emerging integrated backup appliances with native cloud gateway function." Datrium storage system injects flash into the equation

The new @Datrium hardware includes the all-flash #F12X2 Data Node and @Intel #Skylake -based #CN2100 #ComputeNodes that support nonvolatile memory express ( #NVMe ) flash. Datrium said an all-flash F2X12 cluster scales to 500 TB of effective capacity with #DVX inline compression. Datrium also unveiled the next generation of its disk-based Data Nodes. The D12X4B storage nodes can be clustered for up to 1 PB of effective capacity. CN2100 servers work with both flash and disk Data Nodes. Datrium launched in 2015 with DVX software-defined storage for server-side flash. Datrium strips out durable storage from compute nodes, but keeps data services in the server. The Datrium Compute node captures a write in host-based flash and mirrors a copy to nonvolatile RAM in Datrium Data Nodes. Each DVX host in a cluster can access shared storage on DVX Data Nodes. The system has always captured writes in flash, but the earlier Datrium DVX nodes used only disk for storage. Craig Nunes, Datrium's vice president of marketing, said the new models extend flash to backup and secondary storage. Those workloads traditionally are associated with spinning disk. "We've talked to a number of customers that are very interested in shifting their data centers to an all-flash infrastructure. People are already moving down that path from a primary storage perspective, but we've talked to folks who want to move anything stored locally to flash. Then they [plan to] replicate to disk or cloud for long-term retention," Nunes said.

Datrium Unveils Next Generation DVX With Flash End-To-End For Tier 1 Apps

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- @Datrium, the leading provider of #OpenConvergedInfrastructure for #hybridclouds, today announced its next generation #DVX system with Flash End-to-End ( #E2E ), along with additional availability features for tier 1 apps. What’s behind this new storage solution for the hyperconverged world?

Sometimes it’s really easy to have too much of good thing. In a hyperconverged, scaled-out backup system, there can be numerous motherboards, multiple persistence drives and hardware duplicates as far as the eye can see. That’s why @BrianBiles (pictured), co-founder and chief executive officer of #DatriumInc., looked for a storage solution that could bring order to the chaos, and in doing so he created something no one had quite seen before. “We stripped it down so it’s way more cost efficient and, as it turns out, way more scalable,” Biles said. “We’re able to combine compute, primary and secondary storage in one scalable infrastructure. That’s never been done our way before.” Biles told his story during a visit to theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio, and spoke with co-hosts John Furrier (@furrier) and Dave Vellante (@dvellante) at VMworld 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Datrium Announces Split Provisioning For Simple Private Cloud Consolidation At Rackscale

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- #Datrium, the leading provider of #OpenConvergedInfrastructure for private clouds, today announced Datrium #DVX 3.0 with Split Provisioning, a fundamentally new and different method of scaling converged infrastructure for private clouds. Disaggregating network, compute and storage allocation demystified

Enter #disaggregation. Separating an aggregate into its components isn't a new concept, but this approach is assuming greater importance. For IT, disaggregation means breaking a computer down to its core elements -- compute, memory, I/O, storage, cache, network fabric and so on -- to implement more-cost-effective, agile infrastructures and more-efficient storage allocation. But why do this now after a decade of aggregating IT resources through concepts like hyper-convergence? Scaling resources individually is often more-cost-effective than scaling them as combinations. The idea of disaggregation is to create pools of individual resources using many computers and then allot appropriate combinations of resources -- memory, CPU, cache, network fabric and storage allocation -- on demand to serve individual applications. Done correctly, disaggregation enables standing up and breaking down infrastructures almost instantaneously, with resource utilization soaring past 80% and management costs decreasing with the resulting automation of storage allocation. The first day of the press tour kicks off in California

#Rubrik, #BigSwitch Networks and #Datrium met with the press tour on its first day in Silicon Valley Rubrik Rubrik kicked off the press tour by introducing journalists to a new product and talking to them about the company at its office in Palo Alto. #Alta is Rubik's ninth product release and has a number of new features including database support for #Oracle, #SQL instant recovery and also supports #CloudOn, which provides application mobility across data centre and cloud. 

Having raised $180 million in Series D funding in April at a $1.3 billion valuation, for a total of $292 million, Rubrik plans to IPO "at some point", according to corporate marketing VP, John Koo.

With 400 employees and offices in Europe and Asia, the company is looking to recruit a lot more engineers too, in order to keep up its pace of innovation.

The company has identified a market opportunity in copy data management, which includes data protection and recovery, archiving, replication, file systems, storage and more - meaning it's going up against giants such as Dell EMC and Veritas.

Storage Arrays and Hyperconvergence for Private Cloud Are on a Death Watch

#Datrium announces today why traditional storage arrays and hyperconvergence ( #HCI ) are dying: datacenters without big drawbacks. Datrium DVX

Complexity is the top problem plaguing data centers and the move to private and hybrid clouds. With the cost and rigidity of traditional storage arrays, the market is looking to #SDS and #hyperconverged infrastructure on standard x86 platforms. However, these technologies also have compromises, including a forklift overhaul of the server infrastructure, server maintenance complexities, network bottlenecks, and high cost to scale. Is your data safe? A deeper look at Datrium In-Flight and At-Rest AES-XTS-256 encryption

Im starting to discuss some of the features and design aspects that got me enthusiastic about #Datrium tech. A feature that has been driving many interesting conversations with customers is the new #BlanketEncryption. First, let’s rewind a bit. (If you only want to find out about the product features and skip my long-winded write-up just skip the bottom of the article.) Gemalto’s Breach Level Index (BLI) tracks publicly disclosed breaches across the globe, measuring their severity via a multidimensional index based on factors including the number of compromised records, the source and the type of breach. In March 2017, Gemalto released the BLI findings revealing that 1,792 data breaches led to almost 1.4 billion data records being compromised worldwide during 2016, an increase of 86% compared to 2015.
