Light guides the gold nanoparticles growing position

A photochemical method using ultraviolet (UV) light is considered as an alternative fast and green method for preparing NPs when it reduces metal salts to #nanoparticles in the presence of a photoinitiator. A co-initiator connected on the carriers along with a type II photoinitiator in solution can reduce AuNPs only on the surface of the carriers under UV irradiation. It works with the type II photoinitiator abstracting a hydrogen from the co-initiator turning it into a real radical which reduces the metal salt.

The multidisciplinary team, which includes researchers from Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Changzhou Institute of Advanced Materials, investigated this photochemical method and the magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs). The researchers connect one kind of co-initiator (PEI) to Fe3O4 NPs and perform regional selective construction of nano-Au on magnetic nanoparticles by photoreduction with no free AuNPs found to be floating in the solution.

High catalytic performance

The prepared catalysts demonstrate high catalytic performance in the reduction of organic pollutants. Considering the adjustable wavelengths of the type II photoinitiator, this kind of photoreduction process is expected to be possible under visible light, such as sunlight making it practical for catalytic applications.
