Intel Teases Upcoming QLC SSD For Datacenters

@Intel has started production of their first datacenter #PCIe #SSD using #QLC #3DNAND #flashmemory, which stores four bits per memory cell. This isn't a full product announcement and we don't even have a proper name for the new SSD, just a mention that it is part of a new D5 product family for datacenters—which may signal a reorganization of Intel's naming scheme for SSDs. Intel will be sharing more information in a few weeks at Flash Memory Summit August 7-9, where Intel VP Rob Crooke is scheduled to give a keynote speech on August 8. Earlier this year, Intel confirmed that they would be producing QLC SSDs in the second half of 2018, and that they were putting up to 20TB in a 2.5" U.2 drive, but it is not yet clear whether that configuration is one that's going into mass production at this time. Intel is expecting this to be the first QLC SSD available for this market segment. Micron has already launched an enterprise SATA SSD using QLC NAND. No consumer SSDs with QLC NAND have been announced yet. Samsung, Toshiba and Western Digital have been talking about their QLC NAND for at least a year, but of them only Toshiba has confirmed plans to mass produce QLC on the current 64L 3D NAND process. Samsung has put off QLC until their 96L generation, which has just entered mass production but only of small TLC dies so far, so they are unlikely to be in mass production of QLC SSDs until late this year or early next year.

Toshiba's Investing ¥7 billion In 7th NAND Fab

With the dust settled, the feud wiped clean with manufacturing partner @WesternDigital, and a $17.7 billion cash infusion from investor @BainCapital, @Toshiba is ready to let loose with new memory technologies coming from new manufacturing facilities. Toshiba currently has Fab 6 (a manufacturing facility) under construction with a completion date estimated for Q4 2018. That hasn't slowed the company from lining up a new facility in Kitakami, Japan. Toshiba announced plans to invest ¥7 billion ($1.062 billion) in site preparation and initial construction for Fab 7. The news follows other announcements this year to increase memory manufacturing at its @Yokkaichi facility.

@WesternDigital plans to enter into an agreement with @Toshiba to work together in the new Kitakami facility. @Toshiba and Western Digital's joint venture will push forward (as it should) to take on rivals @Samsung, @Intel @Micron Flash Technologies, and @Sk Hynix.

This has been a record year for new #NAND memory investment. We've seen all of the NAND manufacturers start, complete, or announce new facilities in 2017. The flash shortage certainly helped to pump up profits in 2017 and it looks like the companies will put that money to good use.

The current state of the market is 64-layer memory, but that will soon be a passing as companies prepare for the next chapter that will scale to 96-layers and beyond. We're already starting to see the shortage subside and retail product pricing decline. New innovative products are coming to market using higher bit per die NAND, like the Toshiba XG5 and Crucial MX500.

The new facilities will enable companies to bring new technologies to market even faster. Instead of retrofitting fabs that are up and running, the new production (and time to ramp up) can take place in a new location. This will bring 4-bit per cell (QLC) NAND to market even faster. We even expect to see working prototype at CES with QLC memory at CES 2018.

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- #Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation today announced the addition of an 10-terabyte (TB[1]) SATA model to its MG06 series of 3.5-inch[2], enterprise capacity class hard disk drives (HDD). Shipments start from today. The continuing progress of digitization, most recently the quickening expansion of IoT and the increasing reliance on cloud services means that more information is being generated and stored than ever before, and that the rate of its creation only continues to increase. The data centers and cloud-based services that use this data constantly require higher-capacity, higher-performance HDDs. Toshiba’s MG06 series HDDs meet industry requirements by deploying an improved magnetic recording head and disk magnetic layer, and now deliver up to 10TB of capacity with air-based HDDs, a 25%[3] increase over the maximum capacity of the earlier MG05 series. The HDDs achieve a sustained transfer rate of 237 MiB/s[4,5], and a 25%[6] improvement in operating life that boosts MTTF[7] to 2,500,000 hours. These improvements in capacity, speed and reliability can contribute to the lower system TCO (total cost of ownership). The new HDDs support both industry-standard 512emulation (512e) and 4K native (4Kn) advanced format sector technologies, for use in legacy applications requiring 512 sector lengths using aligned-write environments, and are also suitable for the latest generation of servers and storage systems. Customers also can select 512e models supporting SIE (Sanitize Instant Erase), which realize fast invalidation of data recorded on the disks, allowing for efficient disposal and reuse. Toshiba will continue to develop and offer products meeting customer demands. Notes [1] Definition of capacity: Toshiba defines a terabyte (TB) as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system, such as Microsoft Operating System and/or pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary. [2] "3.5-inch" refers to the form factor of HDDs. It indicates the size of the disks, not the HDD's physical size. [3] Comparison between MG05 series: 8 TB and MG06 series: 10 TB [4] Read and write speeds may vary depending on the host device, read and write conditions, and file size. [5] A mebibyte (MiB) is 220, or 1,048,576 bytes. [6] Comparison between MG05 series: 2M hour and MG06 series: 2.5M hour [7] MTTF (mean time to failure) is not a guarantee or estimate of product life; it is a statistical value related to mean failure rates for a large number of products, which may not accurately reflect actual operation. The actual operating life of the product may differ from the MTTF.

Toshiba Agrees to Sell Chip Business to Bain, Apple Consortium for $18 Billion

A consortium including private-equity firm #BainCapital and technology giant #Apple ( #AAPL ) have signed a letter of intent to buy #Toshiba 's (6502.JP) #NAND memory-chip manufacturing unit for more than $18 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. The agreement could be announced later Wednesday in Japan, according to the report citing people familiar with the matter. The consortium also includes #SeagateTechnology ( #STX ) and #DellTechnologies , the report noted. The news comes after it was reported last week that Apple had threatened to stop buying NAND flash chips from #WesternDigital ( #WDC ) if Western takes control of Toshiba's chip operations. Western, which has for months been taking Toshiba to court over Toshiba’s proposed sale of the NAND factory it owns, had been presumed to be the strongest bidder in the running for the factory. Other potential suitors include Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision (Foxconn), but it faced an uphill battle as the Japanese government would prefer to choose a bidder with fewer ties to China. Toshiba is selling its memory-chip division to help cover big losses at U.S. nuclear business Westinghouse, which filed for bankruptcy in March. Toshiba’s liabilities exceeded assets by nearly $5 billion as of June 30. Shares in Toshiba were recently trading 1.2% up at JPY334 a share and ,despite its difficulties, have gained 18% so far this year.
