EnterpriseDB's latest play to become a leading enterprise database vendor has seen the company reveal the EDB Postgres platform.
The open source vendor has chosen to embrace a wide ecosystem of vendors and technologies in order to show thatopen source is the way forward for enterprise databases.
Marc Linster, SVP products and services, EnterpriseDB, told CBR: "We are appealing to CIOs of larger enterprises who realise open source is here to stay and that open source databases are creating the next wave of innovation."
Conceptually the plan is integrate disparate tools under one umbrella, to make them much more integrated and easier to use. The company has tools that will let the platform integrate with other data platforms such as Hadoop.
The integration suite in the EDB Postgres platform includes tools that support the replication of data and the integration of other solutions such as MongoDB and Hadoop. The tools work so that data is not copied but just shows up as a table in the database.
This is achieved by using Data Adapters that use Foreign Data Wrapper technology, FDW's are a way of standardising access to remote objects this is meant to speed up the speed of accessing data from different systems.
Linster said: "Instead of saying all data has to live in the same infrastructure, we understand that sometimes data is better off sitting elsewhere."
