REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jan. 30, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- According to a recently published report by Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, 400 Gbps is forecast to comprise 20 percent of data center switching revenue by 2020. Higher speeds – 100 Gbps, 200 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and 800 Gbps – are forecast to drive signification growth over the next five years. “In December 2017, Broadcom announced its Tomahawk 3 chip based on 56G SerDes, joining both Innovium and Nephos,” said Sameh Boujelbene, Senior Director at Dell’Oro Group. “We expect merchant silicon based on 56G SerDes to drive growth in 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps shipments, with 400 Gbps comprising majority of the volume. By 2020 to 2021, we expect another speed upgrade cycle driven by 112G SerDes, which will drive 800 Gbps port shipments – plus another wave of 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps shipments.” The Ethernet Switch – Data Center 5-Year Forecast Report answers questions like: How is the Ethernet speed upgrade cycle different in the Cloud vs. Enterprise segments? How is the network topology different in the Cloud vs. Enterprise segments? What are the use case deployments for 100 Gbps, 200 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and 800 Gbps and how does deployment vary depending on the SerDes lane driving the speed?

Demand for 100G and greater coherent wavelengths to drive optical transport market to $15B: Dell'Oro
The Dell'Oro Group stated in its recently released "Optical Transport 5-Year Forecast Report" that the total optical transport equipment market, including #WDM, #multiservice #multiplexers, and #opticalswitches, will reach $15 billion by 2021. WDM revenue alone is forecasted to reach $14 billion by 2021, driven by the growing demand for 100 Gbps-plus coherent wavelengths. "Demand for coherent wavelengths running at speeds of 100 Gbps and higher are expected to grow at a solid pace for the next five years," said Jimmy Yu, Dell'Oro group vice president. "Specifically, we predict a large ramp in demand for 200-Gbps coherent wavelengths, and forecast shipments of these line cards to grow at an 85% compounded annual growth rate." In May the Dell'Oro Group reported that WDM equipment sales should finish 2017 up 8% to reach $12 billion (see "WDM demand remains in growth mode in 2017: Dell'Oro"). According to the "Optical Transport 5-Year Forecast Report," demand for WDM metro equipment is expected to surpass that of DWDM long haul for the next five years. On an average annual basis, WDM metro revenue's growth rate will be nearly 3X higher than that of DWDM long-haul revenue's growth rate. Coherent wavelengths of 100 Gbps and higher will account for approximately 90% of the WDM equipment market revenue by 2021. Dell'Oro forecasts that enterprise direct purchasing for data center interconnect (DCI) should also influence the WDM market, and DCI using WDM equipment will be a $2.4 billion market by 2021. The Dell'Oro Group's "Optical Transport 5-Year Forecast Report" provides an overview of the optical transport industry with tables covering manufacturers' revenue, average selling prices, unit shipments, tributary/line or wavelength shipments (by speeds up to >100 Gbps). It also tracks DWDM long haul terrestrial, WDM metro, multiservice multiplexers, and optical switch equipment. For related articles, visit the Business Topic Center. Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, and Nokia secure lion’s share of router and switch market
#Cisco is the most familiar company in the router and switch market with #Juniper and #Nokia trailing behind, according to a new piece of research from IHS Markit. IHS Markit conducted a switch and router vendor leadership survey in 2016 that shows how service providers select router and CES manufacturers, whose equipment they have installed, help them evaluate future purchases. The 15-page study features operator ratings of 11 vendors including, #Brocade, #Cisco, #Coriant, #ECI, #Ericsson, #Fujitsu, #Huawei, #Juniper, #NEC, #Nokia [including #AlcatelLucent ] and #ZTE on 9 criteria. The survey assesses service provider attitudes toward and perceptions of edge router, core router and CES manufacturers. In the study, Cisco was at the top of respondent edge/core router and CES manufacturer leadership scores. Along with Juniper, Huawei and Nokia (including Alcatel-Lucent), Cisco forms a top tier clearly separated by a wide margin from the other manufacturers. All these four manufacturers account for about 86% of worldwide revenue market share for routers and CES. Nokia topped among others, followed by Cisco and Juniper, when it came to product reliability and service and support. This was considered on an individual manufacturer selection criteria. For technology innovation and product roadmap, Cisco and Nokia ranked first and second, respectively. While for price-to-performance ratio, the Chinese vendors led with Huawei at number one position and ZTE at number two. Cisco, Juniper, Huawei and Nokia also led in other measures including unaided awareness, familiarity (or aided awareness), and equipment installed and under evaluation. Similarly, the vendors ranked at the top when survey respondents named leaders in next-gen routing technologies including 100GE, vRouter and IP DCI.

Sales of 100GbE router ports to more than double by 2018: IHS Markit
Service providers responding to a network functions virtualization ( #NFV ) and packet-optical study expect to more than double their purchases of #100GBE Ethernet ports between 2016 and 2018, writes Michael Howard, senior research director and advisor, carrier networks, IHS Markit in an article the market research firm released today. Howard reports that survey respondents indicated that 16% of the 10/40/100GbE router ports fell in the 100GbE category. They expect that total will climb to 38% in 2018, according to Howard. Lowering technology costs will play a role; 88% to 96% of respondents expect 100GbE pricing to be "at parity" with 10GbE (so, 10 times 10GbE prices) this year. Meanwhile, packet-optical transport systems remain a major part of their plans. Howard reports that 70% of survey participants either have already deployed packet-optical transport systems or plan to do so by next year. This activity will lead the percentage of nodes in which operators will deploy packet-optical transport to grow six-fold in core/long-haul networks and almost double in access, aggregation, metro core, and regional networks between 2016 and 2018. Few operators who responded to the survey indicated they have respondents a current requirement for a multi-layer data/transport control plane. But other potential drivers of software-defined networking and network functions virtualization (SDN/NFV) are emerging. For example, 95% of respondent are using or plan to create smart central offices (COs) by deploying servers and storage to create mini data centers. Such smart COs not only will be used to offer cloud services, but as the NFV infrastructure on which to run virtual network functions (VNFs). And as the chart above illustrates, 70% of these operators plan to employ Central Office Re-architected as a Data Center (CORD; see "ON.Lab, The Linux Foundation establish CORD as formal project") principles in their smart COs. Thirty percent will do so by the end of this year, and the remaining 40% in 2018 or later. The 25-page 2016 routing, NFV, and packet-optical strategies survey is based on interviews with router/CES purchase decision-makers at 20 global service providers that control 36% of global telecom capex and a third of revenue, IHS Markit says. The survey covers plans for moving router functions from physical routers to software vRouters and VNFs; 100GbE adoption and use of IP over DWDM; router and CES protocols; planned uses of vRouters; plans to deploy packet-optical transport systems versus routers; and metro architectural changes and deployment of CORD in smart COs.

Fujitsu Successfully Demos Open ROADM Interoperability with AT&T ROADM
#Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and communications solutions, has successfully completed an Open #ROADM interoperability field trial on #ATT ’s network using the #Virtuora® multivendor #softwaredefinednetworking solution and #1FINITY™ #openhardware platform. The field trial marks an industry first in enabling multivendor interoperability for #opticaltransport carrying live customer traffic. The successful completion of this field trial brings AT&T one step closer to better meeting customers’ changing bandwidth needs and providing a more scalable, flexible network, as well as increasing efficiency, innovation and cost savings. The trial was an extension of the Open ROADM Multi-Source Agreement ( #MSA ), which defines interoperability specifications for Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs), including the ROADM switches, transponders and pluggable optics. The goal of the MSA is to move away from a traditionally closed ROADM optical transport network and toward a disaggregated open transport network, while allowing for centralized software control. The multivendor field trial consisted of a 100 Gbps optical wavelength in the Dallas metro area carrying live customer traffic. Fujitsu provided transponders and ROADMs from their 1FINITY open hardware platform (1FINITY T300, 1FINITY L100/L110) connecting to high capacity IP/MPLS routers. The 100G wavelength was provisioned using the Virtuora SDN Network Controller, which was integrated into the AT&T ECOMP architecture via REST APIs.
