Potential NVMe benefits spark enterprise IT interest
Enterprise IT pros who have seen the benefits of conventional flash storage are looking ahead to potential use cases for faster NVMe-based technologies.
IT pros accustomed to SAS- and SATA-based flash storage performance are eagerly anticipating the latest NVMe technologies. Some are already using nonvolatile memory express for demanding applications, while others wait for vendor support.
NVMe-based solid-state drives (SSDs) can lower latency and boost performance, compared with the standard SAS- and SATA-based SSDs that are the norm in most IT organizations. NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) can extend the NVMe benefits across a network, between application servers and storage arrays.
Although these are early days for NVMe, some enterprises already made the jump for select application workloads that have especially high I/O requirements. Market statistics indicate those users are in the distinct minority, but adoption should start to increase as storage vendors ramp up support and enterprise NVMe-based PCI Express SSDs drop in price.

NVMe benefits for database response time
Baystate Health took the leap to NVMe-based SSDs last year to try to boost database response time. The healthcare provider, based in Springfield, Mass., uses VMware's vSAN hyper-converged infrastructure on Cisco Unified Computing System server hardware across three data centers in about a 10-mile radius.
"It's not like we want to do cool, fancy things," said Raj Subramanian, director of IT infrastructure and technology at Baystate Health. He said NVMe had become "necessary for the response time."
Subramanian said Baystate's InterSystems Caché database, in particular, requires low response time to prevent corruption and performance issues.
"Overall, NVMe improved the cache performance," Subramanian said, "but it still hasn't been determined if the performance is good enough for Caché's IOPS requirements."
Financial institutions tend to be early adopters of any new technologies that can boost performance. One technical director in infrastructure architecture said his financial services firm used Fusion-io's PCIe-based SSDs before shifting to standard NVMe-based PCIe SSDs as soon as the drives became available.
"It's definitely significantly faster. And the pricing has come down on the NVMe drives, so it's actually pretty competitive, especially in comparison to a SAS flash drive," said the technical director, who asked that neither his name nor company be identified.
The financial services firm bought @Samsung #NVMe-based PCIe SSDs for its #Aerospike in-memory #NoSQL #database running on @DellEMC #servers, with plans to explore storage-class memory for its trading systems and in-memory databases. The technical director said the firm's other databases use conventional disk- and flash-based SAN storage, and the company's virtual servers connect to @Pure Storage and Dell EMC #XtremIO #allflash arrays.

Software-Defined Storage Offers Agencies Flexibility, Security and Savings
State and local governments face relentless pressure to store and manage a rapidly increasing amount of digital information, fueled by the push to digitize decades of paper records, new encryption mandates, closed-circuit video, data analytics and more. With their data approaching petabyte proportions, IT departments now look beyond hardware solutions, often to technologies loosely categorized as software-defined storage (SDS). Some SDS products are key components of software-defined infrastructure solutions that offer converged compute and storage services (hyperconvergence), while others use software to pool and manage existing storage resources, says Julia Palmer, research director with Gartner. As part of the trend to deliver infrastructure resources as services, all SDS products help to increase flexibility and reduce the management burden on IT departments. “With the pressure on growing data volumes, we have no choice but to improve agility and break down silos in storage components and in the infrastructure as a whole,” Palmer says. “Software is the only way that’s going to be achieved, which is why we’re seeing more and more use of various SDS strategies.” Mohave County Moves Beyond Migration Efficiency Mohave County, in northwest Arizona, simplified the management and administration of its storage area network (SAN) hardware environment four years ago by implementing SDS with the DataCore SANsymphony-V storage services platform. The initial driver of the county’s SANsymphony deployment was to reduce the downtime involved in migrating data from one physical storage appliance to another, says Nathan McDaniel, the county’s IT director. “We needed DataCore because hardware storage solutions don’t play well together,” McDaniel says. “Once you choose a hardware platform, you’re essentially locked into that environment. But with SANsymphony in front acting as the controller of your physical storage, there is almost no migration downtime, and we can use any hardware we want.” Regardless of the hardware, McDaniel says, SANsymphony-V provides central management along with features that include snapshots and backups, thin provisioning, continuous data protection, auto-tiering, deduplication and compression, analysis and reporting, as well as integration with cloud storage solutions. “We save a lot in hardware costs because we now buy very simplistic physical storage — essentially just RAID — and DataCore does the rest,” he says. Support and maintenance costs for SANsymphony are low, yielding more savings for the county, he adds. The success of the SDS deployment pushed Mohave County toward a highly virtualized data center, as the county has adopted VMware for most of its other services and the IT team eyes the possibility of a hyperconverged infrastructure, McDaniel explains. “Our experience with DataCore has been amazing, and we’ve gone on to build a highly advanced data center,” he says. Santa Clara County Taps Dell to Deal with a Data Tsunami Typically, data storage needs in Santa Clara County, Calif., increase 15 to 20 percent annually, says Ljubisa Matavulj, the county’s enterprise infrastructure manager. Beyond initiatives to go paperless, other efforts — for example, new encryption mandates, the county’s plunge into data analytics, and a stepped-up disaster recovery program — add to the data tidal wave. To meet the challenge, the county deploys #VMware and its #DellEMC storage hardware.
“We have a storage profile, and when we generate data, VMware uses that profile to assign the data based on how we will use it,” says Matavulj. “If we need capacity, VMware will send the data to one store; if we need performance, the software will sent it to another.”
Santa Clara County’s #VMware platform meshes with storage hardware arrays through #EMC Virtual Storage Integrator. VMware provides unified, policy-based management for storage provisioning. Together with EMC #VNX and #XtremIO fully automated storage tiering, deduplication and compression capabilities, it makes storage more efficient and easier to manage, Matavulj says. The county hasn’t adopted an additional virtualization layer largely because it has standardized on EMC hardware, eliminating many of the integration issues found in more heterogeneous environments, he says.
“We studied it and found that virtualization’s costs exceed its benefits for our environment,” Matavulj says.
Performance is the most pressing storage issue, increasing the need for software-based solutions to automate functions and make them more agile and efficient, Matavulj adds.
Demand for storage capacity is not abating, however, as programs such as video surveillance and body-worn cameras for law enforcement create new data streams. The cloud can provide scalability, especially for static and archival data, but that option will require a major investment in the county’s networks and in SDS with auto-tiering and cloud integration, Matavulj says.
“You can’t just magically move to the cloud,” he says. “You need the bandwidth to move lots of data and the software to automate the process.”
With its existing SAN hardware reaching the end of its life, officials in Mecklenburg County, N.C., plan to escape from their reliance on dedicated storage hardware altogether, Technical Services Director Clifford Dupuy says.
Mecklenburg County Finds Hope in Hyperconvergence
“We want to be out of mechanical drive storage and into a hyperconverged infrastructure that includes storage,” Dupuy says.
Mecklenburg County will deploy #DellEMC ’s #VxRail #hyperconverged appliance, which combines compute, networking and virtualization resources along with #VMware #vSAN storage software. The county already uses #Microsoft #Azure’s #StorSimple 8000, a policy-based tiered solution that sends archival or infrequently used data to the Azure cloud.
The county’s initial investment in VxRail roughly equals the annual support and maintenance fees for the aging SAN, and its maintenance costs represent a fraction of that incurred by the old storage environment, Dupuy says. Yet, the promise of increased agility and security for storage resources impresses county teams at least as much as the cost savings.
“It’s a win for us in IT and a fiscal win for the county’s citizens,” Dupuy says. “They’re going to save money, and their data is going to be more secure in a system that’s more robust and dynamic.”

Dell EMC Launches All-Flash Storage Barrage
#DellEMC World is continuing the decade-plus tradition set by EMC World to be a platform for showcasing the future of storage technology. And for Dell EMC, which after its historic merger became the world's largest storage vendor, the future of storage is anchored on software capabilities and the hybrid cloud. To maintain Dell EMC's No. 1 position in storage, the company has continued to innovate its storage technology, said Sam Grocott, senior vice president of marketing for storage and data protection. "Whether it's across the core tenets of the modern data center, scale-out, software-defined storage, next-generation flash technologies and converged offerings, we continue to demonstrate rapid innovation that is meeting our customers' ever-evolving needs," Grocott told CRN. "It's been full speed ahead on innovation." Dell EMC makes a strong case about the importance of on-premise and hybrid cloud infrastructures, said Jamie Shepard, senior vice president for health care and strategy at Lumenate, a Dallas-based solution provider and longtime Dell EMC partner. "Dell EMC is creating better performance and management of on-premise storage," Shepard told CRN. "They're putting a damper on the public cloud for primary storage, and are showing how to better leverage hybrid clouds." Grocott said that nearly every Dell EMC storage product is being refreshed with new hardware and software. At the high end, Dell EMC is introducing the #VMAX 950F, the new ‑ flagship of its all flash enterprise storage array family. New is a 68 percent increase in the performance as measured by IOs per second, as well as a 30 percent increase in response time. Dell EMC is also debuting its second-generation #XtremIO high-end all-flash block storage platform. #XtremIOX2 offers a 25 percent increase in the data reduction capabilities, and supports scale-up in addition to scale-out to let customers add additional storage densities to previously deployed nodes while cutting total cost of ownership by half on a per-gigabyte basis, Grocott said. Also refreshed is the Unity all-flash midrange array line with four models that take advantage of new CPU and memory capabilities. They offer 16 times the storage density and a 30 percent performance improvement over the current generation, and they can handle a maximum file size of 256 TB compared with the current 64 TB. Installation takes less than 10 minutes, Grocott said. Dell EMC also introduced the latest iteration of its SC #Compellent midrange storage arrays. The SC5020 has double the capacity of previous models, and offers 45 percent more IOs per second performance. It is the first in the SC family to support a wide range of Dell EMC enterprise storage software including PowerPath automated data path management and load-balancing software, ViPR storage automation software, RecoverPoint disaster recovery software, and Connectrix storage networking, Grocott said. On the unstructured data side, Dell EMC is introducing a new architecture called Infinity to its Isilon storage line, which offers a 6X improvement in IOs per second performance and an 11X improvement in throughput. The new Infinity architecture brings Isilon its first modular scale-out storage system that includes separate compute and storage nodes to allow compute and storage to scale independently of each other within a single chassis. The company is also introducing the first all-flash Isilon offering. In addition, Dell EMC is unveiling two major new data protection products at Dell EMC World, said Beth Phalen, president of the Dell EMC Data Protection division. "We're moving more towards turnkey solutions that are easier to deploy and that deliver a comprehensive set of features in one package," Phalen told CRN. The first is the Integrated Data Protection Appliance that combines the company's #DataDomain backup appliance with its Data Protection Suite software. "It will allow customers to go from install to backup in less than three hours, which is a significant improvement from what they need to do when they buy traditional backup and recovery from any vendor today," she said. The second is a move to more closely tie the Data Domain appliances to the cloud with new capabilities, including the ability to back up data from workloads in #Microsoft #Azure and #AmazonWebServices clouds to Data Domain and to replicate data between on-premise Data Domain appliances and cloud-based DDVE, or Data Domain Virtual Edition, Phalen said. DDVE, which was released last year, currently runs in on-premise cloud environments, but some time in the second quarter will also run on Azure and #AWS clouds. DDVE eventually will be able to run in any cloud environment, she said.

Dell EMC World 2017: Flash, HCI and cloud take center stage
If you think #DellEMC will condense any of its overlapping storage products at Dell EMC World 2017, think again. There has been a great amount of speculation about which storage arrays might be dropped since Dell said it would pay more than $60 billion to acquire EMC in late 2015. The merger created overlap throughout Dell EMC's combined traditional storage products, especially in midrange arrays.
Michael Dell spent a lot of time in the run-up to closing the deal assuring Dell's #Compellent customers their platform would survive the merger. That will remain true through next week, when the vendor makes a crush of product releases at Dell EMC World 2017, which begins May 8.
Dell EMC is looking to pivot toward newer technologies such as flash, #hyperconverged and cloud as sales of traditional disk-based arrays slip. Even with all this change, Dell EMC will hold on to its major array platforms. The traditional array families such as EMC #VMAX, #Unity and Dell SC (formerly Compellent) will survive but are considerably flashier. In many cases, they are flash-only, as is Dell EMC #XtremIO, which has never been a hard disk drive system.
During an analyst day last month, Dell EMC president David Goulden said the vendor will eventually merge midrange arrays but will proceed at a slow pace. For now, the Unity platform from EMC and Compellent SC platform from Dell will continue.
There will be a combined midrange family, but we don't have to rush into that because we have two very important families," Goulden said of the Unity and SC platforms. "We have been making moves to pull the storage portfolio together."
The vendor will instead focus on integrating flash throughout its storage lines at Dell EMC World 2017 and beyond. Its recent decision to discontinue its #DSSD high-end NVM Express-based shared storage box was a step in that direction. Instead of selling a DSSD product that appealed to a limited customer base, Dell EMC will incorporate that technology into other products.
"We're making that a feature of storage products rather than its own thing," Goulden said at analyst day. "We're focusing high-end storage products according to where their respective strengths are, as opposed to a broad overlap.
"You'll see us announce a lot of new storage capabilities at Dell EMC World," Goulden continued. "We recognize the storage market is in consolidation mode and the market is basically flat, but there are some great pockets of growth. There are a lot of things happening in the storage business. We're seeing hypergrowth in all-flash, we're seeing hypergrowth in converged infrastructure and we're seeing declines in traditional markets."
Dell EMC has the technology pieces for this changing world. It has more all-flash array platforms than any of its competitors. Its #Vblock #convergedinfrastructure (CI) partnership with #Cisco still is the market leader in CI revenue, although the emphasis may shift to using Dell servers instead of Cisco in converged packages. Dell sells #VMware #vSAN software that powers #hyperconvergence and Dell EMC #VxRail vSAN-based hyper-converged appliances. It also has a raft of cloud technologies.

Dell EMC Pushing Ahead With Overlapping Midrange Storage Lines, Offers Capacity Guarantee
#DELLEMC is doubling down on its decision to maintain two of its only demonstrably overlapping product lines, arguing its legacy #Dell SC #Compellent series and #EMC 's #Unity midrange storage lines are thriving side-by-side rather than cannibalizing each other. "We are fully committed to our entire midrange product family including Dell EMC Unity and the Dell EMC SC Series," Craig Bernero, Dell EMC senior vice president of product development, said in a recent blog. "Each product solves different customer problems and is suited for different environments."  Bernero notes that Dell EMC's midrange storage revenue grew 32.8 percent between the third quarter – the first period Dell and EMC lines were combined after the early September acquisition of EMC by Dell – and the fourth quarter, according to statistics from research firm IDC. Microsoft Surface Pro 4] Bernero also said internal Dell EMC numbers indicate the company booked double-digit quarter-over-quarter revenue increases in both SC and Unity and saw a "substantial increase" in total customers for both lines in the fourth quarter. However, IDC combined Dell and EMC's pre-acquisition numbers, and the resulting year-over-year comparison shows a more than 17 percent decline in fourth-quarter storage systems revenue to $2.1 billion from $2.6 billion a year prior. Dell EMC has a commanding market share position, finishing the fourth quarter with market share of slightly less than 33 percent compared with nearly 37 percent a year earlier, according to EMC. The more-is-better strategy fits with Dell EMC's commitment to openness and customer choice, but the company doesn't get especially specific when it comes to which customers and environments are better suited to SC Series or Unity storage solutions. The SC Series, Dell EMC says, is the value-priced line aimed at small and midsize businesses, especially when those businesses are already using Dell servers. Unity is being marketed to midsize customers as a general-purpose offering for block and file storage. SC comes in all-flash, disk only and hybrid configurations. Unity is available in configurations for all-flash, converged, hybrid and virtual deployments. Bernero said Dell EMC is launching a new program called the All-Flash Storage Efficiency Guarantee, which guarantees that XtremIO, VMAX All Flash, Unity and SC series all-flash configurations can get a logical storage capacity of at least four times the physical capacity of the drives in their new array, allowing them to cram more data into less space and less management. Michael Pearson, president of DSA Technologies, an Elk Grove, Calif., solution provider that works with Dell EMC, said the vendor's strategy around the SC series and Unity has been consistent and DSA sees distinct paths to selling each line. "We definitely see them as both being viable options in the enterprise space," Pearson said. "Dell EMC needs a competitive all-flash array to compete with both Nimble [Storage} and Pure [Storage], so they're hoping to have that with Unity. Compellent competes with the more traditional storage plays and does that very well."

Dell EMC Canning XtremeIO File Services Project
#DellEMC is halting development of file services on its #XtremIO all-flash block access array. According to Sam Grocott, SVP for product marketing in the Storage and Data Protection division, Dell’s customers said they didn’t need another system supplying file services from Dell EMC, as they were already well served with file services on the #VMAX, #Unity and #Isilon arrays. In line with Dell’s focus on simplification the company is therefore stopping XtremIO file services development and moving a large chunk of the #FluidFS team from XtremIO to the mid-range storage team. There will be some layoffs. The XtremIO array developers will focus on its primary uses cases of VDI, VSI and test/dev where its storage efficiency technologies such as deduplication and copy data management are important. Grocott said there will be exciting news about XtremIO developments at Dell EMC World in Las Vegas next month, and the roadmap is solid

Dell kills off standalone DSSD D5, scatters remains into other gear
A year after first shipping the #DSSD D5 array, #DellTechnologies is axing the standalone product. It will sprinkle the technology into its storage and platforms groups; that will, it is hoped, speed up applications on these systems by exploiting high-speed access to NVMe drives. #EMC bought DSSD in May 2014 for a suggested $1bn. Now Dell owns EMC. Now the DSSD D5 product line is being dismantled and scattered into other gear. Sam Grocott, Dell’s senior veep of marketing for storage and data protection, confirmed the DSSD D5's fate to El Reg today. He added that 10 million IOPS D5, with 100 microsecond latency and 100GB/sec bandwidth from its NVMe drives and fabric, started shipping in February 2016 and went, broadly speaking, to two kinds of customers: enterprises needing high IOPS access to next-generation databases and HPC customers. These enterprise customers apparently told Dell that they loved the performance but wanted (needed) mainstream all-flash array data services, such as those we assume on #VMAX and #XtremIO products. The HPC customers said that mainstream all-flash arrays and bulk capacity storage met their requirements, so there was no general need for a separate D5-type product. So Dell has decided to make a strategic pivot with its DSSD technology, because it’s convinced fast network access to NVMe storage will be vital in the future. Consequently it is going to bring the DSSD technology to its storage and its platforms, with people in the present DSSD team moving either to Jeff Boudreau’s Storage business unit or to SVP for platform and systems engineering Bill DePatie’s organization. We understand long-time EMC staffer DePatie’s organization looks after platform hardware engineering, systems & software engineering, drive & storage media engineering, and platform and system strategy. Any DSSD people leaving EMC will be treated respectfully, according to Grocott. He was not able to say what proportion of the DSSD team might be leaving Dell. It is also too early to say which of Jeff Boudreau’s storage products will embrace DSSD technology first. Grocott did say a storage array product using NVMe would be launched by the end of the year. El Reg suggests you take your pick from XtremIO, #VMAX and Unity. For DSSD people it must be a blow, to put it mildly, to see their standalone and much cared-for product baby meeting an abrupt end-of-life. EMC has not been reluctant to kill off under-performing products in the past and its ability to act decisively and quickly in this regard deserves respect.
