AWS re:Invent 2017: How Netflix Tunes EC2

My last talk for 2017 was at @AWS re:Invent, on "How @Netflix Tunes @EC2 Instances for Performance," an updated version of my 2014 talk. There was so much demand for it this year that I had three overflow rooms streaming it, and people still couldn't get in. (I shouldn't let this go to my head, as there were 42,000 attendees at re:Invent looking for something to see!) Fortunately, it was videoed for those who missed it.

Larger AWS EC2 instance types seek to conquer enterprise demands

#Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud ( #EC2 ), one of #AWS ' oldest services and a bedrock of the platform, has seen a steady expansion of instance options for cloud customers since first introduced in 2009. And that pace has quickened as the cloud giant tries to fill gaps in its lineup. In the past 12 months, AWS has added nearly 30 new EC2 instance types -- a third of its total EC2 portfolio. Most of those VMs are slight tweaks to the amount of compute, storage, networking or memory within existing EC2 instance types, but they all follow a similar pattern -- they're getting bigger. "The larger you can allocate a virtual device, the more enterprise apps you can capture, because a lot of these advanced applications end up on higher-end proprietary compute because they need it," said Jeff Kato, an analyst with the Taneja Group in Hopkinton, Mass.

Amazon Web Services cuts EC2 prices once again, as much as 21 percent in some cases

It’s once again cheaper to use #AmazonWebServices. The leading cloud computing company announced price cuts Wednesday across the services it provides through its #ElasticCompute Cloud.This is the 61st time AWS has cut prices on its services, the company said in a blog post. AWS price cuts seemed to arrive monthly at one point a few years ago, and while the pace of those cuts has slowed down a bit, the overall trend continues as AWS usage grows and it exacts pricing power on its suppliers.

Depending on what type of instance you wish to purchase, and the region in which you prefer to run your workloads, the cuts range between five percent and 21 percent. More details are available here.

As overall usage of AWS increase, the company is able to cut prices at a fairly steady clip. It most recently cut prices in November, and the cuts don’t seem to have affected the division’s bottom line: AWS operating income has increased sharply year-over-year during the last two quarters.

Amazon Web Services Embraces Container Networking

AUSTIN, Texas — #Amazon Web Services ( #AWS ) is gearing up to deploy embedded support for #containernetworking directly within its #EC2 Container Service ( #ECS ). Today, Amazon ECS relies on the same software-defined network ( #SDN ) that AWS employs for all its cloud services. To make it possible to deploy both stateless and stateful applications at scale using Amazon ECS, AWS has developed an implementation of its networking software that can now be directly attached to any container.
