Eyeing a turnover of over USD 3 billion in India, IT infrastructure provider #DellEMC plans to invest USD 1 billion to set up its product development centre in Pune. "Dell EMC as a company has announced recently another USD 1 billion of capex investment in this country for setting up a development centre in Pune and also expanding our local manufacturing here. Our sales turnover is going to be over USD 3 billion in next two years," Dell EMC Director for Mega Projects, Ravinder Pal Singh said at an Assocham event. Dell EMC already has a manufacturing unit at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. He said that the company last month shipped 10 millionth product from its Sriperumbudur factory. Singh, however, expressed concern over the current structure of government policies and bids process for public procurement. He said that security is a growing need for India as also the world over as so many terrorist incidents have taken place. "But, when we look at GST rates, security devices have been put at 28 per cent. Ultimately, if you look at security, lots need to be done from government policy perspective," Singh said. He said the government needs to look at domestic electronic market size and the demand that is being met from imports. "Push for start-up to be able to compete is a great step to enable local manufacturing and innovation," Singh said. He said that the government's policy need to extend benefits to original equipment makers in India like Dell EMC to boost local manufacturing ecosystem. "Most of OEMs, despite having local manufacturing, doesn't benefit from it," Singh said. Singh said that in lots of government projects, the lowest bidder is given business which is resulting in deterioration in quality of products that which is being used in some large projects

CoreOS CEO: Amazon Web Services customers heading down a “very proprietary” path
#AmazonWebServices achieved critical and commercial success by changing the way companies procure infrastructure for their critical applications, but #CoreOS CEO Alex Polvi thinks a backlash is coming. CoreOS provides a managed- #Kubernetes product called #Tectonic for companies that don’t have the interest or skills in managing their own Kubernetes container-orchestration deployment. Ahead of CoreOS Fest Wednesday, where the company is expected to show off new features for Tectonic, #Polvi took stock of the cloud infrastructure computing world in 2017 — dominated by #AWS — and predicted that things are about to change.

Two weeks ago, I attended #DellEMC s annual premier conference, Dell EMC World, held in Las Vegas. I did a detailed write-up on many of the bigger technology and product topics coming out of the event, which you can read here. I also attended many of Dell’s channel events and got a lot of one on one time with Dell EMC’s senior channel executive, including channel President John Byrne, alliances SVP Jay Snyder, channel marketing SVP Cheryl Cook, and distribution SVP Jim DeFoe. Based on those conversations and announcements, I wanted to spend some time talking about two elements of its new partner programs and services that I didn’t think were externally discussed as much as they could have been. Some background, first.
Study Provides Insights Into Software-Defined Storage
#DataCore Software just published the results of its sixth annual "State of #SoftwareDefinedStorage, #Hyperconverged and #CloudStorage" survey. The survey was designed to assess the impact of "software-driven" storage deployments within organizations across the globe. The survey asked respondents about levels of spending on technologies including software-defined storage (SDS), flash technology, hyperconverged storage, private cloud storage and #OpenStack, with software-defined storage topping the charts in 2017 spending. Major Business Drivers of SDS The respondents indicated that major business drivers for implementing SDS include: To simplify management of different models of storage – 55 percent To future-proof infrastructure – 53 percent To avoid hardware lock-in from storage manufacturers – 52 percent To extend the life of existing storage assets – 47 percent Only 6 percent of those surveyed said they were not considering a move to SDS. Although surveys of this type often do not ask about project failures and disappointment, the respondents were asked "What technology disappointments or false starts have you encountered in your storage infrastructure?" The top three answers: Cloud storage failed to reduce costs – 31 percent Managing object storage is difficult – 29 percent Flash failed to accelerate applications – 16 percent Dan's Take: Software Defined Storage Is Increasingly Important Although I usually don't comment on surveys done by other research firms, this one appears to offer solid information and the analysis provides useful insight. The findings of the survey are consistent with the results of smaller-scale work done by my company and are worth knowing about. I found what enterprises are seeking through the use of this technology to be rather interesting.

Magnetoelectric Memory Cell Enhances Energy Efficiency for Data Storage
Washington, DC (Scicasts) - Today's computers provide storage of tremendous quantities of information with extremely large data densities, but writing and retrieving this information expends a lot of energy. More than 99 percent of the consumed power of information storage and processing is wasted in the form of heat, a big headache that still has not abated. A team of researchers from France and Russia has now developed a magnetoelectric random access memory ( #MELRAM ) cell that has the potential to increase power efficiency, and thereby decrease heat waste, by orders of magnitude for read operations at room temperature. The research could aid production of devices such as instant-on laptops, close-to-zero-consumption flash drives, and data storage centers that require much less air conditioning. The research team reported their findings this week in Applied Physics Letters, by AIP Publishing. Billions of transistors can now be etched onto single chips in a space the size of a dime, but at some point, increasing this number for even better performance using the same space will not be possible. The sheer density of these nanoscopic transistors translates into more unwanted heat along with quantum-level interactions that must now be addressed. Over the last several years, research has ramped up to explore the magnetic properties of electrons in a phenomenon called the magnetoelectric effect. This effect, often of interest in the field of research known as spintronics, takes advantage of an electron's spin, instead of its charge. Spins can potentially be manipulated at smaller size scales using far less energy. Most efforts have focused on reducing the energy of the write operations in magnetic memories, since these operations typically use more energy than read operations. In 2010, the same French and Russian team showed that a combination of magnetoelastic and piezoelectric materials in a magnetoelectric memory cell could allow a 100-fold reduction of the energy needed for the writing process. In the researchers' latest paper, they show that the same magnetoelectric principle also can be used for read operations with extra-low energy consumption. "We focused on read operations in this paper because the potential for the writing energy to be very low in magnetoelectric systems means that the energy output will now be higher for read operations," said Nicolas Tiercelin, co-author of the paper and a research scientist from the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) who is conducting research at the Institute of Electronics, Microelectronics and Nanotechnology in Lille, France.

Vendor-customer relationships are changing and Dell EMC is at the forefront, exec says
The technology giant is still in its first year post-merger, but #DellTechnologies has continued to promote its advancements in the enterprise and its roadmap for maintaining and growing its market share. Though the merger made waves in the technology community as a whole, the enterprise market was particularly impacted because of the disruption to the vendor landscape. Powerhouses in the industry such as #VMware and #RSA suddenly fell under one corporate giant. Now, one customer can receive a full suite of diverse services to match its technology roadmap, in essence creating a one-stop shop for business technology. But Dell’s move is the opposite of what other vendors have done. Dell EMC wants to offer customers as many services as it can, making it easier to implement modern technologies. Other vendors, such as #HPE, split its business, divesting some assets to focus on certain technologies, including its move to get out of the IT services and the software business. HPE's focus on agility is the reason for becoming more streamlined, allowing it to create services more tailored to the customer. But for Dell, that is the opposite of where the market is going. As companies look to transform, Riley’s perspective is that customers want end-to-end support rather than pure specialization. It’s too early to know how Dell EMC’s move will pay off, as the new company is still going through growing pains. In FY17, the company reported a $3.3 billion operating loss, though it’s too early in the Dell EMC marriage to spell doom for the tech giant

CloudGenix CEO Blasts Cisco's Viptela SD-WAN Acquisition, Talks 'Game Day' Channel Engagement
#Cisco s acquisition of #Viptela won't boost the networking giant's position in the fast growing #softwaredefinedWAN market, according to Kumar Ramachandran, founder and CEO of #SDWAN startup $CloudGenix. "The Cisco acquisition of Viptela does two things simultaneously. One is, it gives great clarity to the market. And two, it confuses the heck out of Cisco customers," said Ramachandran, in an interview with CRN. "Clearly Cisco [Intelligent] WAN is a failure, that's why they bought Viptela." Ramachandran also talks to CRN about the vendor's Game Day channel initiative that pits CloudGenix's reps working alongside partners to close deals with new customers. "The partner walks out of the room literally with anywhere between 10 to 20 new deals in hand," he said.

HPE, LinkedIn, GE Confident Open Data Centres And Edge Solutions Are The Future
Nearly every quarter a new foundation or organisation is launched by industry heavy-weights trying to drive the debate and innovation within the data centre community. Now was time for #Flex, #GEDigital, #HPE, #LinkedIn and #VaporIO to come together and launch what they have named as the #Open19 Foundation. Other supporting members of the foundation include #Delta, #Inspur, #Groupware and #Molex. The foundation has been set up with the principle of building “a community for a new generation of #opendatacentres and #edgesolutions” by creating project-based open hardware and software solutions for the data centre industry. One of the initial hardware contributions to the foundation will be the Open19 Platform industry specification that defines a cross-industry common server form factor, creating a data centre and edge solution for operators of all sizes. The concept for Open19 came out of a search for a solution that would not only fit any location and facility footprint, but also optimise for any size data centres to a degree that was previously only practical for very large data centres. The solution was to develop a new model for building data centres using racks, cages and pre-defined network and power—enabling both traditional data centres and emerging business models like bare-metal cloud services. Yuval Bachar, Principal Engineer, Global Infrastructure Architecture and Strategy at LinkedIn, has been nominated as the president of the Open19 Foundation. He said: “The Open19 Platform represents a simple solution for a complex problem, so it is no surprise that the response from the community has been so strong. “With the formation of the foundation, and the addition of our new partners, we can now begin capitalising on this interest from the community and building on the vision for the Open19 open platform.” Darren Haas, Head of Predix Cloud Engineering, GE Digital, said: ” GE sees a need to establish a set of standards and customisable, flexible and economical data centre designs, which will ultimately help our industrial customers capitalize on the latest advances in computing.”
