Meg Whitman names HPE president, puts him in charge of streamlining businesses
Antonio Neri has been named #HewlettPackardEnterprise 's first president and CEO Meg Whitman has given him the task of streamlining its businesses. Neri, 49, was previously executive vice president and general manager of HPE's Enterprise Group, which includes servers, storage, networking, technology services, converged data center infrastructure, telecommunications and cloud solutions.
It is the latest in Whitman's efforts to reinvent what used to be Hewlett-Packard, an effort she began in 2015 by splitting the tech giant into HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) for PCs and printers and HPE (NYSE:HPE) for everything else.
She spun off HPE's enterprise services business in a merger with Computer Sciences Corp. in April, creating DXC Technology (NYSE:DXC).
Whitman has also added some enterprise software businesses through the acquisitions of Aruba, Niara, Simplivity, SGI and Nimble Storage.
But this hasn't produced the growth that HPE will need to grow and survive long-term. In the first half of its fiscal year that ended in April, the company said that its revenue from continuing business had shrunk by 11.5 percent to $15 billion and operating profit fell by 19 percent to $1.76 billion.
The company plans to cuts its costs by between $200 million to $300 million by November in moves that will include reducing discretionary expenses such as employee travel and cutting both contract workers and permanent staff.
Antonio is a veteran technology executive who has led some of the most important businesses and initiatives at HP during his 22 years with the company," Whitman said in the announcement of Neri's promotion, calling his work "invaluable to me as we have worked to establish the new Hewlett Packard Enterprise."
Before HP was split in two, Neri was senior vice president and GM for HP Servers and HP Networking. Prior to that, he led the HP Technology Services business unit which provided support and consulting services. He joined HP in 1995 as a customer service engineer in its Europe, Middle East and Asia call center.
Neri got a computer engineering degree from Universidad Tecnológica Nacional in Argentina and is a also a professor of arts and drawing.

HPE hatches HPE Next – a radical overhaul plan so it won't be HPE Last
#HewlettPackardEnterprise has hatched a radical plan to overhaul processes, investments, people and overheads in a project that is “likely to determine” its “relevance in the years ahead.” #HPENext is an initiative which will sit under the control of Jon Faust – senior veep of finance, worldwide financial planning and analysis, and global functions – CEO Meg Whitman confirmed in a memo to staff, seen by El Reg. “The goal of HPE Next is to produce an organization that is precisely built to compete and win in the marketplace. Through HPE Next we will clean-sheet our operating model and organizational structure to simplify and improve how we work,” said Whitman. “We’re going to review all of the processes of the company, as well as the accountabilities, to see where we can be more agile. We will look at how we can prioritize investments in growth areas and capabilities that set us up for the future. “And finally, we’re going to right-size end-to-end cost structures of HPE to ensure we deliver on our financial architecture,” the CEO added. The ultimate aim is to produce a “long-term operating and financial blueprint,” Whitman said. “It is a project on par in scope with any of the recent separations we’ve managed and is likely to determine HPE’s relevance in the years ahead.” Faust, who will lead the HPE Next Leadership Management Office, “brings a valuable perspective to this critical mission,” as he currently straddles the corporate and business groups and oversees finance for all global functions. The planning phase of the project is due to be done and dusted by the start of HPE’s new fiscal year on November 1. All this rather sounds like nothing is sacred at HPE in terms of internal infrastructure and policies – much as they haven’t been for the cloud giants like Amazon. A company that sells digital transformation is seemingly going to eat its own dog food. The chatter inside some corners of the company is that HPE is vulnerable to a takeover, given the size of its bottom line, but Whitman is doing the work that private equity houses would do if they took the business private. A walk down Memory Lane Whitman took over HP in 2011, inheriting a $100bn plus business that had lost its way. At first, she said the company would not be broken up, as her predecessor Leo Apotheker had advised during his time at the top. But that all changed in late 2015, with the PC and print divisions spun off to create HP Inc and the remainder rebranded as HPE. Not satisfied with that, Whitman then offloaded Enterprise Services in April this year and is still in the process of getting rid of the software business. HPE also made some buys of enterprise hardware firms along the way, including Aruba, SimpliVity, SGI and Nimble Storage. But sales and profit growth have still not materialized: in the first half of fiscal ’17 ended April 30, like-for-like revenue shrank 11.5 per cent year-on-year to $15bn and operating profit fell to $1.76bn, down nearly 19 per cent. Perhaps most worrying in the results was the 14 per cent dive in server sales, something that has cast doubt over HPE’s server cloud joint venture with Foxconn, though the company claimed its core server portfolio was stable. Operating margins in the server unit were down. After the results, HPE said on a conference call it was looking to save $200m to $300m in costs by November by cutting discretionary expenses including employee travel, and reducing contractors and axing permanent staffers

HPE's acquisitions won't have their own partner programmes
#HPE has confirmed it will merge its recent acquisitions' channel initiatives into its own Partner Ready Program on 1 November. Over the course of the past 12 months, #HPE bought up #Simplivity, #Nimble Storage, #SGI, #Cloud #Cruiser and #Niara, most of which conducted the majority of their business through the channel prior to acquisition. Speaking to reporters at the company's Global Partner Summit yesterday, Jesse Chavez, VP of worldwide channel strategy and operations, said 1 November is the landmark day when all partners from Nimble, Cloud Cruiser and Simplivity will be fully migrated to the HPE Partner Ready Program.

What to expect from HPE Discover 2017
The annual conference kicks off today Twelve months is a long time in tech, as #HPE has spent this last year demonstrating. Since the last Discover conference in Las Vegas, HPE has acquired #Nimble Storage, launched its own consultancy service – #Pointnext – bought #Simplivity and #SGI, and spun off its software business to #MicroFocus. And that's just the highlights. What, then, does this mean for Discover 2017? Well, I expect that Meg Whitman's keynote will be, once again, full of strategy and explanation of what these acquisitions and divestments mean. In particular, I think we're going to hear a lot about Pointnext and how it fits in with HPE's vision. There will undoubtedly be some product news too, but I imagine it will be to do with existing themes and lines, such as ProLiant and edge computing/IoT, particularly as there has already been a Simplivity product released since the acquisition (the HPE Simplivity 380 in March) and it's a probably a little early for any concrete product announcements emerging from the Nimble purchase, although you never know. There's been some news about The Machine recently – HPE's in-memory computing project – and I would be surprised if it isn't name checked, but any totally new revelations would be a surprise. In short, a sedate but interesting conference lies ahead, with Monday focussing exclusively on the channel (follow coverage from that on our sister site Channel Pro), while Tuesday and Wednesday broaden out into the conference proper.

HPE-SGI to Tackle Exascale and Enterprise Targets
At first blush, and maybe second blush too, Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s ( #HPE ) purchase of #SGI seems like an unambiguous win-win. SGI’s advanced shared memory technology, its popular UV product line ( #HANA ), deep vertical market expertise, and services-led go-to-market capability all give HPE a leg up in its drive to remake itself. Bear in mind HPE came into existence just a year ago with the split of Hewlett-Packard. The computer landscape, including HPC, is shifting with still unclear consequences. One wonders who’s next on the deal block following #Dell ’s recent merger with EMC. Few details of #HPE plans for SGI (product roadmap, etc.) are available. At SC16 HPE was busy getting at least one message out – it is delighted for the new resources and high-end HPC headroom provided by SGI. “It’s a strategic move on our part to bolster our position in the HPC market as well as in the big data and mission critical systems spaces. [SGI has] lots of technologies across high performance data analytics (HPDA) and real time transaction processing in addition to HPC especially at the very high-end,” said Vineeth Ram, VP, HPC, Big Data & IoT Segment, HPE Servers, during a briefing at SC. There’s still plenty to sort out. One issue that may prove troublesome is SGI’s preexisting reseller arrangements with Dell EMC, now a direct competitor, and Cisco, for the SGI’s UV Hanna machines. Some staff rightsizing may also be necessary. Yet on paper what’s most eye-catching is the deal’s complementary rather than overlapping quality.

Intel hatches architecture to make high performance computing an enterprise staple Dell is among the first enterprise vendors to launch systems based on Intel's Omni-Path Architecture.
#Intel and its server maker partners are betting that high performance computing can become an enterprise mainstay.
The chip giant added to its #ScalableSystemFramework and rolled out a new architecture call #Omni-Path to make high performance computing ( #HPC ) clusters available for more workloads.
#Dell announced new systems using the Intel architecture and approach to HPC on Monday. #Cray, #Fujitsu, #HPE, #Lenovo, #SGI, #PenguinComputing among others are planning to launch systems revolving around Intel's Omni-Path Architecture.
Intel said volume shipments are likely in the first quarter. Dell rolled out specialized HPC systems for #genomicdata analysis, manufacturing and research.
According to Intel, the popularity of big data and analytics workloads will take HPC mainstream. As a result, HPC techniques and fabric approaches will mean enterprises carve out HPC budgets. Intel calls this development an "HPC Everywhere" era.
