VMware NSX 6.4 introduces upgrade planner, HTML5 features

@VMware #NSX 6.4 adds a range of features and improvements that VMware administrators should examine and implement,  including an upgrade planner and more powerful firewall functionality. VMware NSX 6.4 improves firewall functionality by inspecting traffic at Layer 7. Previously, admins could configure rules to block Secure Shell (SSH) on TCP port 22, for example. So when a VM owner configures SSH on port 80, and firewall rules allow traffic for TCP port 80, access to SSH is still possible because only port 22 is blocked. The new deep packet inspection functionality in VMware NSX 6.4 enables the distributed firewall to look inside the actual packets to identify the applications. Using the previous example, admins can block SSH traffic regardless of the port. Such functionality was previously only available with third-party products from companies such as Palo Alto Networks or Check Point Software. This new functionality doesn't eliminate the need for such products because they still offer features such as intrusion and malware detection. For example, the distributed firewall may let HTTP traffic through even if the URL contains SQL injection code, something that other firewalls would be able to detect and block. Be aware of new service specifications with the APP_ prefix when using this new functionality to create a firewall rule. VMware's online documentation provides an overview of the current VMware NSX 6.4 release's supported applications. This all works because of a new component on the ESXi host for the context-aware firewall that works with the distributed firewall. It keeps track of each traffic flow from a virtual network interface card (vNIC) and evaluates the firewall rules for that flow.

Cisco mocks 'scorned ex-lover' HPE at Partner Connection Week, while going after Palo Alto Networks and Nutanix

@Cisco opened its Partner Connection Week in the Bahamas by swiping at three of its competitors and announcing promotions for partners to go after the trio's market share. The networking giant announced offers for the channel to compete with @PaloAlto Networks and @Nutanix, and also took a dig at @Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) for its supply chain issues.  byproducts' -  @Cisco mocks 'scorned ex-lover' @Hewlett PE at #PartnerConnectionWeek, while going after @PaloAlto Networks and @Nutanix @Gartner flags #publiccloud giants' 'unchecked influence' In his keynote, Cisco VP Nirav Sheth mocked HPE for attributing $93m of losses to Hurricane Harvey's impact last year, after the natural disaster struck a manufacturing facility in Houston. Sheth said that, using its own multi-cloud infrastructure, Cisco was able to mitigate the effect of Hurricane Harvey by rerouting its supply chain to other facilities around the world - something he claimed HPE failed to do. "From a business perspective we had a major datacentre manufacturing facility right there in Houston and we were really concerned with what was happening and that we'd have to shut down," he said. "That would disrupt our ability to serve customers and ultimately disrupt our revenue. "But because of the secure intelligent platform for digital business that we had invested in we had the right supplier collaboration capabilities and the right SAP Hana capability running on a multi-cloud architecture in instances around the world. We were able to quickly flip the switch and reroute our supply chain and recover that supply capacity at other sites around the world, and our customer deliveries were not disrupted. "Well our good friends down the street in Cupertino - maybe not good friends, maybe a scorned ex-lover - HPE were manufacturing in the same facility and guess what they had to report on their quarterly earnings?" he said. "£93m of a loss attributed to supply chain disruptions because of Hurricane Harvey." Sheth then asked the audience of partners to raise their hands if they are "proudly selling HPE", only to be met with laughter as nobody obliged. "The reason I'm saying this is because you should sell them Cisco multi cloud - and you can use the HPE compete promo as you sell into HPE, how about that?" he quipped. Later on in his keynote Sheth took a dig at the "one-trick ponies" that Cisco is competing with across a range of technologies, before announcing a series of "competitive promotions" to target two specific vendors. "I really like our strategy because when I look around the industry everybody else that we're having to compete against are one-trick ponies," he said. "One of my favourite one-trick ponies is Palo Alto Networks." To target Palo Alto these promos will be for next-generation firewalls and email security, while Nutanix will be targeted with a hyper-convergence offer. Sheth did not go into the specifics of the offerings - only to say that they will be available in Cisco's Q4 and will "bring [partners'] pricing to where it needs to be

Cisco Has A Pile Of Cash To Spend, But Is Rival Arista Too Big To Buy?

@CiscoSystems ( #CSCO) could aim for a big acquisition in the wake of its plans to bring back some $67 billion in overseas cash, but will it have enough to truly shake up the networking sector?    With Cisco's stock also trading at a 17-year high, the computer networking giant could use a combination of equity and cash to finance a big deal. Cisco stock jumped 4.7% to close at 44.08 on the stock market today after reporting fiscal second-quarter earnings and revenue that topped expectations on Wednesday. Archrival @AristaNetworks ( #ANET) has a market valuation of $22 billion. That high market cap, coupled with a deal premium and the fact @Cisco has earmarked $25 billion for share repurchases, could put @Arista out of reach, analysts say. Arista, which reports fourth-quarter earnings late Thursday, has been grabbing share in the data center switching market from Cisco. Other names that some analysts throw out as acquisition targets include software firms @ServiceNow (NOW), @Splunk (SPLK) and privately-held Slack; data center firms @Nutanix (NTNX) and @Pure Storage (PSTG);  as well as cyber-security technology providers like @Palo Alto Networks (PANW)

Why HPE Might Want to Move on Gigamon

#Gigamon (GIMO) could sooner or later sell itself to the highest bidder. According to a Reuters report, Gigamon hired Goldman Sachs (GS) to help it explore a sale. Shortly after the report, Needham analysts raised their price target on Gigamon to $50 from $34, saying that the odds that Gigamon could be acquired had significantly increased. Needham went further to list possible buyers of Gigamon like #Cisco (CSCO), Hewlett Packard Enterprise ( #HPE ), #PaloAlto Networks (PANW), and #Fortinet (FTNT) on that list.

One common thing about these companies mentioned in relation to the Gigamon acquisition is that they are interested in cybersecurity. They are betting on security to add appeal to their core products. Thus, they could benefit from Gigamon’s network monitoring and security technology.

Strategic fit for HP Enterprise

Of these potential buyers of Gigamon, HP Enterprise could be the hungriest. The company is not only busy hunting for strategic tools that could boost demand for its core server and storage products, but its CEO Meg Whitman has also recently talked about acquisition becoming a bigger part of its strategy.

Therefore, #Gigamon, with its traffic monitoring and security software, could be a strategic fit for #HPE as it seeks to transform its fortunes. The above chart shows how #HP Enterprise’s top line has compared with consensus estimates in the last few quarters.

Need for tuck-in acquisitions after pruning season

#HPE has eliminated several units since it separated from its computer and printer sibling HPE Inc. (HPQ). The pruning hasn’t just unlocked funds for reinvestment, but it has also created room for tuck-in acquisitions to help push back against rivals such as #DellTechnologies (DVMT) and #Amazon (AMZN).

Partners To Juniper Networks: Dump Security, Focus Reorganization Around SDN

As #Juniper Networks undergoes a reorganization, which includes some layoffs, partners are asking the vendor to leave behind its "failing" security business and refocus innovation on its bread-and-butter networking and its software-defined networking ( #SDN ) portfolio. "Customers have moved away from looking at Juniper as a serious security contender with the others that are out there – like #PaloAlto Networks and #Fortinet," said one CEO from a solution provider who partners with Juniper and declined to be named. "They need to seriously consider what they should do with their security piece, but I think they should focus their effort on switching and routing and building software around that to enhance those technologies." Several partners said their overall Juniper business declined around 10 to 15 percent in 2016 year over year in part due to a lack of security sales.

Palo Alto Networks Thinks It Can Grow Just Fine Without Acquisitions

#PaloAltoNetworks hasn’t relied on acquisitions to keep up its high rate of growth, and the security vendor doesn’t seem interested in changing that strategy. At a technology conference hosted by investment bank Dougherty & Co. last week, Rene Bonvanie, Palo Alto’s chief marketing officer, expressed “more of an appetite for technologies or teams that can help their platform,” rather than for product lines that could deliver quick revenue growth,” Dougherty analyst Catharine Trebnick wrote in a security note issued yesterday. #SDN

Software Is Eating The Network, Through SDNO

Back in 2011, Marc Andressen famously made the statement “software is eating the world.” The network is now on software’s plate. We are seeing software-defined networking and software-defined storage starting to come into the mainstream, joining software-defined servers—or what has traditionally been called “virtualization.” As infrastructure starts to become more amorphous as to virtualized software layers to help drive agility, managing all of the devices underneath becomes even more difficult. Networking companies like #A10, #Arista Networks, #Cisco Systems, #Fortinet, #Juniper Networks and #PaloAlto Networks are bringing network devices to the market, but they need to be managed, and administrators just want to pull it all together easily, preferably with a single tool.
