The SAP/ #Apple announcement took all the headlines, but SAP SAPPHIRE NOW featured many other announcements affecting everything from SAP hosting to data visualization. While it's understandable that those flashy announcements will get the most attention, the implications of the new partnerships for big data might prove to be the most important revelation. #VMware Partnership Makes #HANA #BigData Easier and More Flexible The #VMware / SAP announcement didn't attract a lot of buzz, but it's big news to SAP customers. The release of VMware #vSphere 6.0 supports up to 4TB of data, with 128 vCPUs in a virtualized HANA environment. This makes HANA big data easier to implement and run, cuts costs and increases flexibility. Companies can execute live migrations on truly massive SAP HANA landscapes without downtime, and use off-the-shelf tools like the Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) to control workloads. Additionally, this should allay fears among organizations worried that their data is going to outgrow their HANA landscapes. Dell Offerings Help Lay the Groundwork for HANA Big Data in IoT The Dell/SAP announcements were underreported, but will have major implications for HANA Big Data - particularly in regards to the Internet of Things (IoT). Dell released a range of new products, including Dell Automation and Cloud for SAP, which will make it easier for Dell users to setup and run virtualized VMware environments across best-fit hybrid or private cloud hardware - certainly, something that has implications for big data HANA landscapes. But more importantly, Dell announced a new IoT architecture based on Dell Edge Gateway - Dell's embedded computing technology. Dell's ruggedized hardware has been integrated into a framework that uses SAP HANA analytics, and supports Cloudera Hadoop. Hadoop is able to work with massive datasets on commodity hardware, and is often employed as part of an SAP HANA big data landscape. SAP HANA can analyze hot data in realtime, while Hadoop supports data storage and analysis economically. This provides a powerful tool that can work with structured, unstructured and sensor data to provide actionable insights. SAP Builds Industry-Specific Collaborations to Utilize HANA Big Data One of the most important aspects of the Dell announcement is SAP Foundations for Health (in partnership with Intel). The platform can analyze medical records, biometric data and case notes, along with other medical data for a wide range of medical and life sciences goals, including improved patient diagnosis and treatment, drug development and genomic research. SAP has also brought in medical industry partners, developers and other organizations to advance the platform as a tool for medical innovation. This is just one of a growing list of industry-specific platforms and IoT collaborations developed in a broad partner ecosystem, using SAP HANA big data analytics as the backend. SAP HANA has Built a Solution - its Partners are Providing the Problems SAP HANA represented a major jump over traditional RDBMSs. However, while companies could quickly benefit from its performance and small footprint, learning to make full use of its powerful analytics is a more complex task. SAP has built some great analytics in its own right, but the company is increasingly depending on partners to make HANA big data an indispensable strategic tool for enterprises.
