Dell holds top spot in enterprise storage market

#DellTechnologies held the top spot in the total worldwide enterprise storage systems market in the third quarter of this year, accounting for 25.5% of spending with $2.25bn revenue. IDC said that total worldwide enterprise storage systems factory revenue dropped 3.2% year over year to $8.8bn in Q3, compared to $9.12bn for the same period in 2015. The research company’s worldwide quarterly enterprise storage systems tracker revealed that total capacity shipments increased 33.2% year over year to 44.3 exabytes during the quarter. Revenue within the group of original design manufacturers (ODMs) that sell directly to hyperscale datacentres increased 5.7% year over year to $1.3bn. Server-based storage sales were relatively flat, accounting for $2.1bn in revenue. IDC said external storage systems was the largest market segment, but the $5.4bn in sales represented a 6.1 % drop year over year. #HPE stood at second place in the global enterprise storage systems market with a 15.5% share of revenue during the quarter. #1NetApp, #IBM, and #Hitachi finished in a statistical tie for the third position, accounting for 6.6%, 5.9% and 5.7% of global spending, respectively. As a single group, storage systems sales by ODMs accounted for 15% of worldwide spending during Q3. IDC storage systems research manager Liz Conner said: “The enterprise storage market closed out the third quarter on a slight downturn, while continuing to adhere to familiar trends. “Spending on traditional external arrays resumed its decline and spending on all-flash deployments continued to see good growth and helped to drive the overall market. Meanwhile the very nature of the hyperscale business leads to heavy fluctuations within the market segment, posting solid growth in 3Q16.” Dell Technologies was the largest external enterprise storage systems supplier during the quarter, accounting for 31.6% of revenues. NetApp and HPE finished in a statistical tie for the second place with 10.9% and 10.2% of market share, respectively. Hitachi and IBM remained in a statistical tie for the fourth position with revenue shares of 9.1% and 8.6%, respectively. The total all flash array market generated more than $1.1bn in revenue during the quarter, up 61% year over year. The hybrid flash array segment of the market posted $2.1bn in revenue with 24.1% market share.
