Rack-scale flash is flash-only storage that uses a high-speed interface to connect the storage more directly to the CPU than with a traditional storage array. The most common connection is nonvolatile memory express (NVMe) connected via a network fabric. This interface is called NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF).
Rack-scale flash is also known as shared flash storage because it creates a pool of storage that is shared by servers over the high-speed interconnect inside one or more racks. Others call the concept of sharing compute, storage and networking as resource pools composable infrastructure.
By using the NVMe protocol, rack-scale flash vendors can deliver much lower latency while keeping the same throughput levels available from network transports such as 32 gigabit Fibre Channel (FC) or 40/50/100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE). The lower latency improves the IOPS of the overall system, making rack-scale flash best suited for high-performance computing needs. Examples include artificial intelligence, real-time analytics of big data and in-memory database systems.
Rack-scale flash vendors
There are two main types of rack-scale flash suppliers: those that use off-the-shelf solid-state drives (SSDs) and those that use custom flash modules. The former are generally startups such as Apeiron Data Systems, E8 Storage, Excelero and Mangstor. The latter are rack-scale flash vendors such as tech giants IBM and Hitachi Vantara.
Two early startups are Pure Storage, founded in 2009, and DSSD Inc., founded in 2010. Pure began life as a flash-only storage provider and entered the rack-scale flash market in 2016 with its FlashBlade product.
#DSSD, in comparison, was acquired by EMC Corp. in 2014 for its rack-scale technology. In 2016, the newly merged @Dell EMC launched DSSD D5, a #rackscale #flash appliance based on the acquired technology. The company cancelled the line in March 2017, stating it made more sense to embed the technology into existing storage arrays.
Benefits/drawbacks of rack-scale flash
#Rackscale #flash boosts the performance of any system, even more than #allflash arrays that don't connect via #lowlatency #NVMe protocols. All-flash array vendors claim IOPS ranging from 200,000 to the low millions. @Dell EMC, for example, claimed 10 million IOPS for its now cancelled #DSSD D5 product. While any application can benefit from that speed, it is a necessary feature for financial applications, big data technology such as #Hadoop, and #inmemory #database systems such as #SAP #HANA.

Samsung: NVMe benefits are available now, within limits
#NVMe can bring significant benefits in performance and power consumption today, but the new #flashstorage protocol is set for real take off in 2018.
Those are the views of the solid state drive product marketing executive for @SamsungSemiconductor Europe, Kristian Vättö, who told Computer Weekly NVMe will take off as a storage medium in enterprise arrays with the arrival of dual port drives, next generation central processing units (CPUs) and NVMe-over-fabrics (#NVMf ).
The key problem highlighted by Vättö is that currently NAS and SAN have to switch between different protocols when they access storage, transitioning between small computer system interface (SCSI) and Ethernet and Fibre Channel.
“Because they are engaged in protocol switching, latency is added,” said Vättö. “That wasn’t a problem with hard disk drives when their latency was higher than that of the network.”
NVMe is an emerging flash storage protocol that can potentially speed access times by orders of magnitude compared to the SCSI and SATA protocols designed for spinning disk, but still in use for many flash drives.
But, hardware makers need to eliminate SCSI from the input/output (I/O) path and a bottleneck in storage processing to allow NVMe off the leash.
According to Vättö, NVMe’s most successful early adopters are hyperscaleusers. These are the likes of Google, Facebook etc that design their own hardware and software for use in their datacentres and don’t use proprietary storage platforms.

Tegile set to compete with big six with cheaper arrays, says CEO
#Tegile ’s takeover by #WesternDigital will propel it to competition with the big six storage array makers, as well as bring economies of scale and see #NVMf and #3DXpoint products Tegile is looking forward to #NVMeoverfabrics, storage-class memory and cheaper storage arrays, according to Tegile CEO Rohit Kshetrapal. He believes the purchase of Tegile by Western Digital will bring investment for the all-flash/hybrid flash storage makers next stage of development, as well as put Western Digital on the same terrain as the big six storage makers.
“When Tegile becomes a Western Digital brand it will no longer be a smaller entity and will have access to global markets,” he said.
“It currently isn’t one of the bix six [storage suppliers], but has a definite strategy to go up into the software stack, becoming a vertically integrated company from memory chips to software platforms.”
Western Digital has primarily been a supplier of storage media, such as spinning disk and solid state, but already has its Active Archive object storage. “Tegile will be its performance array product,” said Kshetrapal.
He added that Tegile – which has around 1,750 customers and 3,200 arrays deployed – needs more capital for its next stage of expansion, and that its purchase by Western Digital will provide this.
Roadmap items include NVMe-over-fabrics – it has recently launched NVMe-equipped arrays – and so-called storage-class memory such as 3D Xpoint.
But what of the NVMe-controller bottleneck? While access to storage is potentially orders of magnitude quicker using NVMe, it currently cannot realise that potential in array format because the storage controller is a bottleneck.
Systems mooted centre on the aggregation of CPU resources from clustered or disaggregated controller functionality. “There are many paths in that development process, but we will see products on a six- to nine-month horizon,” said Kshetrapal.
He believes being part of Western Digital would help bring array prices down for Tegile customers. “We will be able to make economies of scale as a result of being part of Western Digital, which will give us advantages over competitors. Arrays will not be as expensive to customers any more,” he added.

Remote SSDs in Micron's SolidScale storage system behave like local SSDs
#SSD s operate the fastest when inside a computer. #Micron s new #SolidScale storage system uproots SSDs from servers and pushes them into discrete boxes while reducing latency. SolidScale is a top-of-the-rack storage system that will house many SSDs. It will connect to servers, memory, and other computing resources in a data center via gigabit ethernet, and will use the emerging #NVMeoF (NVMe over Fabric) 1.0 protocol for data transfers.
The new storage system is faster than regular storage arrays, Micron claimed. SolidScale can deliver data more than two times faster than a standard all-flash array.

SolidScale is a step in decoupling SSDs from servers and putting them into shared storage in data centers. It also provides a power-efficient way of packing fast storage into tight spaces.
Micron's new storage technology is designed for data centers of the future, in which storage, networking, memory, and other resources will be decoupled and boxed together in discrete units. Ideas for similar designs are already floating around. Intel has open-sourced its Rack Scale Design, which has been adopted by major server vendors.
Such deployments are flexible for use with various workloads, including the cloud and databases, and can handle a variety of in-memory or storage driven applications. Pooled resources can also reduce electricity costs of data centers by more efficiently using cooling and other resources. Virtualization manages hardware use, and Micron is providing its own SolidScale middleware and management tools.
SolidScale fits into such software-defined storage environments and is highly scalable to meet various workloads. The storage system can be pooled across many connections and resources and can offload processing to CPUs on the edge. The storage array also gets direct access to server or pooled memory.
Deployments of SolidScale may start by the end of this year or in 2018, said Eric Endebrock, vice president for storage solutions marketing at Micron.
