EMC, HPE lead flat enterprise storage market

IDC says spending on all flash deployments continues to increase. International Data Corporation’s (IDC) latest storage tracker has revealed that the enterprise storage market was flat in the 12 months since the second quarter of 2015 with #HPE having a statistical tie with #EMC at the top position. Despite the flat growth, total worldwide enterprise storage systems factory revenue stood at $8.8bn during the second quarter of 2016. Total capacity shipments increased 12.9% year over year to 34.7 exabytes during the quarter. With 18.1% market share in Q2, EMC lost -5.5 per cent points of revenue share in the year, while HPE gained 8.8 per cent points with 17.6% share. #IBM and #NetApp accounted for 6.8% and 6.7% of worldwide spending respectively. Looking at external storage systems alone, IDC’s numbers reveal that EMC led the market with a 28.2% share. HPE and NetApp came close for second place with 10.6% and 10.5% shares respectively. IBM remained at fourth place with 9.5% share and #Hitachi and #Dell tied for fifth place with 7.4% and 7% shares. IDC notes that the total all flash array market generated nearly $1.1bn in revenue during the quarter, up 94.5% year over year. The research firm did not reveal supplier numbers. The hybrid flash array segment of the market continues to be a significant part of the overall market with $2.3bn in revenue and 26.1% market share. IDC Storage Systems research manager Liz Conner said: "After a slow start to the year, the enterprise storage system market remained steady during the second quarter. "Spending on all flash deployments continues to grow and help drive the market. The decreasing cost of flash media, coupled with increasing use cases, high density deployments, and availability of flash-based storage products, have resulted in rapid adoption throughout the market."
