Dell EMC Canning XtremeIO File Services Project

#DellEMC is halting development of file services on its #XtremIO all-flash block access array. According to Sam Grocott, SVP for product marketing in the Storage and Data Protection division, Dell’s customers said they didn’t need another system supplying file services from Dell EMC, as they were already well served with file services on the #VMAX, #Unity and #Isilon arrays. In line with Dell’s focus on simplification the company is therefore stopping XtremIO file services development and moving a large chunk of the #FluidFS team from XtremIO to the mid-range storage team. There will be some layoffs. The XtremIO array developers will focus on its primary uses cases of VDI, VSI and test/dev where its storage efficiency technologies such as deduplication and copy data management are important. Grocott said there will be exciting news about XtremIO developments at Dell EMC World in Las Vegas next month, and the roadmap is solid

AI Will Eclipse Hadoop, Says Forrester, So Cloudera Files For IPO As A Machine Learning Platform

When you start a revolution, you need to go public before the next revolution starts. #Hadoop used to be the “revolutionary” technology behind the “ #bigdata ” revolution but it has now been buried deep by #deeplearning, at least as far as the tech hype is concerned. One Hadoop distribution vendor, #Hortonworks , sensed the passing of the “revolution” baton early, and went public in 2014. “In a year or two we may look back at November 10, 2014 [the day it filed for IPO] as the beginning of the end of the Hadoop Bubble,” I wrote in The End of the Hadoop Bubble?

Hortonworks shares rose to $26, but on February 2015, I kept at it: “What if December 12, 2014, the day Hortonworks went public, surprising many by its swift action, the bubble ‘began to quiver and shake preparatory to its bursting’? What if Hortonworks had decided to rush to the exit while expectations were high?”

In its 2016 fiscal year, Hortonworks had revenues of $184.5 million, up 51% from the previous year, and a loss of $147.6 million, up from $133.3 million. Investors were not happy and Hortonworks shares continue to trade where they have been since early 2016, around $10. But hope is still alive, said the company, counting on a new revolution to carry it upwards: “Looking ahead at developments in the big data market, we believe that we can further leverage our existing R&D investments for utilization across other data-intensive technology trends like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning where excitement and interest has grown significantly.”

The VMware Perspective on Software-Defined Storage

Software defined datacentres ( #SDDC ) have shown the promise to change how we think about delivering IT services: from static, inflexible and inefficient –to dynamic, agile and optimized. For many, software–defined storage ( #SDS ) can be the most interesting component of the proposition: storage is responsible for the lion’s share of IT spend, growing constantly yet historically resistant to structural change. In this white paper, we present the core ideas behind software–defined storage, and introduce the #VMware model. We additionally take a look at key technology trends, and offer our perspective on likely adoption models, industry implications as well as customer impacts.

Scientists develop a cheaper and ultrafast alternative to flash memory

Engineering experts from the University of Exeter have developed smallest, highest-capacity memories for flexible and transparent electronic devices. They produced this innovative new memory using a hybrid of #grapheneoxide and #titaniumoxide that is low cost and eco-friendly to produce, are also perfectly suited for use in flexible electronic devices such as 'bendable' mobile phone, computer and television screens, and even 'intelligent' clothing. According to the results of their research published in scientific journal ACS Nano, these devices may also have the potential to offer a cheaper and more adaptable alternative to 'flash memory', which is currently used in many common devices such as memory cards, graphics cards and USB computer drives. The research team insists that these innovative new devices have the potential to take flexible electronics to a new age in terms of speed, efficiency and power. "Our hybrid graphene oxide-titanium oxide memory is just 50 nanometres long and eight nanometres thick and can be written to and read from in less than five nanoseconds -- with one nanometre being one billionth of a metre and one nanosecond a billionth of a second," said Professor David Wright, lead author of the paper. Professor Craciun, a co-author of the work, added that being able to improve data storage is the backbone of tomorrow's knowledge economy, as well as industry on a global scale.

VMware takes aim at enterprise hybrid cloud

#VMware is part of #DellTechnologies and is probably best known for its virtualisation technology -- but it also wants to be the platform for enterprises' #hybridcloud deployments, along with other areas such as mobile device management. ZDNet caught up with the company's CTO Ray O'Farrell to find out where its ambitions lie. What's the current state of play with VMware? People think of VMware as the virtualisation company, but in practice VMware has significantly expanded beyond that core x86, virtualisation story -- you will have seen it over the years with things like #SDDC and the software-defined internet. Right now, we have a focus on things like private cloud and the virtualisation of [core systems], including all those together with management and so on. We think we are putting together a large, private cloud story enabling you to set policy, security, and so on.

Intel Corporation’s Exciting Plan to Chop Up Future Chips

At #Intel 'sTechnology and Manufacturing Day, the company had executive Murthy Renduchintala -- the president of the company's Client and Internet of Things Group, as well as the head of the company's System Architecture group -- talking about Intel's chip-manufacturing technology from a product perspective. After all, Intel doesn't sell chip technology to its major customers today, though it certainly has ambitions to do so in the future. Instead, it sells finished products that it designs itself, using mostly its own manufacturing technology.

So, it's important to have a sense of not just what manufacturing technologies Intel has today and coming down the line, but also what the company plans to do with it to build salable, competitive products.

At the event, Renduchintala talked about Intel's plans to fundamentally change how it builds future processors for personal computers. Let's take a closer look.

Old versus new

Intel first talked about the "old" way it has designed chips, showing how the old methodology called for everything to be integrated into a single piece of silicon.

About the chip in this image, Renduchintala said that it's "pretty typical of what the industry has traditionally done."

"It's monolithic, where all the [intellectual properties] are constituted in the same process technology," the executive explained.

Renduchintala went on to say that the need to build these individual technologies in the same manufacturing technology, which has been necessary since they're all integrated into a single piece of silicon, is "constraining" to the company.

"Intel has a rich portfolio of [intellectual property] in an array of process nodes, all optimized to localized power, performance, and area, or PPA" he began. "And this presents an incredible opportunity for Intel in creating heterogeneous [systems-on-a-chip]."

What Renduchintala means is that instead of building a single piece of silicon that integrates all the key technologies, the company can build individual subsystems in different manufacturing technologies and stitch them together using a technology that it calls Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge.

Renduchintala said this new design methodology will have "a profound impact on how [Intel] will deliver products to the market now and in the future."

The executive explained how this new methodology allows Intel to "mix high-performance blocks of silicon and [intellectual property] together with low power elements made from different nodes for extreme optimization."

Some interesting possibilities

Intel didn't go into specific details about the future products that will be built using this heterogeneous design methodology, but if Intel can get it right. then it's not hard to imagine, and it's easy to get excited about the possibilities this new methodology opens up.

Today, Intel is quite limited in the number of unique chip variants it can build. Remember, not only does Intel work under the constraint that everything needs to be built using the same manufacturing technology, but it also has to deal with the reality that since everything is integrated into a single piece of silicon, it can only really afford to build a handful of chips that it needs to use to address a wide range of markets.

You might be surprised to learn that Intel's entire mainstream desktop processor family -- which includes countless variants at a very wide range of price points -- is made up of just two distinct silicon dies. Those same dies are also used for the company's high-performance notebook products.

Intel does a reasonable job of using those two chips to span such a large cross-section of the overall personal-computer market, but with a little imagination it's not hard to see how Intel could -- using this new product-development methodology -- broaden the range of products that it offers into these markets. Such a broadening of the portfolio would probably have a positive impact on both product margin and product mix: It's likely that the former would go up, and the latter would become richer.

Today, Intel's main offerings in what it calls the "enthusiast gaming" market are chips known as the Core i3 7350K, Core i5 7600K, and Core i7 7700K. The 7350K is simply a dual-core desktop chip that runs at a high frequency and can be adjusted by the user. The 7600K and 7700K are quad-core desktop chips that run at higher frequencies than their non-"enthusiast gaming" counterparts and, like the i3, have user-adjustable frequencies.

These chips do well for Intel, but there are some problems with them. Since they're based on the same silicon dies as the company's more mainstream desktop and notebook chips, they include integrated graphics processors that take up a significant portion of chip space.

Enthusiast gaming users aren't going to use those graphics processors, so Intel is in effect selling chips to users that are larger than they need to be, and thus more expensive to manufacture than they ought to be.

In an ideal world, Intel could sell chips without taking up all that space with graphics, lowering Intel's product costs and improving its margin. It could even boost its profits by offering chips that replace that wasted graphics silicon with more of the stuff that enthusiast gamers would be willing to pay for, such as more I/O, CPU cores, and cache memory.

The enthusiast gaming market isn't yet large enough to justify separate monolithic dies, so Intel simply repurposes or tweaks silicon dies that it uses for other, higher-volume segments, which means certain segments get suboptimal products because those chips were designed subject to too many constraints.

In a world where Intel can simply mix and match intellectual properties to build particular products, Intel could have the ability to remove the bits that enthusiast gamers aren't going to use or pay for -- i.e. the graphics block -- while building out products that include more of what those customers are willing to pay for, potentially driving up product mix.

Now, this is just one example, but the personal-computer market -- as Renduchintala pointed out at the company's investor meeting back in February -- isn't one-size-fits-all. There are lots of sub-categories of the market that may not have been worth doing specialized chips for under the old monolithic chip design methodology but that in this new world of heterogeneous chip design would be great candidates for specialized chips.

Such specialization could mean better products for Intel's customers and better cost structures for each product segment, which together could lead to a much more successful and profitable Intel.

Will Veeam complete a hat-trick of HPE acquisitions?

Hewlett Packard Enterprise ( #HPE ) is lining up its third major acquisition of the year, with backup and disaster recovery vendor #Veeam Software now on the tech giant’s radar. That’s according to sources close to The Register, which claims a move could be on the cards as HPE attempts to round off its buying blitz in 2017 by bolstering its backup capabilities. Should a deal go through however - for a speculated price of between US$1.5 billion - US$2 billion - Veeam would join #SimpliVity and #Nimble Storage in the HPE stable, following a busy three months of acquisition activity. After forking out US$650 million for privately held hyper-converged infrastructure provider, SimpliVity, in mid-January, the vendor followed up with a US$1 billion acquisition of Nimble Storage less than two months later, in an attempt to bulk up its storage offerings. For many, taking control of Veeam would provide the third and final piece of the puzzle for HPE, as it fights to maintain market relevance following the official creation of Dell Technologies in September 2016

Virtual PCIe Delivers a “Shift Left” in Software Defined Networking Emulation

This paper reviews both SW and UVM Vector Based Verification ( #VBV ) methodologies and Advanced Vector Based Verification ( #AVBV ) that uses Software Defined Networking ( #SDN ) HW to service PCIe transactions to the DUT. When deploying VBV methodologies, using the Veloce Transactor Library (VTL) family of components is most appropriate for UVM, C++ and SDK testbench methodologies. We explore how #VirtuaLAB PCIe and Ethernet Virtual Machines (VM) work together, how they compete for host resources and how VMs address the big device management channel requirements for HW and SW co-verification in Veloce emulation. We also discussed how VMs achieve greater functional coverage using a SDN SW High Availability (HA) test case example. Advanced development considerations highlight how checkpoint save/restore, protocol analyzer, SW configuration flexibility, ease of use and advanced debug features are markedly improved and combined into a single virtualization methodology platform. Virtual PCIe is the right tool for SDN, accerlerating the move to virtual emulation for customers working in this space. Virtual PCIe enables applications to interact with the emulation DUT just as if it there were real silicon sitting on the bench, making it the ideal methodology for HW/SW co-verification.

Intel's big stake in IPO prospect Cloudera has some strange provisions

#Intel is the biggest stakeholder in #Cloudera ahead of the software developer's IPO, thanks to a $740 million bet the chipmaker placed in 2014. That stake, which valued Cloudera at a whopping $4.1 billion, carries with it some awkward provisions, as laid out in Cloudera's IPO prospectus on Friday. In the filing, Intel is listed as owning 22 percent of the company before the offering. Far from just a financial interest, Intel has been developing and marketing products with Cloudera to bring more big data capabilities to Intel's data center processors.

EMC Storage Driving Dell Revenues

#DellTechnologies, the computer hardware and storage giant, reported brisk fourth-quarter hardware sales fueled by its acquisition of storage leader #EMC. For its full fiscal year, however, the company reported a sizeable operating loss tied to the EMC deal. The holding company (NYSE: DVMT) that owns #Dell and EMC along with majority ownership of #VMware, also claimed leadership in global server shipments along with the fiercely competitive all-flash storage array market. Meanwhile, it also reported strong demand for its hyper-converged infrastructure offerings. Dell Technologies reported Thursday (March 30) that quarterly sales ending on Feb. 3 jumped 58 percent to $20.1 billion, reflecting the integration of EMC's storage products. Overall, the EMC storage unit drove earnings, with storage revenue accounting for $4.8 billion in quarterly revenue. Elsewhere, VMware's (NYSE: VMW) fourth quarter revenues totaled $1.9 billion, with operating income of $565 million, the parent company said. Quarterly bookings for its NSX virtual networking stack reached a run rate of about $1 billion, with more than 2,400 #NSX customers. Quarterly revenues from server and networking sales rose 12 percent year-on-year to $3.6 billion, lead by sales of its PowerEdge server that "outgrew the market," the company claimed. Meanwhile, its cloud server business declined during the fourth quarter, a loss attributed to expected fluctuations in customer orders from one quarter to the next. The company also claimed record quarterly demand of all-flash arrays with demand exceeding $4 billion in the last quarter. "We believe we are nearly the size of the three next competitors combined as we continue to capture the market shift to all-flash," David Goulden, president of Dell Technologies' Infrastructure Solutions Group, asserted during a conference call with analysts. The Dell unit has "taken some of our traditionally hybrid products and actually enhanced the architecture quite substantially to take further advantage of all-flash [arrays] and therefore produce all-flash version," Goulden added. The company also said it expects to introduce flash storage combined with Non-Volatile Memory Express technology later this year. In the near term, the company sees soft demand at the high-end of the storage market while demand from medium-sized enterprises continues to grow. The bright spot appears to be all-flash storage in datacenters, where Goulden said Dell's market share is higher than for external storage. "There's a lot of work going on to look at IT transformation and future architectures," he added, and potential customers are still weighing their options "in terms of what their IT transformation strategy is…." Among Dell Technologies' other business units, #Pivotal Cloud Foundry's annual bookings jumped 130 percent to more than $270 million. The platform allows developers to deploy cloud-native applications on public or private clouds. Since closing the $60 billion acquisition of EMC Corp. last September, Dell Technologies said it has paid down about $7 billion in debt associated with the acquisition while repurchasing $824 million in stock.
