NEC launches SDN transport solution with Infinera and Juniper

#NEC and subsidiary #Netcracker Technology have partnered with Infinera and #Juniper Networks to launch a new transport software-defined networking ( #SDN ) solution. The solution aims to transform how networks are managed and controlled by combining #Infinera’ s expertise in network building, Juniper’s experience in IP/MPLS and physical/ virtual network functionality, and NEC/Netcracker’s multilayer control. The solution offers full visibility across all IP, optical and microwave domains, while offering the ability to optimise network utilisation and automated service provisioning, NEC claims. "Service providers need a master Transport SDN solution that optimizes network traffic and automates configuration to maximize performance across all transport layers," said Shigeru Okuya, Senior Vice President at NEC Corporation. "With the support of our partners, NEC and Netcracker ensure that our customers can leverage best-of-breed solutions with minimal risk to enable end-to-end network automation and control." The solution was deomnstated as part of the Optical Interworking Forum (OIF) Open Networking Foundation (ONF) Transport API project, which included lab tests across a number of carrier’s networks, including Verizon and Telefonica’s. "Juniper Networks is committed to improving network automation so our customers can respond to changing traffic patterns with speed and agility, while optimizing network utilization," said Brian Rosenberg, corporate VP of partners and alliances at Juniper Networks. "Infinera’s goal is to provide highly scalable, automated and open Intelligent Transport Network solutions for our customers as they address a new era of more dynamic and ever-greater bandwidth demand," added Serge Melle, VP of business development at Infinera

Hitachi, IBM to collaborate in mainframes in the cloud era

TOKYO -- #Hitachi will supply #IBM-made mainframe computers loaded with its own operating systems starting in fiscal 2018, beating a retreat from hardware development in the age of cloud servers. The arrangement was announced Tuesday. Hitachi will continue developing operating systems for mainframe machines. New products will offer improved compatibility with Hitachi's "internet of things" platform Lumada. Mainframes have been widely used across Japan's public and private sectors for in-house computer systems since they emerged in the 1950s. Japan was a particularly big market, with #Hitachi, #IBM, #NEC, #Fujitsu and others all competing for a piece of the pie at one point. But the tide turned in the 1990s, when computer servers loaded with #Windows and #Linux operating systems became widespread. Japan's mainframe shipments topped 1 trillion yen ($8.94 billion) in the mid-1990s, but slid to below 45 billion yen in fiscal 2015, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association. That changing market climate prompted Hitachi's eventual exit from hardware. At the same time, the company recognizes persistent demand among companies that value stable system operation and security. There is also promise for use in the internet of things, a business Hitachi sees as a growth field. The turning fortunes of IBM are symbolic of the technological shift. The company's sales fell for a 20th straight quarter in the January-March period of this year. The company was hit by the advent of servers and then by the spread of cloud servers. This is in stark contrast to Amazon.com's cloud business, which is the world's largest. The business logged $890 million in operating profit in the January-March period, accounting for 90% of the company's profit. In Japan, where cloud computing has not become as widespread, IT companies have been logging relatively solid earnings. Yet, Fujitsu, NEC and Hitachi all saw revenue in the IT segment decline in the year ended in March. Making it imperative for them to respond to the growth of cloud computing.

Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, and Nokia secure lion’s share of router and switch market

#Cisco is the most familiar company in the router and switch market with #Juniper and #Nokia trailing behind, according to a new piece of research from IHS Markit. IHS Markit conducted a switch and router vendor leadership survey in 2016 that shows how service providers select router and CES manufacturers, whose equipment they have installed, help them evaluate future purchases. The 15-page study features operator ratings of 11 vendors including, #Brocade, #Cisco, #Coriant, #ECI, #Ericsson, #Fujitsu, #Huawei, #Juniper, #NEC, #Nokia [including #AlcatelLucent ] and #ZTE on 9 criteria. The survey assesses service provider attitudes toward and perceptions of edge router, core router and CES manufacturers. In the study, Cisco was at the top of respondent edge/core router and CES manufacturer leadership scores. Along with Juniper, Huawei and Nokia (including Alcatel-Lucent), Cisco forms a top tier clearly separated by a wide margin from the other manufacturers. All these four manufacturers account for about 86% of worldwide revenue market share for routers and CES. Nokia topped among others, followed by Cisco and Juniper, when it came to product reliability and service and support. This was considered on an individual manufacturer selection criteria. For technology innovation and product roadmap, Cisco and Nokia ranked first and second, respectively. While for price-to-performance ratio, the Chinese vendors led with Huawei at number one position and ZTE at number two. Cisco, Juniper, Huawei and Nokia also led in other measures including unaided awareness, familiarity (or aided awareness), and equipment installed and under evaluation. Similarly, the vendors ranked at the top when survey respondents named leaders in next-gen routing technologies including 100GE, vRouter and IP DCI.
