ARM Reaches Into the Data Center, Competes With Intel

When talking about #softwaredefined networking ( #SDN) and network functions virtualization ( #NFV), we often talk about software that can run on x86 servers. The term x86 refers to instruction set architectures for silicon chips. Most x86 servers that run SDN and NFV software use chips from either @Intel or @AMD. But that could change as @ARM is making a concerted effort to take market share in this segment. ARM doesn’t make chips. It creates the intellectual property (IP) building blocks for a chip. And while x86 refers to an instruction set architecture, ARM also has a set of defined instructions. But instead of manufacturing chips, ARM gives the instruction set architecture to its customers — such as @Qualcomm, @Broadcom, @NXP, and @Cavium — and those companies manufacture the chips.

Cavium™ Expands Industry Partnerships to Drive OCP NIC 3.0

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- OCP Summit -- Today, @Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable secure and intelligent processing for enterprise, #datacenter, wired and wireless networking, announced that it is collaborating with @Hewlett Packard Enterprise (#HPE), to bring #hyperscale-inspired designs based on #Open Compute Project into mainstream enterprise IT. The introduction of Cavium FastLinQ® 41000 Series 10/25GbE NICs in OCP 2.0 form factor for HPE's Cloudline Servers and broad collaboration on driving the emerging OCP NIC 3.0 standard will enable mainstream delivery of the most efficient designs for scalable computing to Cavium and HPE's enterprise and cloud service provider customers. Tier-1 hyperscale buyers define leading-edge operational efficiency and have the skill set along with the purchasing power to request or design custom and semi-custom hardware, which enables operational cost savings and performance benefits to enable their businesses to run more efficiently. Enterprise IT organizations and cloud service providers outside the hyperscale category often lack the scale and skill set for custom hardware design but are increasingly under more pressure to improve efficiency and provide competitive differentiation for their business. As a result, minimizing capital expenses and operating expenses is a key priority for Enterprise IT as they seek disruptive innovations or new business models to achieve their goals. These organizations are closely tracking hyperscale buyers' actions and are looking for ways to leverage hyperscale best practices in their own IT environments. To optimize visibility, improve efficiencies, and achieve collaborative design opportunities with the Enterprise datacenter supply chain, CIO and CTOs are demanding technologies that are considered "open."

Cavium Programmable Switch Family Reaches for Hybrid Cloud Market

#Cavium expanded its #Xpliant programmable Ethernet switch family to include new products targeting the hybrid cloud environment. Cavium said the XP70 series can scale from 1 Tb/s to 1.8 Tb/s, and is targeted as a connectivity upgrade for enterprises, data centers, and carrier networks. The XP60 series can scale from 280 Gb/s to 720 Gb/s, and is designed for the campus, embedded, and carrier access markets.

The new products slide in under the XP80 line, which can scale up to 3.2 Tb/s.

John Harrsen, director for Cavium’s marketing switch platform group, said the new products fit into a number of market segments, including hybrid cloud, radio access, and the gigabit passive optical network (GPON) market. The products are targeted at deployments looking to scale from 1-gigabit Ethernet to 10-GbE support for the XP60, and up to 25-GbE support for the XP70.

The new products leverage the same programmable engine as the XP80. Cavium said this supports software migration for those currently using the XP80 platform and access to the Xpliant software tools.

Cavium explained its platform enables a “true” software-defined networking (SDN) support that it claims is the first of its kind at the supported speeds. The company said the support also applies to flexible routing and header formatting required for scaling network functions virtualization (NFV) solutions.

“What is relevant to us is that companies are starting to use SDN control framework for PON aggregation,” Harrsen said. “We are seeing environments where services are being provisioned using an SDN controller. This is a network management decision that was made and basically changes the paradigm on how the chips work. We are able to differentiate ourselves in the GPON aggregation market to support the control plane as an SDN controllable plane.”

Harrsen noted the new products also take into account the growing virtualization of the server environment, with greater use of hybrid cloud and containers.

“It’s interesting to watch how servers are being virtualized,” Harrsen said. “The new things we are seeing are the use of containers. A basic server can support more containers than [virtual machines]. This allows for better utilization of that server. We have enhanced our products to support this increased utilization.”

Programmable switch platforms continue to gain steam in the market.

#Barefoot Networks recently scored deals with China-based #Alibaba Group, #Baidu, and #Tencent Holding to deploy its #Tofino switches running the open source P4 language and targeted at programmable forwarding plane technology. Those deals followed up on a domestic win with #ATT, which signed on to become the first telecommunications provider to deploy the Barefoot switches.

#Broadcom last month said it was adding programmability to its chip-based switches designed for data centers, enterprises, and service provider networks. The market giant said the programmable switch series includes support for protocol parsing, processing, and virtualization services.

Cavium pays $1 billion for QLogic, storage

After months of shopping itself, storage networking vendor #QLogic has a buyer. #Cavium pays $1 billion

Networking semiconductor vendor Wednesday said it will pay $1 billion for the FC and Ethernet adapter company in a deal expected to close in the third quarter of 2016. The deal adds to the evidence that storage networking is a best fit as part of a larger Ethernet-dominated networking company.

#Cisco kicked off the trend of combining networking and storage when the Ethernet giant stared selling Fibre Channel SAN switchesin 2003. The FC connectivity market has seen a great deal of consolidation since then, with FC vendors either going away or joining forces with Ethernet companies.

#Avago Technologies acquired QLogic rival #Emulex for $606 million in 2015. That deal was sandwiched between Avago’s purchases of storage and networking chip firm #LSI and networking connectivity vendor Broadcom.
