Google Joins New SDN/NFV Open Source Networking Project

Open source groups focusing on software-defined networking ( #SDN ) and network functions virtualization ( #NFV ) have formed a new project, attracting new partners such as #Google, #Radisys and #Samsung. The project is called #CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Data Center), formed by Open Networking Lab (ON.Lab) and The #LinuxFoundation, who are building out the fledgling CORD initiative -- conceived to bring "datacenter economics and cloud flexibility to the telco central office and to the entire access network" -- into a separate open source project with independent governance, partners, collaborators and contributors. The CORD Web site says: "CORD lets the operator manage their central offices using declarative modeling languages for agile, real-time configuration of new customer services. Major service providers like #AT&T, #SKTelecom, #Verizon, #ChinaUnicom and #NTTCommunications are already supporting CORD."

Dell could announce the sale of its IT services unit to Japan’s NTT for $3.5 billion as soon as Monday

Capping a process that began late last year, #Dell could announce as early as Monday the sale of the company’s IT services unit to Japan’s telecom conglomerate #NTT for $3.5 billion, sources briefed on the process tellRe/code.

Dell has been shopping the division — previously known as #PerotServices — since last fall as part of a wider effort toraise as much as $10 billion selling assets that aren’t a core part of its business.

The company wants to use those funds to help pay down part of the $50 billion in debt it will incur when it closes on its $67 billion acquisition of data storage company EMC, which would stand as the largest technology deal of all time if it goes through. The sale to NTT is seen as an important signal to the debt markets that Dell will be able to rapidly pay down that debt.

Dell is nearing a deal to sell its IT services business unit to the Japanese telecom giant NTT for about $3.5 billion.

#NTT executives are expected to formalize their offer in a meeting with #Dell CEO @MichaelDell in New York on Wednesday. If successful, the deal would close a process that began in December when privately held Dell set out to sell its services unit — made up primarily of the company formerly known as #PerotSystems, which Dell acquired in 2009 for $3.9 billion.

Dell is in the process of acquiring #EMC, the data storage equipment company, in a deal that when first announced in October was worth about $67 billion. Dell has proposed to pay for the deal by taking on more than $50 billion in debt.

The sale of the services unit is considered part of an effort to raise cash that will ultimately help pay that debt down. Other assets, including some software operations like #Quest and #SonicWall, are said to be still in play. Dell hopes to raise as much as $10 billion from asset sales.
