Details Of Dell Technologies Channel Program, Leadership May Emerge In The Coming Week

Partners will have to wait a few more days for details about the leadership of #DellTechnologies ’ channel operation, even though approval for the company’s more than $65 billion acquisition of #EMC has been received from Chinese authorities, and a closing date of Sept. 7 has been set. John Byrne, channel chief of the combined company, is likely to unveil the leadership of his channel team sometime in the coming week, according to sources close the process. Gregg Ambulos, EMC’s global channel chief, has indicated he will remain with the combined company, and sources have told CRN that several top #Dell and EMC channel executives will have positions in the Dell Technologies channel operation. Byrne told CRN in June that the Dell and EMC channel programs would run side by side until Feb. 1, the start of Dell’s fiscal year. In that time, he’ll be working to make the transition as seamless as possible.

“We're going to bring two phenomenal companies together with a portfolio that, frankly, is unsurpassed in the marketplace. We want our channel partners to work with us and take those products to the market aggressively. My commitment is they're going to be profitable,” Byrne told CRN in June.

“We've acquired the best people on the planet, the best team on the planet, the best products on the planet and, ultimately, the best programs and incentives on the planet,” he said.

Dan Serpico, CEO of FusionStorm, a San Francisco-based solution provider that works with both Dell and EMC, said it’s important for Byrne and the entire Dell Technologies channel team to seek input from partners, and so far, they have.

“My only hope is that they take the best aspects of each program,” Serpico said. “The rebates and MDF at Dell is terrific and really important. It helps us drive significant demand gen. The EMC hard deck and incredible support around the channel has been something we’ve been able to leverage. Those are things we hope to build out and adopt. They’ve done a very good job of reaching out to lots of partners to try to get feedback, both Dell and EMC. They’re smart guys and you’d expect that they would use that information to drive the best channel program they can," he said.

"We’ve got to wait and see at this point. I expect they’ve made their decisions, but we’ll wait and see. What else can you do? All you can ask for at this stage is that they listen, and they certainly have. You’ve got to put your faith in the leadership,” said Serpico.

Dell said Tuesday that it had received anti-trust approval from China’s Ministry of Commerce, and then set the closing date for the landmark acquisition. The deal was originally announced last October.

EMC shareholders will receive $24.05 and 0.111 share of a Dell Technologies tracking stock tied to the performance of VMware, which is 80 percent owned by EMC, for every EMC share they own. The value of the merger fluctuates with VMware’s share price, which at about $73 a share Wednesday afternoon, puts the value of the transaction at about $65 billion.
