As #Intel ’s #KabyLake processor rolls out in the coming months, it comes with a big asterisk.
How big of an asterisk? If you’re running #Windows7 or #Windows8 /8.1, you should not buy a new PC with Intel’s 7th Generation Core Kaby Lake processors — or any processor generations that follow. Hat tip to PC World, which pointed this out on Tuesday.
Don’t get a new Windows PC if you plan to run Windows 7/8/8.1: That’s the basic message from Microsoft. “Future silicon platforms including Intel’s upcoming 7th Gen Intel Core (Kaby Lake) processor family and AMD’s 7th generation processors (e.g. Bristol Ridge) will only be supported on Windows 10,” Microsoft told me in a statement. “And all future silicon releases will require the latest release of Windows 10,” Microsoft added.
This was first communicated in January of this year in a blog entitled, “Windows 10 Embracing Silicon Innovation.”
“Going forward, as new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support,” Terry Myerson, Microsoft executive vice president, said at that time.
Per that Microsoft policy, Intel is not planning to update drivers for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 for Kaby Lake, an Intel spokesman told me over the phone.
Intel claims Kaby Lake delivers up to 12 percent faster productivity (aka, work-related applications) and up to 19 percent faster web performance over the previous-generation processor (Skylake) as well as a boost in performance when processing 4K video content. Battery life for laptops should also improve.
