From a hardware perspective, VMware vSAN supports most modern server compute and memory features. Network functionality requires a server with a minimum 1 Gigabit Ethernet network interface card, though a 10 GbE NIC is preferable. At the storage level, the server requires either a Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, a Serial Attached SCSI host bus adapter or a RAID controllerwith a minimum of one flash disk for caching -- or storage when the server contributes storage capacity to the vSAN. When it configures servers into a cluster, VMware vSAN 6.6 works with at least two hosts but can support a cluster size of up to 64 host servers.
