A group of leading tech companies has urged Congress to hand over the “keys” of the Internet to the international community. #Facebook, #Google and #Twitter all signed the strongly-worded letter, according to a new report from Reuters.
The Internet was born in the United States, and so far the US Commerce Department has controlled it. But a plan, years in the making, is in the works to transfer control of the global Internet from US hands to an non-profit called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers Congress (ICANN). While #ICANN is based in Los Angeles, Calif., the move would still place the Internet under international control.
So far, Republican leaders have staunchly opposed the plan, arguing that it could give China undue influence over the global Internet. “The proposal will significantly increase the power of foreign governments over the Internet, expand ICANN’s historical core mission by creating a gateway to content regulation, and embolden ICANN’s leadership to act without any real accountability,” Senator Ted Cruz wrote to the Department of Commerce and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration
